Regine: Unafraid, Unapologetic, Unabashed
by Boy Abunda

Reviewing Regine Velasquez’s fashion choices through the years, one
realizes it is a willful, almost combative approach to style.

She is unafraid, unapologetic and unabashed when it comes to sartorial
matters. Whether donning a cowboy hat on her head, a bindi on her forehead
or a wild orchid in her hair, she seems relentless, intensely adamant about
her fashion choices.

Regine says she admires the same derring-do in other women. In fact, she
looks up to Sarah Jessica Parker and the women of Sex and the City for
their unfettered fashion tastes.

"I prefer women with unconventional fashion sense," Regine owns up. "I
don’t believe that just because you’re in a black dress, you should wear
matching black shoes. What I like about the stars of Sex and the City is
that they don’t subscribe to such rules. They break fashion rules! They’re
daring."

Her other fashion icons are also fashion rebels and innovators. Madonna is
a style goddess in Regine’s book. "She keeps on reinventing herself. Just
like me, she keeps changing. She’s always evolving. She’s always
experimenting. And she’s not afraid. She doesn’t let other people’s
negative opinion of her affect her fashion choices."

Locally, she counts such divas as Pilita Corrales, Kuh Ledesma, and Pops
Fernandez as ultimate fashion plates. "I like Kuh," Regine pipes up. "Even
as early as the ’80s, she was already a style icon. She popularized a lot
of trends. And she was able to carry all of them rather well."

Asia’s Songbird also admires Asia’s Queen of Song for being a pioneer.
"Pilita was among the first singers to make fully-beaded gowns her
trademark," Regine explains. "They were not yet in vogue then, but she was
already wearing them." She is also in awe of the Concert Queen. "Especially
when Pops was just starting," Regine looks back. "Whatever Pops wore looked
good on her."

The common denominator among all these fascinating women, Regine points
out, is that they are fierce, feisty, fiery, fashion independents. "That’s
what I like," she explains, "women who have their own sense of style. They
don’t just follow fads; they set trends. I believe a woman’s style should
reflect her personality, her identity."

Away from the camera, however, glamorous Regine can be quite austere as a
dresser. "At home, I prefer to wear my oldest duster and my bakya," she
guffaws. "Or my rubber slippers."

For Regine, comfort is key. "And I can wear sundresses at home, when I go
out in the mall, even in my bedroom when I’m sleeping," she attests.
"That’s why I always look for sundresses when I am in the States."
Sundresses, shoes, and bags (preferably, Fendi and Gucci) top her shopping
list.

Because of her busy sked (juggling myriad shows all over the country and
two T.V. shows: S.O.P. and Pinoy Pop Idol plus her latest baby, Reigne, her
exclusive line of chic and sophisticated clothes for women) it took Regine
a while – four years to be exact – to stage her biggest concert to date,
Reigning Still, happening tonight and tomorrow night at the Araneta
Coliseum. She will be joined by special guests Francis M., Sarah Geronimo,
Rachelle Ann Go, Sheryn Regis, Kyla, Andrew E., the SM Chorale, the Hotlegs
and Ariel Rivera. "I really want this concert to be my most spectacular
ever that’s why kina-career ko talaga ito!"

To prove this point, Regine was present in each pre-production meeting,
brainstormings, etc. "This concert is the biggest I will be doing so
talagang ibubuhos ko na lahat ng powers ko dito. People who will watch
Reigning Still will get a total musical experience from beginning till end."

Proof positive that the Songbird is reigning still...
