 Saw a female friend of mine getting her RT taken when she was seen by her family doctor. She was 15 at the time. I guess her parents must have thought in normal, as they led me into the room where she was getting her temperature taken when I stopped by to see if she'd being coming out that day to hang out. This was in the early 60s. Docs still made housecalls and teens still got their temperatures taken rectally.
