Martin’s new album eclipsed by word war

THE NOISE AND HOOPLA created by another round of word war between ex-couple Martin Nievera and Pops Fernandez has conveniently sidelined the beauty and wonder of Martin’s latest recording.

Entitled Awit ng Puso, the album is much more pleasing to the ear than any of those angst-filled interviews combined granted by both Martin and Pops. After nearly two decades, the country needs a rest from all that badmouthing that has now become a landmark in the ex-couple’s relationship. Enough said.

I find Martin’s new EMI album a special treat to lovers of OPM, especially at a time when OPM has been reduced to band songs without rhyme or reason or melody. The 14-track collection offers sheer pleasure as it brings back listeners to landmark songs of the 70s and 80s rendered in that distinct, elegant voice by Mr. Nievera.

Who can’t fall in love with Martin’s versions of such modern Pinoy classics as When I Met You, Kahit Na, May Minamahal, Sana’y Maghintay ang Walang Hanggan, and Kailangan Kita?

Here’s more: Without You, I Think I’m in Love, Love Without Time, Sinasamba Kita, Closer You and I, Kailangan Ko, Kailangan Mo.

These songs were recorded and popularized by such OPM icons as The Apo, Kuh Ledesma, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Hajji Ale-jandro, Nonoy Zu-niga, Richard Tann, Gino Padilla, and Basil Valdez. They had been given a new life by Martin, whose singing has given these songs an even more exquisite touch.

Producer Chito Ilacad says they had been careful in remaining faithful to the songs’ essence even as they had been re-arranged somewhat. ‘We didn’t want to divert completely from the original,’ Ilacad said during a recent meet-up. The result is pure beauty.

Before Awit ng Puso, Martin had released the albums, Best Wishes and When Love is Gone. The first was a collection of wedding songs; the second, of break-up songs. Both turned out to be bestsellers, the same route Awit ng Puso is bound to take given its very strong line-up and carrier, the Apo original, When I Met You.

Martin is back in Las Vegas to be with his girlfriend, Katrina Ojeda, who’s due to give birth in early November. They will call their firstborn Santino, meaning little saint in Italian.
