"Body Talk with Regine Velasquez"

Phil. Star, Nov. 26, 2004

Body Talk with Regine Velasquez
by Ricardo F. Lo

Reigning Still.

That’s the title of Regine Velasquez’s concert at the Araneta Coliseum on
Dec. 3 and 4, with Ariel Rivera, Sarah Geronimo, Rachel Ann Go, Sheryn
Regis, Kyla, the SM Chorale, FrancisM, Andrew E., The Tux and Hotlegs as
guest performers. Produced by Aria Productions in cooperation with GMA
Kapuso, with Regine’s brother-in-law Raul Mitra (husband of Regine’s sister
- Cacai) as musical director, the concert is presented by Smart, Progress
Gold and Cape Lupe. (For ticket inquiries, call the SM Ticketnet at 911-5555.)

"We’ll have spectacular visual effects, I assure you," said Regine. "The
audience can see and feel the four seasons of the year – winter, spring,
summer and fall."

Reigning Still is an apt title not only for the concert but for Regine as
well. Today, she reigns supreme in her field, unchallenged on her turf,
unequalled by her peers. She’s the standard by which other performers, some
old/veterans and others new and merely aspiring, measure themselves. And
yet, despite her status and stature, Regine is not above supporting
upcoming singers on their shows.

"I’ve also been a beginner once," she said, "and I’m grateful to the
established singers who agreed to appear as ‘guests’ on my show. It’s my
turn to return the favor to beginners."

The good thing about Regine is that, besides her humility, she’s now able
to laugh at herself, unlike before when she was uptight with the press and
came off as "defensive" and therefore highly-vulnerable.

For instance, when the name of Ariel Rivera is mentioned (he is, together
with Richard Gomez, also co-starring with Regine in the GMA soap Forever in
My Heart), movie writers sometimes take a reluctant pause, prompting Regine
to break the ice and say, "Yes, my ‘ex’."

She hasn’t had any serious relationship since her heartbreaking romance
with Ariel (now the husband of Gelli de Belen) and that, said Regine, is
one thing she’s worried about especially now that she’s into her early 30s
(she’s a Taurean, born on April 22).

Meanwhile, during a break in the rehearsals for Reigning Still, Regine
agreed to "body talk."

What sort of diet do you follow?

"Now? I’m really trying to lose weight, so all I eat is fruits. I take only
two meals a day, breakfast and lunch lang. If ever I take dinner, fruits na
lang."

What do you usually take for breakfast?

"Sometimes, rice with ulam. Yung regular breakfast. Or bread. With fruits,
ang dali mong mabusog so your intake is limited."

What’s your favorite fruit?

"Macopa, the Bangkok variety."

What kind of workout do you do?

"I don’t work out. I don’t like exercising because I’m tired all the time,
I work every day. Whenever I have free time, I’d rather rest... sleep."

What vitamins (and/or minerals) do you take?

"Vitamin C, 1,500 mgs. per day."

How much sleep do you get per night?

"At least eight hours. I now get enough sleep because I’ve overcome my
insomnia. Getting enough sleep is good for the voice."

How much liquid do you take every day?

"A lot. I drink a lot of water but I avoid sodas."

Do you avoid cold drinks like most singers? Bad for the voice daw.

"Not really."

What do you do to protect your voice?

"I don’t do anything much. Basta, I avoid drinking cold water right after
singing. Otherwise, okay lang for me to drink cold water. I don’t smoke, I
don’t drink (hard drinks)."

Do you avoid talking before a concert (like, among other singers, Lea
Salonga did especially when she was doing Miss Saigon)?

"Not really. I can’t avoid it. 'Di ko kayang 'di magsalita."

How do you protect your skin?

"I moisturize a lot. I keep my skin clear no matter how tired I am. How? By
washing with soap and water. And moisturizing."

How do you cope with stress?

"I’m not good at coping with stress that’s why I developed migraine.
Recently, however, I haven’t been having any migraine attack." (Once,
Regine almost collapsed while performing at the Music Museum due to
migraine. Somebody caught her in time as soon as she went backstage. – RFL)

How do you pamper yourself?

"How do I pamper myself? I don’t know... Hmmmm, I go shopping. I buy
something na medyo expensive."

What do you usually splurge on?

"Watches. Nice investment ’yan, 'di ba?"

What’s your favorite hideaway?

"Wala akong ganyan, eh. You won’t believe it but I haven’t really
experienced an honest-to-goodness vacation."

Do you meditate?

"No. I don’t know how to do that. But, I pray a lot."

Who’s your favorite saint?

"St. Joseph."

What part of your body is your favorite (aside from your vocal chords)?

"Mayroon ba akong favorite? Hmmmm. I don’t know, actually. I have ugly
legs. Wait, my ass!"

What part of a man’s body do you notice first?

"The eyes. You can tell if a man is mabait just by looking at his eyes."

Is there any part of your body which you think needs some improvement?

"Oo naman – my legs. They’re ugly!"

I disagree.

"They’re not so nice. I need daw to exercise to put them in shape. But, I
don’t ever exercise."

What part of your body is most vulnerable?

"My head. I get headaches when I’m stressed out. And my back. I get stiff
shoulders. I easily get tired along that area of my body. My back and my
shoulders."

Are you vain like most beautiful women?

"Beautiful? Bakit, beautiful ba ako?"

Of course, you are!

"I don’t consider myself beautiful. Anyway, you can say I’m vain somehow.
It takes me forever in the bathroom. I really take my time. I apply oils
and lotions on my body. Mahilig talaga ako sa oils and lotions. But I don’t
see it as being vain but simply taking care of myself."

What’s your clothes preference?

"Okay lang. I do take time choosing what clothes to wear, kasi performer
ako, eh. So I have to make sure that the one I’m going to wear ay hindi ko
pa naisusuot. O kung naisuot ko na, I have to accessorize so people won’t
notice na isinuot ko na ‘yon."

What’s your outlook in life? Are you a pessimist, an optimist or a worrier?

"Ay naku, I’m a worrier."

What do you worry about?

"About everything! Weird, ‘no?"

How’s your love life?

"Ganoon pa rin. Wino-worry ko pa rin."

Do you have a nightlife?

"Hmmmm. No. None!"

Name three men you think have beautiful bodies.

"Marc Nelson whom I often see (on those giant billboards) along EDSA.
Diether Ocampo. Brad Pitt."

And three women...

"Jennifer Lopez. Sana ganoon ang katawan ko, ’no? Britney Spears. She has
nice skin, ’no? Beyonce."

Using body language, how would you make a guy know that you admire or like
him?

"I tell him right away. Joke only. I just steal glances at him. Shy ako, eh!"
