- Bring Back Beefy Bovril website announcement -- Graeme Stickings, 02:05:33 16/04/08 Wed [2]
The current hosts, Beeb.net will cease to be an ISP from 28 June 2008. Whilst the forum is hosted elsewhere the main parts of the site are hosted on Beeb, so I am in the process of migrating this site to another provider, which needs to be free and allow me to ftp files without having to use a dialup.
I am letting you all know in advance incase you have bookmarked this section.
Once I find a new home, the site will be moved and a redirection page put in it's place.
Sorry if this causes a problem, but this has been forced upon me by the closure of Beeb.net

- Why stop the veggie version? -- Richard, 00:03:44 12/04/08 Sat [2]
I turned vegie in 2003 and so stopped eating my beloved Bovril along with other meat products. So was delighted when I heard about the vegie Bovril.
The huge jar in the cupboard is just about empty so I went out looking for a new one, I looked in 6 different stores but found only the beefy version.
To my horror I found this and other sites last night. Why denie the thousands of returning vegie customers? Even if it was special order from a website.... what do they have to loose?

When will it be available in the States? -- Jeff (heartbroken yank), 12:46:08 03/02/07 Sat [4]
I'm a Yank from the States that has been eating Bovril since I can remember. My Grandfather moved here from London after WWII, and brought with him the love of Bovril. It's been kind of an off and on kinda thing as far as availability is concerned, but after the beef ban, it was near impossible to get. I've been able to track down the veggie version, but come on, it tastes NOTHING like the beefy bovril. I'm so used to having a hot mug before going to bed, that now that I can't get it...I can't sleep. I know the beef recipe is back now, but does anyone know when it might be available to purchase online? I NEED IT!!!!

- Beef for Vegetarians? -- John, 09:12:34 01/01/08 Tue [1]
I am British and during WW II we suplemented our meagre diet with Bovril on toast covered with dripping!
I bought a jar of Bovril here in California which, on the front label, said "BEEF". But on the back label it stated "Suitable for Vegetarians". Go figure!
Still tasted OK though, but I think I'll go back to Marmite.

- Bovril is back -- Eddie, 13:16:36 25/08/06 Fri [2]
For the first time in a very long time my wife and I accidently found real "Beef Bovril" in Asda. I was trying to find a press release for it when I found your website and just wanted to let you know. I'v not seen it in Sainsburys or Tesco yet and I can't find any mention anywhere of the beef being put back in. My wife has been overjoyed, we had some of the veggie stuff left and trying the two side by side the original was by far the best and just how we remembered. Now I just hope they keep making it!

I am outraged -- BovrilFan, 07:13:07 20/07/06 Thu [2]
Didn't know about this until today (20th July 06). Totally SICK of everyone bending over backwards to be politically correct, alienating their existing customer base. Why not have a Veggie Bovril and a Beefy Bovril? The new product tastes OK to be honest. But that's not the point. I had been wondering why it wasn't quite the same, especially as you get towards the end of a jar. You just expect some things to go on being the same and Bovril is one of them. It is as if Heinz were to announce they had replaced tomatoes in their ketchup.
Anyway, as there isn't any beef in Bovril now they should have been made to call it "Yeastril" and see what that did for their sales.

- Support from a veggie... -- Jimmy, 07:57:41 19/07/06 Wed [1]
While I am chuffed to bits to be able to have Bovril back in my cupboard (*New* Bovril is still better than Marmite or Vegemite in my opinion) I know that, were I still eating meat, I would be up in arms about this.
I haven't tasted Beefy Bovril for about ten years so I can't really compare the two tastes but I am firmly of the opinion that changing the recipe of any food or drink will ALWAYS make the product worse. Can anyone name ONE product that has been improved by changing? I can't. I've got a similar little mini-crusade of my own going on to get the Czech brewers of Budvar to put their beer back in brown bottles rather than green ones so it doesn't taste off...but I'm up against the marketing people on this one so I've probably got no chance. Still, solidarity eh?
The suggestion that there could be a Veggie Bovril and a Beefy Bovril on the shelves at the same time is a phenomenally sensible idea. No one loses out, you all get the Bovril you know and love but *I* get to enjoy a nice hot mug of the stuff on a cold winter night as well. Everyone's a winner!
Bring back the beef (but keep the Veg)!

- Leaving the country -- Antony Norris, 02:38:40 21/05/06 Sun [1]
I immediately noticed the difference in the bovril last year when I bought a new pot, I thought I'd just got a mouldy pot or someting, it was only after a close examination of the pot I realised I'd been duped, suckered and conned! Bovril indeed! It's an offence!
Well anyway I'm leaving the country in disgust and heading to Australia, lets hope for some beefy Bovril there, otherwise I might have to emigrate to South Africa instead!
One thing I just noticed on Unilevers website, it lists Bovril Stock Drink AND Bovril Original, does this mean original as in ORIGINAL!!!?!!

