Will another Pinoy make it to ‘American Idol’?

The hit reality show "American Idol" is back for a fifth season with
more talented singers, among them a familiar Filipino face.
Filipino American R&B singer Jose Penala, more popularly known in
California as Sway, might be the next Pinoy reality show star.

Two weeks ago, the 28-year-old Penala became the first American Idol
contestant from San Francisco to earn a ticket to Hollywood, where
the contest’s Final 24 will be chosen in the next few weeks.

Reports have it Penala is among the early favorites to make it to
the finals and even become the fifth American Idol winner.

Penala first burst into the music scene in 1999 with the Bay Area
R&B group, Drop n Harmony.

He eventually went on to form another R&B group called 6th Day.

Last year, the band premiered two music videos at "Lumpia Palooza,"
toured the Philippines and sang alongside Ryan Cayabyab in "World
Musikahan."

Just as 6th Day was making noise with their album, Penala decided to
try it out with American Idol, a move that his group said had upset
them initially.

"I remember we were pretty upset, but this is what he said, I
guarantee you this will benefit all of us," said fellow 6th Day
member Cyrus Mallare.

"We were still working on our project and we slowly started to
realize we have to support this guy, of all people that we know, he
deserves it and he's got a lot of talent," added Drey Silva, also of
6th Day.

Speculations arose that Penala’s past success might come back to
haunt him in American Idol. He is said to be facing possible
disqualification after the contest organizers learned of his
involvement with 6th Day.

"He's being honest about everything, he's not leaving anything under
the carpet, he's letting everything loose," said Mallare, who
admitted that the disqualification rumors had worried him and the
group.

Contest rules state that participants may have professional
experience but they cannot be under contract during the competition.

Both Mallare and Silva agreed that Penala should have no problem
with the rule, saying he had already cut all business ties with
their band and its record label E-Row Records even before the season
started.

Mallare said 6th Day also did not have any official agreement with E-
Row Records until the group returned from the Philippines several
months ago.

"We didn't iron everything out till we got back. By that time, Sway
was already requesting a release from 6th Day and our management, so
it's all good. He didn't breach any contract," said Mallare.

"He's not bound to any of the entities that we're bound to," Silva
added.

Amazing singer

While they are rooting for their friend, Malare and Silva chose to
treat with caution the talk that Penala is an early favorite to win
American Idol.

"Rumors are rumors, I wouldn't be surprised if he was Top 24. He's
just an amazing singer," said Mallare.

"It's all speculation, you're gonna go on the net and see all these
things, you just gotta roll with the punches and I'm sure that Sway
is going through a whirlwind right now hearing all that," said Silva.

American Idol has kept all information on potential finalists
confidential. No matter the outcome, Penala's former band mates said
they only see a positive impact from the experience.

"Regardless of what happens, it's only helping us, it's helping the
community," Mallare said.

American Idol will reveal its top 24 contenders in the next couple
of weeks. Steve Angeles, TFC-Balitang America
