An excerpt from a 1996 review of the Soviet experience in Afghanisrtan -- Achilles, Thu, Dec 31 2009, 11:51:33 [1]
"The inability of the Soviet military to win the war decisively condemned it to suffer a slow bloodletting, in a process that exposed the very weaknesses of the military as well as the Soviet political structure and society. The employment of a draft army with full periodic rotation of troops back to the Soviet Union permitted the travails and frustrations of war and the self doubts of the common soldier to be shared by the entire Soviet population.
The problems so apparent in the wartime army soon became a microcosm for the latent problems afflicting Soviet society in general. The messages of doubt were military, political, ethnic, and social. In the end they were corrosive and destructive. One needs only review the recently released casualty figures to underscore the pervasiveness of the problem. Soviet dead and missing in Afghanistan amounted to almost 15,000 troops, a modest percent of the 642,000 Soviets who served during the ten-year war. Far more telling were the 469,685 other casualties, fully 73 percent of the overall force, who were wounded or incapacitated by serious illness. Some 415,932 troops fell victim to disease, of which 115,308 suffered from infectious hepatitis and 31,080 from typhoid fever. Beyond the sheer magnitude of these numbers is what these figures say about Soviet military hygiene and the conditions surrounding troop life. These numbers are unheard of in modern armies and modern medicine and their social impact among the returnees and the Soviet population was staggering."

Our all-volunteer force serving multiple deployments reduces "the amount of travails and frustrations of war and the self doubts of the common soldier to be shared by the entire (American) population." Perhaps Bush's advisers read "The Soviet War in Afghanistan: History and Harbinger of Future War? General (Ret) Mohammad Yahya Nawroz, Army of Afghanistan and Lester W. Grau Foreign Military Studies Office, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas June 1996."

Also contributing to the American public's disconnection from both wars is the diversion from reality our much different culture and economy provides.

A while back, Senator Tom Coburn (Redneck, Oklahoma) wanted his fellow Bible thumpers to pray that "some" Democratic Senator (i.e., 92-years-old Byrd---wink, wink) be "unable" to appear for a crucial health care vote.

Coburn was a co-sponsor of Senator DeMint's ironically named "Semper FI" bill along with Saxby Chambliss (who names a child "Saxby"?), Cornyn, Vitter and Inhofe (whose 2 years in the Army says he was a draftee). All are southerners, citizens once noted for being extremely gung ho. It seems that Vietnam's realities had a way of stifling volunteerism.

Coburn is also a member of the C Street cabal of theocratic totalitarians known as The Family* along with Inhofe who recently and proudly asserted that his own family has had not a single homosexual member. The likely presence of a few morons was not addressed.

As for Limbaugh, the cigars, oxycontin and peripatetic temperament do not contribute to a favorable prognosis.

* "La Familia" is Italian for "The Family" but in Italy refers colloquially to the Mafia.

Very much doubt it. That would have entailed more training than would have been of value to the Army in the short time he'd be able to use it. I remember his saying something about Airbourne school...That's a short enough school that it's possible he actually did go. But jumping out of perfectly good airplanes never did impress me. All of my tactical work entailed getting the plane on the ground before bailing out, and then setting up comm. for intial forces to come in...including a jeep with an air traffic controller to talk the rest of the planes down for a "bare base" set up. The unit was literally "first in-last out".

That information also indicates that Gene was only in for two years....a "cannon-fodder", infantryman with the only training being basic, and AIT. That would have put him in from ages 18-20. Two year fodder was generally never given any advanced training since it would be wasted on someone who would only be able to use it for maybe a year or so before leaving. That's why the Air Force mandates a four year term of service in order to get their money's worth out of their people. There are also some AFSC's that are hard or impossible to transfer out of. Mine was one of those comm specialties. In fact, during the last two wars my specialty was "stop-lossed" for about 6 months after the end of both gulf wars.

Plus he's not old enough to get his Medicare and Socialist Security check yet so I place him at being in the Army (if he ever really served) in the late 60's. Since it's apparent he never went to 'Nam, that would mean he's just another Vietnam era vet like me. I imagine I saw more "action" than he did in his two years as a draftee.
As for his justification for getting out, The Army back then was not known for it's country club atmosphere.

