hello there.

it's been a while since i last posted here and like in my previous posts, i
will have to be very bold and emphatic in saying what i feel even though im
convinced that some members here cannot accept objective observations and
criticisms. and i strongly disagree that these are petty things because
quality and artistry are at stake here. enjoyment is another issue, please.

i watched the 2nd night concert (wise choice if it's true that the first
night featured a fashion show. what? a fashion show?). and i must say that
it's generally below par, not what anyone would or should expect from
someone of regine's calibre and certainly not apt for a concert that
declared her as "reigning still". sure, she was able to prove that she's
still excellent in her number with the 3 young divas. but hey, it was
really kyla who shone in that number, the style, the effort, the different
tones, the highest of notes, and the casual but effective projection, it was
kyla's number. while i still think kyla's voice is not far better than
regine's, kyla's performance style definitely stole the stars from regine.

there were shining moments though, like the opening number, the "in the name
of love" number, the pop rock numbers with francis m, her "kailan" number,
and yes the diva number.

the rain effect could have been put to better use had she sang one of her
english songs in her previous album. overall, she sang like it's just
routine. i miss her singing with all passion, every note and sighs full of
with emotion, etc. the andrew e and ariel numbers were really downers. wala
lang. and the michael jackson medley? who ever thought of including those in
that concert? it's so out of context? it did not have any statement
whatsoever. it's meaningless. i guess that's what i expected from this
concert --- a meaningful statement that is true to the title and will tell
regine's story through a flow of songs that transcends her journey to where
she is now without overdoing some of her more popular songs. i was expecting
her to really reassert her standing in the industry. this concert however
did not convincingly achieve that.

and i cannot be faulted and i will not apologize for expecting too much
regardless of who produced the concert. we consider her the best so i
believe it's ok to expect much. how i wish she'd try the less popular side
now that she's established. she can practically do anything now but she
must also make wise use of that privilege by NOT going with the flow of
singing so-so songs that only serve to elicit laughter or amusement. i
expected her to choose songs that will challenge her artistry in music and
her ability in expressing her deepest thoughts and emotions and those that
will touch people and leave a lasting memory even to those who are used to
listening to her. no wonder, she has never received a standing ovation for
a long long time now.

she had shown how far her voice could go. she could go on and on, but not
necessarily farther. she can try a bit of the blues or pop jazz or the
really eccentric but the more meaningful ones, and still come out a winner.
she has done this a few times already. if she continues to sing the same
pop-flavored songs just because they are her favorite songs or these were
written or sang by friends (listened to the latest album) at the expense of
coherence and meaning, then somebody should tell me to forget dreaming for
regine to finally realize the full potential of her artistry and musicality.
to me these are what define a great artist. don't you wonder why regine, who
is so good, excellent, more than excellent even, and of good character if
that should count, still falls short of being called great? it's because she
got stuck in a particular way of looking at things, or in a so
widely-subscribed musical genre, and in a still "puede na" culture and
mentality.

let me set this straight. im still a fan of regine and will always be. but
i also always be yearning for that day when she really moves to reach that
brightest of stars as i've always believed she's destined to be. she can
really, truly be great if only ....

to all of you who feel a bit uncomfortable about "negative" thoughts and
comments, i suggest that you reconsider. discussion or arguments are ok as
long as you don't lose focus of what these arguments are for.

ciao.
