Viewfinder : We hope psychologists will be on hand for ’PBB’ teen
edition

THUS FAR, ABS-CBN HAS come up with two editions of “Pinoy Big
Brother.” The first version of the reality show involved then-
unknown “housemates” chosen for their sexy or hunky looks
or “audience-accessible” qualities.

While it succeeded in making celebrities out of some of
its “graduates,” the reality challenge was generally characterized
by tedium, occasionally interrupted by bursts of attention-calling
activity.

The second edition of “PBB” was more successful because it featured
minor celebrities who didn’t have to waste much time establishing
themselves in viewers’ consciousness.

In addition, they were more interesting and colorful individuals who
had a clearer sense of self. Thus their behavior, speech and
relationships were more eventful and view-worthy.

Now, the third “PBB” edition will involve unknowns once again—only
this time they will all be teenagers. What are the new challenge’s
prospects?

On the plus side, there are millions upon millions of teens in the
Philippines, so the new show will be an empathetic viewing
experience for many.

It could tackle issues and provide insights into the aspects related
to teen life, behavior, attitudes and problems that could clear the
air for youths and parents alike.

On the other hand, the teen edition of “PBB” could inordinately
stress relationships, crushes, sensuality, sexuality—so, watch out
for all those raging hormones!

We trust that the show will have youth psychologists on hand to
supervise some of its more “interesting” activities
and “experiments,” so they don’t get out of hand.

If the people behind the show resolutely refuse to let the teen
edition disintegrate into a sniffling, squabbling love soap, it
could become an interesting and instructive viewing experience.

And, if the teen “housemates” come across well in the show, some of
them could become stars in their own right. It’ll all depend on how
savvily they’re chosen, and how creatively and responsibly the new
show is handled.

Let the teen “games” begin!