Sheriff Dan of Geauga County, Ohio is on the side of Christian Patriots. He addressed martial law within his jurisdiction. The fed needs to come through him, and according to him, it won't happen in his county.
He would hope everyone in the county would apply for a conceal carry permit. Whether you choose to carry is your choice. We did make our concerns known about the government knowing who took the classes, and carrying.
He is in full support of citizen militia groups forming. He only asked to meet with the leadership. Our plan is to make small groups of 5-6 able to respond quickly. Those close the the area of concern would be first responders. We are developing the capability to communicate and mobilize quickly, armed or unarmed as needed. Our sheriff understands the times we are living in and acknowledges we don't have much of a government anymore.

Evidently our current President has had ONE beneficial effect on the country. The FBI reports that there was a 10% drop in murders during the first six months of 2009. This drop follows an almost 25% increase in weapons purchase "instant checks" in the same time period compared to 2008.
The 10% drop is the largest since such statistics were first compiled in 1960.
The vast majority of gun sales during 2009 have been of the type which the fascists want to see removed from the hands of the citizenry....semi-auto rifles, pistols, etc. And ammo sales have similarly soared, especially .223, 7.62 x 39, 9mm, etc...all types that the gun grabbers would like to see banned.

What has been extremely fascinating this morning is the comments (here) over the news (Apparent heart attack) of the mouth of the EIB.
I understand now where you people get your batshit crazy ideas. The (apparent) heart attack of defacto leader of the disaffected republicunt party
One of the news reports said the 1st words out of his mouth was he was taking drugs for back pain. Which would lead one to suspect that he wasn�t having a heart attack but was hospitalized for another drug overdose that destroyed his hearing the 1st time out.
So what say gang, lets sit back and see how this one plays out.

After I made the comment to Murray about Limbaugh being a nice chap, I wrote the second message and started looking for an animated fireworks image to post. I looked for a while, and did some other stuff around the office, and finally settled on the photo that I posted.
So when I hit post, I didn't know that you had posted the fake Limbaugh death notice.
It looked pretty good there, but if I had believed he was dead, I wouldn't have posted the fireworks. That really isn't my style. It is in fun when he's alive, but kind of tacky if he was really dead.
If I had thought he was dead, I would have noted that if Americans can't have the satisfaction of hearing that bin Laden has died, Limbaugh makes a fair substitute until that day arrives.

There is tremendous fear rising on both the right and the left that the announced intention of Congress -- to force every American to pay tribute to private corporations, with no government alternative -- sets a dangerous and frightening precedent with implications far outside the scope of health care.
If the health care bill written by the Senate is passed, middle-class Americans will be mandated to pay almost as much to private insurance companies as they do to the federal government in taxes for insurance they can't afford, with the IRS acting as a collection agency for penalties of 2% of their annual income if they refuse to comply.
Keith Olbermann has said he will go to jail before doing so.
But this left-right alliance against corporatism isn't new. Many recent measures have been bringing liberal progressives and conservative libertarians together to join forces in opposition.
This "right-left wraparound" is happening because politicians in both parties have become so unresponsive to popular sentiment, and the political drama that plays out in the media little more than kabuki theater for the benefit of the voters. The public support for stifling investigation of the bank bailouts just to protect the President are infinitesimally small, and fortunately Dennis Kucinich announced today that he would commence an investigation into the Fannie/Freddie bailout. But it's a testament to the extreme nature of what is happening to our government that such traditional political foes could find common cause in opposing it.

