Subject: Reflecting on "Reflections"

Hi guys! Missed this site for quite sometime.

Anyways, just wanna share my thoughts on Regine's "Reflections" last Saturday night, which I've watched along with my bestfriend (actually my birthday gift to him for he too is an avid-Regine fan!).

Must be anticipation in us that we arrived very early, around 6:30pm. The crowd was still very thin then. We decided to have a dinner first and when we came back an hour later, the crowd has grown but still considerably smaller from what I expect (Regine can easily jampacked Araneta for two days!) but knowing this is a concert series, the crowd would be distributed on several days hence the "thin-out" crowd-effect.

Lounging inside very early, I was half-afraid that the venue will not be filled. Closed to 8pm, I was still freakin out. I wanted to see a filled-up venue for this Regine Velasquez we are talking about. 8:30pm and there were still sizable vacancies in some areas. Omigad!!!

But around 9pm, the crowd suddenly poured in lumps- filling up the rows instantly, some 10 minutes before the show. Then the show started.

Over-all the show was magnificently performed and intimate indeed. But there are highs and lows.

The Lows

The opening number showing the "younger regine". I was expecting a kid-for-regine with full confidence yet the one who sung kinda stuttered on a few bars but the kid do have a voice. I was just expecting a more confident representation of a younger Regine. On the contrary, the juvenile or adolescent Regz comes in too strong! She looked like Jodi Santamaria to me. A little bit OA.

The Sharon Cuneta medley, although vocally well executed didn't impress me, probably because I was never a Sharon Cuneta fan to begin with.

The Highs

Regine's Bofill-Easton-Baker medley tribute is superb. She sung Angela Bofill's cuts as if were her own. Regs sang them her own way, not the belter way, but the professional singer that she is and able to justify even songs we don't usually associate with her. As for Easton, it was grand. I have always felt Regine and Sheena have almost the same voice quality, that is why when she sang "Almost Over You" it's as if she was the original singer, only higher and more powerful.

Regine's "Mariah Carey Medley" was for me intended not to be the highlight of the night judging both from the extent of lines she sang and the crowd reaction. It was kinda expectant from the viewers' side- the repertoire almost playing in our mind even before Regz sang the Mariah medley- Never Too Far, Butterfly, etc. But that night, I saw one exceptional rendition of "Butterfly" courtesy of Regine- it was emotionally powerful and vocally superb. I love her when her face reflects the emotion of that song. I knew then, REGINE is in some ways far far better than Mariah.

I don't know with other Reginians but for me the highlight of her numbers is The Whitney Houston Medley- I Have Nothing, Run To You & I Will Always Love You, All The Man That I Need- songbird style. Unlike Lani Misalucha who mimicked Whitney, Regine displayed her vocal power and range. I was awed how she bridged the "refrain/ bridge" part of I Have Nothing and I Will Always Love You- the high part of the songs. My jaw dropped in disbelief! How did she do that? The crowd reaction was thunderous!!!

REGINE on the 19th of November 2005 displayed her vocal power and range that remains unmatched by any other local artists.

Other Highlights

Duet With Jonalyn- Regz here, professional that she is hold her voice back a bit as not to overshadow the neophyte Jonalyn. A Very endearing trait of the Songbird. I also the crowd was holding back on Jonalyn, seemingly testing her vocal power. For me, Joanlyn did exceptionally well. I even prefer her voice quality over Sarah (which lately i hate whenever she took a breather in between notes. Sumisinghal si Sarah on the mic).

Antics With Ai-Ai- Ay susme, my jaw hurted a lot after an seemingly endless laughing spree. Ai-Ai was good although the "freakin did you like this/it" line kinda gone overstretch. But her antic on "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" is the funniest. To display her vocal power of Regine-20 years-into the future, Ai-Ai dropped the mic on the floor and sang with the mic still picking up her voice. The crowd was roaring in laughter.

OVER-ALL : As I've said, "REFLECTIONS" was worth every cent. Watching it, I can say it was one of the most simple concert she maid and yet, the choice of repertoire is exceptional.

SIDELIGHTS: Martin Nievera suddenly dropped-in near the end of the show. Regine and company didn't expected it and when Martin requested for a duet, everybody was at lost. There was no piece available for "Forever". But Raul Mitra managed to recall the notes from his mind and the band pick up on his cue.