- BOVRIL CAMPAIGN -- BOVRIL BARMY, 09:28:15 05/02/06 Sun [2]
I found out they stopped doing the beef in bovril the minute my dad brought home a jar from the shop when we ran out. i hate the new bovril and it doesn't deserve to wear the name as the meaning (as has been previously stated) means "beef" and "strength". The subject has really ticked me off as i love bovril to bits, sure i like marmite but it's not the same!
In our unit 2 for graphics (i am 17 and at college) we have to do a campaign about something we feel strongly about and i have chosen to do mine on bovril, "BRING BACK THE BEEFINESS". I was doing my research when i came across this site and i'm glad to hear that there are other people out there who feel the same about the whole fiasco. The vegetarians have their marmite, promite and vegemite so why can't they leave bovril alone? It just seems as if they are being greedy to me, and rightly said, unileiver could do a vegetarian bovril aswell as a bovril original and chicken bovril.
I hope the that with enough effort and support that soon in time unileiver will put the beef back in bovril and i will carry on with my research into the situation.
thanks to Graeme for setting up this site, it has greatly helped me with my work and when my project is finished, if allowed i will post my work supporting the campaign.

Try Beefy Bovril (South Africa) I cannot find it in UK, small parcels arrive from the Cape. It is so good you will be doing the same. A large plastic container bought here recently was thrown away, salty, bitter, yuk. More chemical
foods, get the real stuff, it's worth it.

Bovril and Mad Cow??? -- Texas Guy, 07:19:02 30/12/05 Fri [2]
Don't you suppose the switch from beef-based Bovril was to avoid the possibility of lawsuits related to Mad Cow disease, however remote? After all, a product like that -- albeit delicious -- probably was made from cooking up bones and discarded parts too gross to mention here. The company's statements that the change was made because of consumer preference for the taste of a vegetable-based product just sounds more marketing-friendly. (Think about the coincidence in timing. Wasn't that about the time that Mad Cow became a worldwide news story?)

No Beef? No Wonder -- Tim Sharp, 06:25:15 18/11/05 Fri [1]
I have been eating Bovril sandwiches for lunch and toast for breakfast nearly every day since I was about 4 (i.e. over 45 years!) and recently have noticed it seems to have got saltier and it often leaves a strange taste on my lips - as though it's coated them and you can't get rid of it.
Now I've discovered it's got no beef in anymore, I guess this is the reason.
Anyone else out there know what the actual difference in taste is, because it happened so gradually with me that I was only vaguely aware that it was not as good as it used to be?
I remember when it used to be 100% beef extract and it changed with the seasons. In winter it would be really stiff like butter from the fridge, and in summer runny and thin. It had character!
I'm glad to see at least one other poster here who doesn't drink Bovril but likes it in sandwiches. It saddens me that my 6 year old daughter has gone off Bovril - but that might be because of the no beef :-)
Let's hope the campaign for Bovril Classic is successful!

bovril -- Lynnette Munoz, 11:03:38 31/10/05 Mon [1]
I have e-mailed Unilever re: the removal of BEEF bovril. They claim to have done blind tasting but maybe they tested on marmite users and not the Non-Yeast eaters amongst us. What is the obsession with making/changing products to suit Veggie people? Would thay like it if we put meat in their veggie burgers...to boost sales? I am on my last scraping of Bovril... my whole family is devastated.

- What's in a name? -- Freddy, 13:37:23 11/10/05 Tue [2]
Whatever happened to the significance of a name? Doesn't "Bovril" come from "Bo" meaning "beef" and "vril" meaning "strength"? By that definition the very thought of vegetarian "Bovril" makes no sense! Why loose a unique product to join the ranks of "marmite" and all the other disgusting tasting veggie sludge?

Death of Bovril -- R Sanders, 15:15:09 23/05/05 Mon [1]
It seems we have given up the fight against Uniwhatsit over Bovril. A pity, I am now checking food labels and not buying their products. They have now changed the recipe for bread sauce - giving some half-baked reason based on cosumer surveys(has anyone out there actually be surveyed as a consumer?)
I have a small stock of bovril left, will make it last as long as possible.
When I email shops such as Co-op and Tesco re their Beefy drinks they refer me to Uniwhatsit..........

- Real Bovril -- Robert Sanders, 15:06:20 22/11/04 Mon [5]
After emailing Unilever (what a wonderfully meaningless name) I received a reply much the same as the one on your site.
I have send a reply pointing out that they are removing my choice to eat 'meat derivative' products, and that if vegitarians do not wish to do so then all the have to do is not buy it! - hardly rocket science!
I have purchased some of the real stuff today from Morrisons at Bulwell. Nottingham. It was on the shelf alongside the veggie muck. I hope that this will last until they see sense and reinstate the real thing!
I would encourage readers of this site to bombard Unilever's contact email with messages - you can repeatedly send a message by clicking the back button and then send again!
If this causes them to close the link we should publicise this and let the power of the press put the pressure on.
How about some Bring Back Beefy Bovril teeshirts, car stickers etc?

I now see that Unilever have changed the recipe of Knorr bread sauce.

Following the bad press after discontinuing the production of Bovril do they intend to commit financial suicide?

Protest Marches -- Sticks, 00:23:29 26/01/05 Wed [1]
I had not thought about this one
Such action if it were taken would have to be done in the home town where they make the stuff. You might get some coverage, but then it would be forgotten.
Another tactic used by direct action groups is to buy sufficient shares in the company and make you protest at the share holders meeting.
