Season preview: Fairfield women place trust in Murphy

FAIRFIELD — When considering the possible successors to Janelle McManus as the Fairfield starting point guard this season, Cara Murphy hardly seemed like the logical choice a few months ago.

Cara Murphy at PG, who would have thought that. Coach Nolan sees something there. Its an unusual move, as Murphy is not the quickest or most athletic player.

But Murphy can shoot, and if she can provide good decision making along with composure, this could work...... plus give us some desparately needed outside shooting. I never have seen Murphy dribble that much, so that seems to be the biggest risk, even though she was a PG in HS.

I relate this move to Men's hoops. Murphy is like MVS being our PG and this freeing up Sabra Wrice to be a "Terrance Todd" type player, and not have to worry about running the team.

And I like Baendu Lowenthall starting at center as a Frosh. The line-up as I read it:

PG: Cara Murphy
2G: Sabra Wrice
SF: Stephanie Ryan
PF: Candice Lindsay
CC: Baendu Lowenthall

I am more than shocked. Can't see Murphy playing the point at all. Would much rather see her coming off the bench as a type of "instant offense" contributor.
Have a feeling Meka Werts will still end up with more minutes than Murphy.
Like the rest of the line-up, especially Lowenthal rather than Podrug. Quicker lineup, and the interior defense can't be any worse than what we witnessed the last two years.
