Oi! What happened, Oi?
PENPOINT By Ryan Mark
The Freeman 04/22/2006

It is now more than six months since GMA-7 Cebu's Sunday late-
morning show "Oi" made its premiere. It was October last year when
the Cebuano viewers had its first glimpse of "Oi" and its five hosts
then - Marti, Recca, Eguia, Arriane and Yuri. From the looks of its
debut, it seemed that ABS-CBN's "Jud Morning" faced a formidable
competitor - or so many thought.

After its pilot episode, Cebu press raved about "Oi," saying it was
dynamic, interactive, and stylish, leveling to the standards of GMA-
7 Manila's "SOP." In fact, creative people from Manila were sent
here to see to it that everything would be fine in terms of
conceptualizing, editing, and directing. Yet, after the good reviews
and the gargantuan predictions, "Oi" failed to sustain the momentum
and match expectations. In short, the show has become a flop!

It's only now that I'll admit this: from the beginning, I had
doubted the possibility of "Oi" toppling "Jud Morning." But since
I'm very regionalistic - I've always loved and hoped for local
talents to shine - I played deaf and blind to the negative comments
about "Oi." I was deeply hoping that the show would eventually cope
up and outdo its pilot episode. But every Sunday, the show
deteriorates. I think its cause is the concept itself. It's not
clear on what it wants to project or what it wants to achieve. It is
literally a variety show. Like chopsuey, it is jumbled and has no
direction.

Since the start, the concept of "Oi" has never really been made
clear. All that has been said before was that it was going to be an
interactive program. They also said that it would expose their hosts
to tedious challenges including getting dirty and stressed just to
show that though they're pretty and charming, they still can do what
the common tao does. That was supposedly their way of getting closer
to the "masa" viewers. That was why on its pilot episode, Eguia and
special guest, Cebuana rising star Isabel Oli, were brought to the
crowded Carbon market to do shopping. (Well as if it's really that
challenging to shop there. Many market-goers actually, including I,
find joy in haggling over prices.)

In succeeding episodes, there was Marti (who only stayed briefly and
left soon after for the US), who tried his hand on pig-roasting as
he joined the lechon festival in Talisay, then there was Eguia again
in that flop interview with Dennis Trillo and Alfred Vargas. I say
flop because she either had the wrong questions or threw them at the
wrong time. I also got to watch a segment wherein Arianne
interviewed a certain man at the Fuente skywalk who earns a living
by sketching people for a fee. If I'm not mistaken it was a
Christmas special, but I have to say it was boring because it was
obvious that she was just reading questions from a cue card and
relying on the instructions of the segment producer.

The better segment during the Christmas special was the interview
with the oldest firecracker maker in Lapu-Lapu City done by Marti.
He also did a feature on the beauty and risk of sporting a tattoo.
Still, even if I wasn't furnished a copy of that episode's rating,
I'm pretty sure it was way behind "Jud Morning" with its sentimental
gift-giving segments to the children in Bohol, who survived the food
poisoning incident, as well as the feeding of sidewalk dwellers
along Manalili. That touching episode left me crying afterwards.

I also got to see that episode featuring the "Kalapukan Festival"
done somewhere in Minglanilla with gays in skimpy attire having a
scuffle amid knee-deep mud. Instead of being entertained, I was
slighted because members of the third sex were made laughing-stock
again. Okay, given the participants did it at their own will, still
it was a form of exploitation by taking advantage of the dire
financial needs of those gays. It was degrading.

Recently, I caught another segment that showed gays being pelted
with iced water packs - the one who wasn't hit became the winner -
another form of disrespect to the third sex. Why not simply show the
beautiful side of gays - i.e. how they shine and succeed despite the
odds and discrimination against them? Why do gays have to be the
laughing stock if not the punching bag in these segments?

We also recently saw the entry of another segment, "Pop Sensation
Showdown," hosted by world-class performer Rizza Navales. And more
recently, there was a pre-Holy Week presentation with Yuri, Recca
and Amon trying a hand in the drama department through a telesine
entitled "Kinabuhi," a story of two prodigal children and another
one who was a closet gay. I would say they should not have ventured
into it at all because the acting was so dry. I hardly saw promise
in any of them. That they are hosts and not thespians could,
however, be use an excuse. But then, they could have tapped real
local acting talents to star in that telesine. As for the "Pop
Showdown," I admit it's a very good concept. I like it because it
promotes and give exposure to local talents. But is one hour enough?

Last month, I learned that the irritating Eguia and boring Arianne
(but boy was she very captivating parading in an elegant bridal gown
designed by Philip Rodriguez in a fashion show last April 5 at the
Mandaue City heritage garden) were already out as hosts, leaving
behind Rizza, Yuri, Recca and Amon. Now, my question is did these
hosts undergo workshop already, as what was announced before, to
hone their potentials? It was even said that they would be trained
in Manila so that they too would be ready to take on possible
hosting exposures in either "SOP" or showbiz-oriented programs
like "S Files" and "Startalk." Was this a "broken promise" because
they have not improved at all? Their voices are lively but their
expressions are bland. Try watching "Oi" and you will see what I
mean. Which reminds me of a movie director-friend who once told
me "shouting or raising one's voice while hosting does not manifest
liveliness and energy at all. Facial expression and speaking voice
should go together." Therefore, a hosting workshop would be a big
boost for the "Oi" gang!