The consortium foresees producing up to 1.8 million barrels a day at the field, which Lukoil has estimated contains total recoverable reserves of 12.9 billion barrels. Statoil said Tuesday that it had renegotiated the terms of the deal to give it a somewhat larger stake than was originally foreseen. An integrated data base for threats should have been expected, we now learn that it does not exist. This must be fixed.
It should be reasonable for the flying public to have expected that when the Nigerian terrorist's father reported he was going to a terrorist training camp he should automatically have been barred from getting a visa and from flying into the United States.
We Need a "Grand National Strategy" That is Bigger Than the Debate Over Afghanistan
The emergence of Yemen as the new planning, equipping, and training center for terrorism should remind us we need a worldwide "grand national strategy" (to use the World War II term) that is far bigger than our current debate over Afghanistan.
Americans should also note that ABC News is reporting that two of the plotters to blow the Amsterdam to Detroit flight out of the air were released from Guantanamo in 2007, attended an "art rehabilitation program" in Saudi Arabia, were released and took up senior leadership positions in al Qaeda in Yemen. Americans should also know that nearly half of the remaining detainees in Guantanamo are from Yemen.
The recent arrest of five Americans in Pakistan and the report there are 25 British citizens training to be bombers in Yemen should remind us this is a global war.
Moreover, the report that 74 Guantanamo detainees who have been released are back in the war trying to kill Americans should stop any further effort to close Guantanamo or to release terrorists.
The New Honesty Should End Any Thought of a Civilian Trial in New York for KSM
This new honesty about the threat should end any thought of a civilian trial in New York for 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammad with its dangers for exposing American intelligence information. All terrorists including would-be bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab should be tried in military tribunals as part of a serious war strategy.
The Attorney General and every Justice Department appointee whose law firms provided pro bono counsel for terrorists should be fired and replaced with lawyers who believe the lives of Americans are more important than the rights of terrorists.
The United States must have a policy of effective interrogation to understand our enemies and disrupt their planned attacks ( read Marc Thiessen's column from yesterday ).

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano's claim that the Detroit bomber was allowed to board a plan with explosives hidden in his underwear proved the system worked is proof we need a new Homeland Security Secretary who knows we need a new strategy and a new focus.

Now that our attention is focused on airline security measures thanks to the failed airline attack on Christmas Day, it's worth mentioning that one senator took money away from aviation security to line the pockets of a constituency that supported his presidential campaign in a big way.
Back in July, Senator Chris Dodd, D-Conn., proposed an amendment reducing aviation security appropriations by $4.5 million in favor of firefighter grants -- a notoriously inneffective program. In fact, the money was specifically "for screening operations and the amount for explosives detection systems." The amendment was also sponsored by Sen. Lieberman, D-Conn., and Sen. Carper, D-Del., but Dodd deserves to be singled out here because the firefighters union is a pet constituency of his. In 2007 he campaigned all through Iowa with the firefighters union. It was one of the few distinguishable features of Dodd's ill-fated presidential bid.
The text of the amendment is below:
(Purpose: To provide additional funds for FIRE grants under section 33 of the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974)
On page 77, between lines 16 and 17, insert the following:
SEC. X (a) The amount appropriated under the heading "firefighter assistance grants'' under the heading "Federal Emergency Management Agency'' under by title III for necessary expenses for programs authorized by the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974 is increased by $10,000,000 for necessary expenses to carry out the programs authorized under section 33 of that Act (15 U.S.C. 2229).
(b) The total amount of appropriations under the heading "Aviation Security'' under the heading "Transportation Security Administration'' under title II, the amount for screening operations and the amount for explosives detection systems under the first proviso under that heading, and the amount for the purchase and installation of explosives detection systems under the second proviso under that heading are reduced by $4,500,000.

The guy supposedly spent the junior and senior year of his undergraduate career there and no other student enrolled during that period can be found who remembers him. Obama has permitted no records/transcripts of any kind from his years there to be released - as is also the case with his transcripts from Occidental and Harvard Law. He does not appear in the yearbook for the year he supposedly graduated.
Have any of you attended a school full time for two years about whom all of these things can be said? Why does Obama make no effort to provide information that would put this matter to rest? What is the deal with his transcripts anyway? There must be something in them that is not in keeping with his carefully crafted public image.

There doesn't seem to be one on record nor is there any verifiable record of the two people ever having co-habitated anywhere in Hawaii or any of the other 57 states.

Soetoro's half sister, who was born in INDONESIA also has one of these certificates of live birth which was generated for her after her return to the U.S. but it doesn't provide any proof of citizenship. Please provide a verified copy of the President's LONG FORM birth certificate and we can clear this up immediately.
