No I'll change that and say is it because of American influence.

I would rather say it is the influence of capitalism, industrialization and postmodernism. America is America because it is the land of nearly unrestricted capitalism. The more a country accepts the model of capitalism, the more it becomes like America. I can see it here in Germany. Of course, America is "leading the way" here.
