Subject: Observations for today's soccer game

I made the trip to Fairfield to watch the match. There was a decent student turnout and there was a strong Marist following which caught me by surprise.

Fairfield had many opportunites in the first half to score but could not cash in. All game long, Fairfield was not sharp.

I believe, if Fairfield has scored in the first half, we would have won. Marist scored in the second half and Fairfield was completely stunned. The next 10 minutes Fairfield was still shocked and a Marist player hit the crossbar and the player headed the rebound into the goal.

After the second goal, it seemed that Fairfield finally woke up as evidenced by the late goal that they scored but it was too little too late.

Fairfield didn't play its best game. It was a major disappointment because loosing on your turf sucks espicially a championship game.

I hope I am wrong, but I do not think Fairfield will get an at large bid to the dance.

TOT was at the game but I did not get a chance to speak to him.

I was there as well and your observations are accurate. We were not sharp. Allowing a Marist forward to receive the ball behind our defense was a costly mistake and the resulting score was the turning point.

Antman, could not agree more with your thoughts. I have to say I was impressed with the turnout, but Fairfield did not live up to the expectations of being a 20th ranked team.

Hate to say it, but their winning streak was too much for them and they really took a breather, or "choked" as some might say, in the most important game of the season.

This was just not the same Fairfield team that I have watched this season.

Fairfield (14-4-3), must hope that its 12-game unbeaten streak and big wins over North Carolina State and Fairleigh Dickinson will be enough for one of 25 at-large bids when the 48-team field is announced today at 4 p.m.

Like I predicted. Too bad our season is over.

The Elon loss killed us. We can't lose a Championship game on our turf. Nobody to blame except us.

Last season, Providence finished with a 0-16 record.

Providence making the NCAA Tournament over Fairfield is just plain WRONG!!! Providence finished 6th out of 8 teams in the Blue Division of the Big East and lost in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament. Plus Providence was only ranked #9 in New England versus Fairfield being ranked #20 in the nation and #2 in New England. I wasn't upset when the Stags didn't make the tournament, but, hearing that Providence made the tournament over the Stags just pisses me off. This is completely unfair and shows the major conference bias of the NCAA. Somebody should make a stink about this...

If you want to voice your anger, here is a link to the BigSoccer MB thread discussing "Who Got Screwed?" I already left a message. Let's flood this thread with complaints and let people how Stags fans feel!!!

The whole idea that a team with 9 ties and only 6 wins gets to play for the national championship is just not right. And I thought that you had to win more thatn 50% of your games..... 6-3-9 does not compute.

From BigSoccer MB...

Brown has one single solitary win vs a winning team that being a 2-0 victoy over powerhouse {sarcasm intended} Pennsylvania. Brown played 2 teams who made the tourney those being fellow Ivy schools Yale a 2-1 Loss and Dartmouth a 2-2 Tie. So Brown has a tie vs Dartmouth and a loss vs Yale and they get an @ Large Berth?? Whoop-de-fricken-do!! Outrageous! No wait! Scandalous!!

from the St. Louis Post -- where SLU is PO'ed they did not get in at 9-5-5, while a team like SMU, who they crushed got in... the thing i find interesting is Providence was 0-3-7 against Tournament teams

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> Lessons Learned!!! -- Stagophile, 09:27:36pm 11/15/05 Tue, [1]

Lessons learned...

1.) Stags are screwed on SOS because we are a member of the MAAC.
2.) To compensate for the MAAC hit on SOS, we need schedule the toughest possible non-conference schedule.
3.) Limit or get rid of Ivy, NEC, Patriot and Southern opponents.
4.) Add as many ACC, Big East and Big Ten opponents.

What a terribly biased system, but, this is what the NCAA created! The risk of losing the MAAC Championship is too great. As a result, our SOS has to be as strong as possible in order to maximize our chances for getting an at-large bid.

So here are the final rankings of the D1 Conferences. Continuing with the rationale from me previous post, I believe we need to focus on scheduling teams from the Top 5 Conferences only. I am surprised to see the West Coast Conference ranked so high, but, I think this is great opportunity for the Stags. The top 3 teams in the WCC (i.e., San Francisco, Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount) are fellow Jesuit institutions. There is no reason why we could utilize our Jesuit ties to schedule at least one game per year with one of these WCC schools. The Ivy League was stronger than I thought, but, I think one game per year should be the max.

Rank Conf
1 ACC
2 Pacific 10
3 Big Ten
4 West Coast
5 Big East

-----------------------------

6 Conference USA
7 Big West
8 Ivy League
9 Missouri Valley
10 Mtn Pacific
11 Colonial
12 Mid-American
13 Horizon League
14 America East
15 Southern
16 Patriot League
17 Atlantic 10
18 Northeast
19 Mid-Continent
20 Big South
21 Atlantic Sun
22 Metro Atlantic
23 Atlantic Soccer

Isn't it obvious that the NCAA has no respect for the MAAC. The only way to enhance our position is to remove ourselves from this league. Otherwise we will experience this frustration every year. And I do know that this is easier said than done. A possible alternative is to put yourself in a position where you could contend for a national championship and that may mean it is necessary to move to Div 2 or 3. At least the opportunities would be more available there. I am simply tired of having to go through this nonsense with the NCAA so frequently.

22nd out of 23 conferences. maybe soccer should learn a thing or two from lacrosse and make a move for greener pastures. Having the MAAC so low hurts not only us but any other team that may find themselves in the same position.

The leaugue for soccer is pretty good imo. FU, Loyola, Marist, Rider, and St Peter's usually field good squads.

But going into the championship game, the MAAC only had one team with more wins than losses. According to the site listed below, the MAAC was ranked next to last among all D-1 conferences. The Ivies were actually ranked 8th.

This is a good example of how, though the MAAC might have one very good team, the conference as a whole is not very good and thus will not get any breaks when it comes to getting bids.

You didn't burst my bubble. Your link is the same source of rankings that I provided in my above "Lessons Learned!!!" post. The reality is that we are not leaving the MAAC anytime soon. Therefore, in order to avoid a repeat of this year, our non-conference schedule should the most difficult possible. So if we do find ourselves losing the MAAC Championship again, we will be in a much better position of making the case for an at-large bid. NC State was our only top major conference opponent. The likes of BC, UConn, Georgetown, Seton Hall, Rutgers, Maryland, Penn St, Santa Clara, San Francisco and Loyola Marymount should be on our schedule every year. Just like we are doing in basketball and lacrosse, we need to start taking bold chances in soccer. We definitely have the talent!!!

As long as Fairfield remains a midmajor it will continue to get screwed. Each year teams with almost as many losses as wins make the NCAA Tourney in BBall. Sometimes I wonder how the people who make these decisions can sleep at night. The problem is that these characters are of the athletic community where differentiating between right and wrong is a lost art. What is really frustrating is that Fairfield was a top twenty team and had won twelve of its last thirteen games, yet this had no impact on those making the decisions. Sad!!
