Subject: Glass Thermometers

Since some youngsters at any given age are unsuitable for an oral temperature with glass thermometers, are rectal temperatures the exclusive alternative? Date Posted: 11:09:14 07/23/09 Thu I don't think any doctors in USA still use glass thermometers and the few that do take rectal temps on kids or babies most likely use a digital probe. I was kid in 50's and 60's and teen in the 70's my doctor always took rectal temps with a glass thermometer and did so at every visit until age 13. This was very common in years past but now many doctors don't take temps at all unless someone is sick then they seem to like to use the ear toy or and oral probe. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]

After moving to a town in the mid south, I had a small puncture wound in my foot and went to the only doctor there for treatment and maybe an tetanus shot. The doctor was older than the hills and had a male assistant that took care of the office business and took vital signs in a room off the waiting room. When I went into the room to have my vital signs taken, I was surprised to see two clear glass containters with glass thermometers inside. One was marked oral and the other rectal. It also became clear to me why there was an examination table in the room. There were only flimsy curtains separating the room from the waiting room, which were used sparingly.
