Awit Awards clarifies nomination issues ( Regine nominated!)
By JOJO P. PANALIGAN

NOTE: How come Regine's COVERS 2 isn't nominated for the
best selling album as well? Don't ask.. but it should
also have been.. And do I have to tell Regine fans who
was working with the Aliw Awards for so many years that
one of their very own artist won an award that many fans
felt should have been won by Regine? And was this action
a prelude to that person also being involve in the false
BIR tax-evader charges against the song bird? Considering
that it was someone at the Inquirer who told us- The Music
Inside Buzz that somebody at the BIR is related to the
song bird's ex-handler(s). Makes you think? It should..

Despite nominations of revival songs in several of its categories,
Philippine Association of Record Industries (PARI) Executive
Director says that Awit Awards is not encouraging the trend to the
detriment of local songwriters doing new materials.

"The number of revivals that got in this year is negligible," says
Ronald Aniceto. "If you look at the list, 90% are still new songs. I
don’t think these affected the chances of new songs fielded to the
categories much."

He adds: "The presence of revivals is no statement from Awit that
the industry should bank more on these than new songs. No one can
stop artists from doing or labels from putting out new versions of
old songs. Doing so also doesn’t necessarily mean less creativity
particularly when it comes to reinterpretation."

Revival songs gunning for trophies that were written and first sung
by Filipinos are Jed Madela’s "Forever Blue" (originally done by
Cacai Velasquez); Nikki Gil’s "Sakayan Ng Jeep" (Lani Misalucha);
Gary Valenciano’s "Lipad Ng Pangarap" and "Lift Up Your Hands"
(Dessa and Basil Valdez, respectively); Regine Velasquez’s "Shine"
(Ima Castro); Brownman Revival’s "Maling Akala" (The Eraserheads);
Ella May Saison’s "Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin" (Martin Nievera); Kabayao
Family Quintet’s "Nais Ko" (Basil Valdez) and; Renato Lucas & Raul
Sunico’s "Gaano Kadalas Ang Minsan" (Basil Valdez).

Rehashes written and originally performed by foreigners are Maoui
David’s "One Last Cry" (Brian McKnight), Anton Diva’s "We Could Have
It All" (Anne Murray), Jerome Sala’s "One In A Million" (Barry
Gibb), Nina’s "Love Moves In Mysterious Ways" (Julia Fordham) and
Michael Cruz’s "Crazy For You" (Madonna).

Two albums nominated in the Best Selling Album of The Year category
are comprised by 90 to 100% revival songs. These are
MYMP’s "Versions & Beyond" and Nina’s "Nina Live!"

Ronald likewise denies that some of the songs that made it to Best
World/Alternative Music category were not put there merely for
convenience from lack of competition from the genre each fall into.
Among these are Brit-pop-inspired "Pinoy Ako" by Orange & Lemons,
reggae-inspired "Maling Akala" by Brownman Revival and rock-shuffle-
inspired "Akin Ka Na Lang" by Itchyworms.

"We should look at the definition of World Music from the standpoint
of Filipinos," says Ronald. "Anything that’s out of the ordinary we
classified as World Music."

When asked to define Original Pilipino Music (OPM), Jack Madrid,
Managing Director of MTV that partners with PARI this year in
mounting the Awit Awards, acknowledges the question as a tricky one
since most of what local composers and artists come up with
are "derivative."

"The closest definition is this: If it is performed or written by a
Filipino, then that’s OPM," says Jack.

Thus, even works by The Blackeyed Peas, Pussycat Dolls, Sugababe
(that all have members with Filipino roots) and "Amercian Idol"
finalist Jasmine Trias are considered OPM.

"Filipinos becoming recognized as world-class artists, after all, is
the aim of Awit to begin with," says Ronald. "The only reason The
Blackeyed Peas, Sugababe, Pussycat Dolls, etc. aren’t on our list is
because their record companies here did not field them to us during
the screening period."

The total number of entries screened this year was 642. From these
142 made it as finalists in close to 30 categories.

The 19th Awit Awards will be held at Casino Filipino Theater on
Sucat Road in Paranaque City on June 15.

Among the celebrity presenters are Karylle, Parokya Ni Edgar,
Sugarfree, Apryl, Rachelle Ann Go, Rico Robles, Artstrong,
Itchyworms, Kitchie Nadal, Barbie Almalbis and Ely Buendia.
Performing that night are Sandwich, Philippine Youth Symphonic Band,
MYMP, Top Suzara, Jed Madela, Sitti, Bamboo, Urbandub, 6Cyclemind,
Hale, Pupil, Stone Free, Dicta License, Gary Valenciano, Martin
Nievera, Orange & Lemons and The Dawn.

The show will be hosted by MTV Veejays KC Montero, Mark Abaya and
Cindy Kurleto.
