Viewfinder : Juror concerned about young singers’ choice of songs
( Gerald Salonga gives a good music man opinion.. )

of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

ON “LITTLE BIG STAR” LAST FEB. 11, ONE OF the judges, Gerard
Salonga, proved to be more perspicacious than his fellow jurors.
They contented themselves with praising the tilt’s child singers for
their fine voices, but Salonga went further and commented on he
young contestants’ choice of songs.

He observed that the songs were “too old” for the child singers, and
he was right. Some of the songs’ adult lyrics were too mature for
the young performers, and the dissonance was discomfiting.

Later on the same show, Salonga felt it wise to again remind the
young singers (and their parents!): “Mag-ingat sa pagpili ng kanta.”

We don’t know if Salonga’s opinion mattered to the people running
the show, but it should. After all, they chose him as a juror, so
they must heed his wise counsel.

Other off-putting aspects of “Little Big Star” include the young
talents’ overly grown-up look in terms of makeup, clothes, earrings
and accessories.

The young singers also sing in too adult a manner, making their
voices big and growly, and hitting high notes in the
predictable “birit” style associated with “diva-hood” in these parts.

All of these elements distract, and distract from the fact that this
is a kiddie singing contest. Instead of pointing its young talents
in the right direction, the show makes them acquire bad performing
habits and attitudes. This unhealthy trend should stop.

All we need to do is to look at the kiddie division of the “Star
Search” talents search on US television (telecast here on the ETC
channel).

The child talents there are made to sing songs appropriate to their
tender ages, and nobody is compelled to perform like pint-sized
Madonna or Whitney Houston. Why should we be less responsible here?

(P.S.: Pinoy kids have done well on “Star Search.” Many years ago,
Banig Roberto scored major points on the show. Recently, little Mark
Meija figured as one of the program’s three final contenders for the
top prize of $100,000. Unfortunately, he landed only in third place.

But, just a weeks later, another young Fil-Am singer named Maridel
trounced the competition and ended up as the weekly winner.)