After all is said, my humble suggestion is that it's about time its
producers should evaluate the show and come to a decision: should
they let go of it and come up with another one or doubly work on its
improvement? Should they choose to start anew, they should get hosts
who have a clearer grasp of the dynamics of local entertainment,
plus are mature to handle interviews, etcetera. Better yet, let the
selection of hosts be a reality-based search so they can develop a
following like in the case of Ethel Booba and Phoemela Baranda
in "Extra Challenge" before. Let the viewers decide on whom they
want to see onscreen. This way we are assured that the viewers
themselves think that the host/s has/have more to offer than good
looks. Because gone are the days where a pretty face is enough
passport to showbiz. Talent now comes first what with the wonders of
cosmetic surgery at our disposal. Still, even if looks have more
bearing, the format of the show should be identified - will it be a
talk show, a game show, a sports-oriented show, a lifestyle show or
a singing contest? It should have an identity.

Let's face it: "Oi" is an expensive experiment that failed. Time to
move on folks, or you will eventually lose your audience.

The Grand Contenders Album
Article posted April 20, 2006

Seven grand contenders. Seven remarkable voices. Seven passionate renditions. Everything that Pinoy Pop Superstar Year 2 has to offer is now captured in the glorious Pinoy Pop Superstar Grand Contenders' Album. From the jam-packed urban districts of Manila and Davao to the grandeur of Canada and California, seven brilliant vocalists emerged to compete in the grand finals night and at the same time provided audiences a preview of greater things to come with the Grand Contenders' Album.

Weaving their own brand of magic, these seven aspirants' debut album will surely enchant you. Opening the musical salvo is seven-week champion and first grand finalist Harry Santos. His version of To Where You Are is a poignant makeover from Josh Groban's. Harry pursues a comparable vocal treatment with the original, sometimes matching Groban note for note.

Second grand contenderand the youngest of them all Gerald Santos delivers on Kahit Isang Saglit, a powerful, emotive track. Gerald's strength has always been vintage ballads, and that is why his take on Kahit Isang Saglit flaunts pure charm with his dramatic voice, enhanced with equally dramatic orchestration.

First female grand contender Aicelle Santos made history when she became the first eight-time weekly champion. This Psychology student goes beyond Freud and Fromm in blowing people's minds. The moment she sings everyone listens. All The Man That I Need oozes with soul and passion, reminding listeners of Aretha Franklin.

The sultry If I Could offers listeners an almost ambient yet sumptuous sample of Irra Cenina's talents. Surrounded by a landscape of soft guitar and piano work, showcases a different vocal quality. Irra's voice is rich in quality but strong enough to shift from genre to genre, a rare attribute among vocalists these days.

Meanwhile, determination seems to be the key to Denver Regencia's success. After failing to qualify in the Manila and Cavite auditions, he showed up at the Davao auditions and this time, he finally booked his ticket to the show and eventually clawed his way to the top. Interestingly, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart follows where Irra's If I Could left off. Denver's apparent maturity in crafting his own personality in this rendition is palpable. The track's luxurious instrumentation is only an ornament compared to Denver's voice that glides like ice.

One of the flagships in this album is Elise Estrada's cover of Natural Woman. Representing Canada this year, Elise's interpretation of Natural Woman is delectable with that breathy albeit potent voice that Carole King would have been proud to hear. She reaches vocal heights in the middle of the song with no signs of faltering.

18-year-old Rosemarie Tan is representing the United States in the competition. She has already performed in the New York musical, The Apollo, which justifies her theatrical voice reaching unbelievably new pinnacles. Neither One Of Us sets Rosemarie apart with a classic, cultured sophistication present in this rendition. Aware of her voice's celestial possibility, Rosemarie rarely overdoes herself although she never holds back when needed, harnessing that voice by the time Neither One Of Us moves forward.

The final track Magsimula Ka features the seven grand contenders bringing out the best in each others' ranges, incorporating a good combination in the song's aim at motivating audiences.

Pinoy Pop Superstar continues to rage on in its second year and this album would definitely foster a better appreciation of the Filipino talent. What's more, Pinoy Pop Superstar is progressing faster and is pushing for discovering truly talented artists. With this release, listeners can expect an exciting showdown as the grand finals approaches on May 6.

'Pinoy Pop Superstar Year 2 - Grand Contenders' album is available nationwide only from GMA Records and exclusively distributed by Ivory Music and Video.

Who do you think will become the next Pinoy Pop Superstar? Vote for your favorite contender for a chance to win P20,000 or VIP Seats to the Grand Showdown!

What a surprise.. a rare official PPS article finally comes out!

G r e e t i n g s ,

Well, you all seen it. I just posted it right
before this one. A new PPS article. An official
one that got posted in the official PPS web site
on GMA-7 site.

