My first time to post here...

i've been a follower for almost 20 yrs and i hope this year regine
makes a significant move that will surpass even her phenomenal
successes the past years, ie. retro (1996) and r2k (2000) years.
commercial and otherwise.

muiscally, 2005 was probably one of regine's not so good years. while
covers managed to reach a decent double (or triple?)platinum status,
i felt the album is one substandard release from the country's
premier vocalist. save for a few outstanding tracks, the rest of the
album contains uninspired remakes, stuff of which karaoke hits are
made.

in the concert scene, there was reflections. a boxoffice success but
to me an uncreative rehashing of some of the highlights from her past
shows.

while she does fot the nth time a great rendition of butterfly and
never too far, it's pretty obvious the fans are already tired of her
singing these songs. i remember a mariah carey medley she did from
the retro concert which was not well applauded. she pulled off the
difficult songs but hardly made a connection. it would have been nice
if she did the songs that made her a big mariah fan (the first
mariah song i remember she sang on a major show was someday (in
season).

i also prefer the first time she did the bodyguard medley, which was
on a show with side a. a showstopping medley which to this day ranks
as one of regine's most difficult medleys. her version in reflections
pales.

her cuneta and ledesma medleys were at best refreshing, at worst
sleep inducing.

i'm not saying it was a bad show. it just wasnt memorable enough. was
she too tired to rehearse new songs? if there was any good that this
show has brought out, it is that once again she has proven a few
things: despite the fact that she didnt have a radio hit, she is
still a major concertdrawer and amidst the countless budding
copycats, her vocal prowess remains unmatched.

but i dont think she still needs to prove that. what we need from her
is an honest to goodnest heartfelt creative output that may not reap
in the kind of success r2k did but is certainly more significant and
more lasting.

after all she is not getting any younger.

And a reply from another regine fan
came as:

i agree! i also felt the same way and observed the same things. i think she has to reinvent again herself to be more exciting and release more original songs. tama na 'yong pagiging revival queen nya. more collaboration with other songwriters and musical directors.

( posts from Asia's Songbird group )

to musikfun:

hello. i think that's some brave post. i did a couple or so
similar assessment of how things are with regine but with
very lukewarm response, and even a few searing remarks.
i seldom get to read about such an honest take on regine's
artistic (or not so artistic) journey. i don't really wanna
sound like i know everything that's good for regine because
i don't. i just felt that at her age, about the same as mine,
she could have established a truly signifcant and distinct mark
in the industry. for one, she does mostly covers these days.
while im not against such remakes, i believe one can do
it only so often.

she should try to passionately look for some fresh and
indigenous materials that will enrich her natural talent.
it's been written about many times that she likes
experimenting and trying out new things but it seems to
apply only in the looks department. she is undoubtedly
a unique talent, a great voice that miracuously has not
withered through the years, and as they say, with
an even greater personality. i wouldn't know for sure
coz i've only 'met' her once (took a pic of her hugging
my daughter). one thing i notice that has been slipping
from her is the passion. it just keeps sliding away. when
i watch her sing, say, the very high 'i believe', i thought
she was just going through the high notes and letting
everyone know she's reached and conquered them.

and her fascination with ogie or his music, or whatever
(no malice intended), is baffling to me. sure, ogie does
the most delightful love songs but regine's gotta move on
to other more artistically challenging genre. im not saying
she should do the same R&B or hip hop stuff as what
beyonce and mariah do because obviously she's just not
into it. but hey, there a lot more to explore. with that
voice and passion of her early days, it is about time she
does true and genuine reinventing.

on the 'marketing' ('hate this word but could not think of any
at this moment) side of her, her production should drum up
a strategy to make her known at least in the region (asia).
im currently based here in indonesia and i learned that a few
here still remember her well. if only she sustained
her 'conquest' of asia then, she would still be the asian
superstar that she was formerly touted to be. it's changed now.
not only are there more good talents here, even our own kyla
and christian bautista are getting really good airplay here.
you'd even find their pirated cds all over.

finally, this next remark could get me into trouble. but i gotta
say what i gotta say. i think regine's become too patronizing.
i mean, she could choose to step out of her circle or box and
savor in what's out there, which i believe is awesome. but
instead she seems to prefer to cuddle or be cuddled
by people whom she likes and are good to her. but there
could be so many equally nice but differently talented,
hip and adventurous songwriters/musicians with a more open
take on life out there, who'd give anything to have their songs
sung by regine. and please, give up those mushy
videos that could only brag about graphics distortion
and slink, glossy looks. can't anyone shoot a more honest
and self-effacing video that puts less focus on her love
of fashion and trying to make her look radiant and
shining. there's a lot of realities in her songs
that could be portrayed in a more appropriately
and honestly crafted video.

oh i said too much. but it's taken a long while so i guess
this is alright. cheers.

petr

PS: i wish people would stop feeding all these 'spying and conspiracy'
stuff (enough of it!!!) as well as debates, polls affirming
regine's best of all. it's time to wake up. she's not staying
forever. meanwhile, the world around her's got something going
for them too. regine does not need these affirmation or
confirmation of her talent. the more people do it the more it
demeans her.

Re: Random Straight Thoughts for 2006

Kyla's music career as fans hoped it would lead to most
probably ended when Backroom,Inc. took over the artist
management of it.

As for conspiracies.. Regine herself said there was
someone trying to make her quit showbiz. Its only logical
to assume whoever that person truly is would be the main
reason many of the wishes of good Regine fans like Petr
and the rest never seem to come to pass.

Those are good posts. I like BRAVE fan posting. But muSICKfun
isn't as brave as you think he is. Because he doesn't sign off
with his name like Petr does. Still his thoughts with the post
is appreciated. ;-} But until people like Boy Agenda's reign
of showbiz media terrorism ends not too many pinoy artists
will ever see the full potentials of their talents. Until
pinoy music fans realize what that truly means to them
it will keep staying that way.

Greetings,

The following post was sent in from a Regine fan
who preferred not to be mentioned :

You have your point, guys. But in fairness to Regine,
maybe, just maybe, she's tired and wants to slow down.
She's been working for her family all her life. And
again, maybe she wants to stay in her comfort zone
after she had gone through. If my memory serves me
right, she said in one of her interviews that she will
no longer produce a solo concert because of the
tedious work behind it; that she wants to enjoy what
she has been accomplishing right now and has more time
to go out with her friends unlike before due to her
hectic schedule.

Yes, she'll get old and will definitely retire, but
still, she will leave a mark as one of greatest
singers (if not the greatest) the Philippines has ever
produced (sana, internationally but she's can't seem
to leave the country and her loved ones here, so she
opted not to push thru with her plans of going
global).

Sayang. She could have achieved more abroad because we
all believe in the talent that she has. If only we
could convince her to do what every fan dreamed of her
- to conquer the international scene - kaya lang..

One thing's for sure though, whatever she's doing, we
are here to support her.

From a Regine fan among us

yourself. popularize new compositions with your superb
interpretation. keep that passion burning. do these now since you're
celebrating your 20th year in the music industry.
