OPM continues to thrive at Viva Records

Updated 06:06pm (Mla time) Dec 17, 2004
By Remy Umerez Inquirer News Service

FOR 2004, Viva Records continued to support original Filipino music by producing albums for talented new discoveries who may be tomorrow's Regine Velasquez or Sharon Cuneta.

The company's current bestsellers are the albums of Regine Velasquez, Sarah Geronimo and Ogie Alcasid. Regine's "Covers," for example, was released last month and immediately turned platinum (30,000 units sold) after a week.

Gay market

"Regine hasn't done an album in four years. Her latest CD contains cover versions of songs popularized by Filipino male vocalists. It also includes videos of 'Say That You Love Me' and 'Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin.'"

"Regine's fans don't mind spending for their idol's CD basta makumpleto ang kanilang collection [as long as they complete their collection]. Curiously, she also has a considerable gay market that looks up to her as an icon," Vincent del Rosario analyzes.

Sarah Geronimo, a product of a talent search conducted by Viva, became a symbol of hope for aspiring singers. "The record industry constantly needs fresh talents to keep the competition alive. We always welcome a new sound because it's good for business," he adds.

Ogie Alcasid's "I Am a Singer" scored a big hit when it was released recently, which surprised people who consider him only as a comedian and composer. " Masipag kasi siyang mag-promote, [He works hard to promotions] and the masa [masse] can relate to his songs ," Vincent says.

Inferior quality

To address the piracy problem confronting the industry, Del Rosario says that the company continues to remind buyers not to patronize pirated CDs because of their inferior quality. He cites the successful raids the Optical Media Board has been conducting to contain the problem. The campaign against piracy has become global, he says.

To help fight piracy, Viva Records has released CD Lites (that feature three hit songs) sold at low prices.
