Regine Velasquez charters flight to Boracay
for entire clan By JOJO PANALIGAN

As usual its the Manila Bulletin who knows the stories
too much. Question: since you'd think they are directly
connected to a Regine source? How come most of the time
the stories were wrong, false or incorrect? Just thinking
out loud. But it posted with that Mla Bulletin- They have
a good working relationship with publicist Boy Abunda.

Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez will be celebrating her birthday
next week by chartering an airplane en route to Boracay that will
accommodate her entire clan numbering near 30 members.
"This is the first time I’ll be going on vacation during my birthday
so I want my entire family to be there from immediate down to my
nephews and nieces," she says during an interview. "I can’t remember
a time that I wasn’t working on my birthday since I entered showbiz
so this will be something special to me. It’s also a special treat
to my parents who are yet to set foot in Boracay. Can you believe
that?"
Regine says that her family has always offered to throw her a party
on her special day when she’s here in Manila but that she has
refused this each time.
"I’m not very good at entertaining people. When I was younger, my
mom would spring parties for me that I never quite enjoyed because I
would always make excuses to leave my invited guests. Madalas ang
palusot ko, ‘Punta lang po ako ng banyo,’ then aakyat na ako ng
banyo para matulog in periods of thirty minutes," says she.
The vacation, Asia’s Songbird says, is her way of recharging as she
looks forward to an ultra busy 2006 second quarter schedule. Apart
from taking her "Fantaconcierto" concert with Ogie Alcasid, Ai Ai de
las Alas and Rico J Puno to the U.S., she is also posed to finally
start working on two movies one of which will pair her with actor
Piolo Pascual.
Then, of course, there’s the "Pinoy Pop Superstar" (PPS) Grand
Showdown on May 6 at the Araneta Coliseum which the diva has been
hosting for three years now.
"I’m excited to see the outcome of this year’s competition because
of the odd ratio of male contestants out numbering females," says
she. "Though this is no forecast and I’m not being biased, the
statistics point to a male grand champion. Iisa lang ang babae na
napili ng mga judges from Manila kasi yung dalawa pang babae na
finalists are from North America and Canada. Pag nagkataon, this is
another first for me kasi lahat ng nakita kong nanalo in the past----
Sarah Geronimo, Rachelle Ann Go and Jonalyn Viray------are females."
The seven finalists for the 2nd "Pinoy Pop Superstar" presented to
the media at Ratsky Morato a few days ago are Harry Santos (Quezon
City), Gerald Santos (Navotas), Aicelle Santos (Manila), Irra Cenina
(Pasig), Denver Regencia (Davao), Elise Estrada (Canada) and
Rosemarie Tan (U.S.A.). The winner will be determined using scores
earned for text votes, rated performances during nationwide road
shows that took them to Cebu, Baguio, Iloilo and Davao, their
performance on finals night and based on recording in the "Pinoy Pop
Superstar Grand Contenders’ Album."
"The last criterion is important because recording is very different
from performing live," says Regine. "Because cover version of songs
of their choice were recorded, dyan mo makikita ang artistry nila in
making old songs sound new by using their own style and
interpretation."
The album especially produced by renowned songwriter/musical
director Danny Tan is one labor of love. Not all of the contestants’
first picks were selected since GMA Records reportedly had problems
securing rights one of which is "Go The Distance" (a Michael Bolton-
original under license from Walt Disney that’s said to have
commanded a six-digit fee for the song) which finalist Irra wanted
to do.
Songs that eventually landed on the final track list are covers of
Josh Groban’s "To Where You Are;" Vernie Varga’s "Kahit Isang
Saglit;" Whitney Houston’s "All The Man That I Need;" Barbra
Streisand’s "If I Could;" The Bee Gee’s "How Can You Mend A Broken
Heart;" Gladys Knight’s "Neither One Of Us;" Carole King’s "Natural
Woman;" and Leo Valdez’s "Magsimula Ka."
What advice does Regine give to ‘PPS’ finalists?
"To try not to be nervous onstage even when everyone knows it’s a
contest. Nerbyos kasi ang isa sa pinakamalaking deterrent sa singer
para hindi makakanta ng ayos. I tell them to think of it like giving
the last performance of their lives," says she.
When asked how she avoids getting tired of hosting a show that’s
been on air for three years now, Regine waxes nostalgia.
"Since I am a product of singing contests myself, I see in each of
them a part of me. I see the determination to win, the heartbreak of
not winning even when you have given your best and the growing
confidence whenever you pass a round," says Regine.
She ends: "And maybe that’s why GMA thinks I am an effective host of
the show. Kumbaga, been there-done that na ito sa akin. Now I know
it’s my turn to help prepare the ground for the next singing
champion----kasi nga there can only be one Pinoy Pop Superstar!"
Viewers can vote for their favorite contender through text. Just key
in ‘PPS (name of grand contender)’ then sending it to 2364 (Globe,
