I have an enduring fondness for American classics, particularly writers from the American South. Kate Chopin is one of my saints, so I recently re-read The Awakening. I was in college at the time that Chopin was "re-discovered." She was quite a character. Carson McCullers is another of my saints; I read The Ballad of the Sad Cafe and her collected short stories once or twice each year.

Speaking of short stories, I highly recommend Robert Olen Butler's "Had a Good Time." Butler has long collected early 20th century postcards, and these stories are constructed from the messages on these cards. Gimmicky, I know, but great stories! You may recall that Butler once won a Pulitzer for his short story collection "A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain," and I recommend that one, too. Its stories are built around the Vietnamese community in the Louisiana bayou country.

I'm planning to read the Popul Vuh soon, what with all the interest in Mayan prophecy as the 2012 date approaches. There's a well-regarded translation that just came out recently. Should be a challenge!