Meanwhile those other singing competition shows
have articles coming out left and right. Even
posting in the tabloids. Geez.. Am I the only
one who noticing this?! Because it isn't just
the show that is getting somewhat snobbed and
ignored. Its us too. We the fans. And some of
you intend to give the show a try as well.

Anyone here connected with GMA-7 or knows
someone who is? Anyone want to come forward
and chat about what we can do to get some
attention and the kind of information many
are looking for?

It may be time to make ourselves known
out there to those in charge. We want
some satisfaction! eh? hehe.. This ain't
just a small fan group of the show. This
is also a Regine fans group. ( RV fans
are known for making alot of noise. hehe.)

Anyone on this group want to help out
somehow someway and try to make things
happen for everyone. Get GMA-7 to put
out more articles.. pictures.. what
else?

mmJun >:-)

Tried of this silly unprofessional attitude
I see going on with GMA-7. If you guys are
also bothered then lets go shake a few tree
branches. Probably help the song bird out
some while we're at it too. Otherwise,
the show might not get a 4th season,
people.. if no one cares enough it
won't. I see it coming at the way
things are moving. yeah? >;-(

PPS: Gerald Santos : A step closer to his dream ( finals! )

A step closer to his dream

The seven finalists of Pinoy Pop Superstar were presented to the
members of the press Monday at Ratsky’s Tomas Morato in Quezon City.
The grand final showdown will be held on May 6 at the Araneta
Coliseum where the seven contenders will battle it out and one will
emerge as the Pinoy Pop Superstar.

The seven grand finalists are Harry Santos (Quezon City), Gerald
Santos (Navotas), Aicelle Santos (Manila), Irra Cenina (Pasig City),
Denver Regencia (Davao City), Elise Estrada (Canada) and Rosemarie
Tan (US) who all have the chance to become the newest singing
sensation of GMA-7. The grand champion will get a one-year
management contract from GMA- 7 and recording contract from GMA
Records.

Gerald Santos, the contender from Navotas City, hopes he could
provide a comfortable life to his family. That motivated him to join
the singing contest hosted by Regine Velasquez. He’s turning 16 on
May 15 and it would be an early birthday gift if Gerald emerges as
the newest Pinoy Pop Superstar.

“I really want to win for my family,“ says the teenager whose father
works at the Navotas fish port where his mother is also employed as
a cashier. Would you believe that Gerald has stopped eating fish for
the time being? “It affects the quality of my voice that’s why I had
to stop eating fish for a while. I have to take care of my voice,
especially since the finals of the contest is fast approaching,” he
reveals.

Gerald was only seven years old when he got interested in singing.
The Voltes 5 theme song was the first song he had ever learned and
the one he’d always sing in school. Then he learned to sing songs
popularized by April Boy Regino. He dreams of becoming a
professional singer someday, like his idol Ogie Alcasid. Gerald
knows that to win in Pinoy Pop Superstar would move him a step
closer to his dream. His other favorites are Gary Valenciano, Martin
Nievera, Regine Velasquez, Michael Bolton, and Barry Manilow.

Whatever happens in the grand finals, he is determined to pursue his
dream of becoming a professional singer. He has joined many singing
contests as a young boy, winning some but suffering setbacks as
well. But no matter what happens, Gerald is dead set on chasing his
dream to be a singer.

Big Dome with the “Pinoy Pop Superstar 2 Final Showdown

WE were at the Big Dome when the "Pinoy Pop Superstar 2 Final
Showdown" was held last Saturday night and it was packed with the
fans of the seven contenders. The affair was shown on Sunday night.
The opening was a stunning production number with several dancers in
colorful Muslim costumes and with host Regine Velasquez appearing
from above on a harness while singing "I Believe I Can Fly." With
her were the seven contenders of PPS 1 led by winner Jonalyn Viray
and the seven finalists of PPS 2.

The first round saw the seven newcomers dishing out their favorite
numbers. The two top crowd favorites were Gerald Santos, who
sang "Kahit Isang Saglit" and Aicelle Santos, who sang her favorite
Whitney Houston number, "All the Man That I Need." They would later
win two special awards worth P20,000 each. Aicelle won as Roadshow
Superstar for her winning performances in Cebu, Baguio, Iloilo,
Davao and in Manila, while Gerald won as Viewers' Favorite through
text votes. In the second round, the three Santoses among the
contestants were retained: Aicelle, Gerald and Harry, plus Denver
Regencia of Davao. But in the end, it's the pint-sized 14-year-old
Gerald who won as grand champion.

He got one million pesos in cash, a Futura Classic house and lot
from Filinvest, a brand new Chevrolet Optra, a one-year management
contract with GMA Network, a recording contract with GMA Records,
P300,000 worth of services from Vicky Belo, one-year free beauty
services and P50,000 cash from Ricky Reyes, P100,000 worth of
clothes from Edwin Tan and Pepsi Herrera. The judges were composer
Danny Tan, soul diva Jaya, Director Floy Quintos, and GMA executives
Wilma Galvante and Felipe Yalong.
