NOTE: Good article bec there is plenty of information
that is fan friendly and digestable. Check out where
the article came from and who was the writer. Notice
how articles from Manila Bulletin aren't always as
dependable with the articles they put out. Mostly
come out as a standard showbiz press release that
most probably was made within Backroom, Inc. The
article below really seems to be an article that
got made because the writer was present at that
product endorsement launch and was able to do a
quick honest-to-goodness interview with Regine.

IF MY CASE HELPS THE GOVERNMENT’S campaign to chase after tax
evaders, I don’t mind this,” said singer Regine Velasquez of her
ongoing problem with the Bureau of Internal Revenue. “I’m aware that
there are people out there who are remiss in their responsibilities.
We should all do our share. Our country need this campaign.”

Regine was referring to the BIR’s “Run After Tax Evaders” program
(RATE), which seeks out tax-delinquent celebrities. The program is
also aimed at discouraging the public from following the examples of
such tax evaders. This is why stars like Regine, Richard Gomez and
Judy Ann Santos have so far been the biggest “catches” of RATE.

Talking to a group of entertainment writers in a gathering to launch
her as endorser of Wow Magic Sing (karaoke mics), Regine
added: “It’s just that going through it is really hard. I don’t know
anything about taxes. I just know how to perform.”

Even so, the singer takes “full responsibility” for her troubles. “I
should have checked and rechecked the documents. This could have
been prevented.”

The BIR filed tax evasion charges before the Department of Justice
last year against Regine for her alleged failure to declare P3.75
million in income as product endorser of Nestlé Philippines Inc. in
2003.

“I hire people to do these things,” Regine said during Thursday’s
gathering. “My staff—and I—must have failed to produce the necessary
papers.”

The DOJ recently dismissed the case. But Finance Undersecretary
Gaudencio Mendoza Jr. said the BIR and Department of Finance were
preparing a motion for reconsideration to be filed against Regine.

“That’s going to be another problem,” the singer said. “This serves
as a reminder for me to pay more attention to details.”

She was touring the United States with Pops Fernandez when the BIR
filed the charges. “When I got back here, it was already a big
issue. I couldn’t eat. I cried almost everyday. Nalagas ang buhok ko
(my hair fell). I kept thinking: ‘I could go to jail. Paano ’yun?
Kawawa naman ako (poor me),” said Regine.

Despite all that, Regine said, she never once thought of living
abroad.

“I never thought of migrating—not even to Venice—my favorite city
ever,” she stressed. “Whenever I go away, I almost always get
homesick on the fourth day. I miss Pinoy food—kanin, patis (rice,
fish sauce). No matter how hard life is here, it’s still the best
place for me.”

Do you sing your own songs on your karaoke?
No. It’s not that I’ve grown tired of them. It’s just nice to sing
somebody else’s songs sometimes, like Ella Mae’s (Sayson) “’Til My
Heartache Ends,” or songs by Mariah Carrey and Whitney Houston. I
also like singing songs that don’t require me to shout much.

How will you spend your birthday (yesterday, April 22)? Do you have
a birthday wish?
The same thing I wished for last year—happiness for my whole family,
and peace of mind. On my birthday, I’ll go to an exclusive resort
with my best friend. The following day, my family and I will fly to
Boracay. For the first time in 20 years, I will go on a vacation.

Finding a special someone is not on your wish list?
That’s for me to know and for you to find out (laughs). It’s better
for me right now not to talk about my love life. I know that many
want to hear me talk about it, but I want to keep it private. Once I
say something, it’s like inviting everyone into the relationship.

It’s been two years since your last film (Mars Ravelo’s “Captain
Barbell”), any new movie coming up?
My next project is a co-production between Viva Films and Star
Cinema. It will be with Piolo Pascual. It has not been finalized.
I’ve been waiting for this for over a year and half. We’re having
problems with our work schedules.

Do you have plans of renewing your exclusive talent contract with
Viva Entertainment?
Right now, I want to do projects with other companies. I want to go
freelance. But because I have a very good relationship with Viva, I
prioritize their projects.

This is also considered a press work for her endorsement
but the writers individually had the opportunity to
interview the artist at the launching of the product.
You normally don't see it happen this well. Usually
the artist don't say anything and the publicist just
tells each writer what to say or passing out something
so they'll have something interesting to say along with
the new product information. -mmJun :-/

Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez says that the Bureau of Internal
Revenue (BIR) may be raising public awareness about tax obligations
by going after celebrities but at the cost of lowering the morale of
actors and singers.

"Can’t you feel it? The industry is in an even bigger slump since
last year when this issue came to fore with those affected choosing
to do more shows abroad or going into depression just like I did,"
says Regine.

The Songbird, who openly spoke of the issue for the first time, says
that she had literally cried everyday when the BIR came after her.

"I would be on the phone talking to friends about other things when I
would suddenly break down, crying. Nalugas ang buhok ko kaka-isip
kung makukulong nga ako or hindi—a very scary thought—even when I
knew in my heart that I wasn’t guilty," says she.

What Regine admits to is "not being keen on details" when it comes to
finances; a lesson she definitely has learned from the experience.

"Sa totoo lang kasi, what do I know about taxes? Nothing. All I know
is to sing and perform. Meantime, I have people who take care of the
financial aspect of my livelihood. I’m not saying these people are
not doing the job, pero pano nga kung may nakalimutang resibo? And to
think that when the issue broke out, I was not even in the
Philippines but abroad on a tour. From this time on, I will always
double check on my finances para di na ito maulit."

Regine is willing to become "an example" for others, though, if it
means helping the government collect money due them. "Aminin natin na
meron ding mga unfair people who really would do everything para
makalusot sa pagbayad ng taxes. If being the ‘sacrifical lamb’ means
instilling fear in these people to spurn them to do the right thing,
then so be it. I know the government needs all the help they can get
dahil nga lubog tayo sa utang."

When asked if she ever contemplated on living permanently abroad
where living a more peaceful life seems likely, Regine turns even
more serious.

"Inisip ko na din yan although it’s something I will never do. Even
when I’m in my favorite places like Paris and Venice, four days pa
lang ako duon ay na-hohomesick na ako. How could I even imagine
living there when their food is no match to ours? At saka dito, may
patis! (laughs)."

She adds: "Besides, ang Pilipino, marunong i-enjoy ang buhay kasi
we’ve learned how to become resilient. Basta’t andyan yung network of
family and friends niya to support him, any Filipino will get by. If
some people think that life, say, in the U.S., is better, why do you
think six out of ten Americans go to psychiatrists? O bakit ang taas
ng suicidal rate duon? Things are not always what they seem."

This love for her country and her people’s laidback lifestyle is what
convinced Regine to become the endorser of’WOW! Magic Sing that
features 100% scenic Philippine tourism spots and cultural events
like fiestas as backdrop to the lyrics guide that appear onscreen.

"Even though I already sing for a living, I still enjoy ‘karaoke
nights’ with friends. Yun nga lang, I don’t sing my songs during
these occasions kasi nakakasawa na. Ang madalas kong kantahin ay mga
piyesa nila Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Ella Mae Saison’s.
Minsan din I choose songs na walang birit. Pahinga naman," she ends.

WOW! Magic Sing comes in three models namely Mabuhay (premium model),
Silver Fiesta (with Othello game for added entertainment) and Papuri
(for Christian gatherings).
