Sound proof:

#1: Kim Flores

Who says winning in singing contests is the only way to stardom for fresh talents?

Kim Flores, Ivory Music and Backroom artist, got her break without slugging it out with hopefuls week after week on primetime TV. It doesn’t mean, though, the opportunity just landed on her lap.

"The first time I submitted my tape to Tito Boy (Abun-da), he turned me down," she admits. "I was too young and I guess he didn’t know what to do with me then."

It wasn’t the first time she experienced rejection. The 15-year-old Kim, who has been singing since age 7, recalls losing in the first singing contest she joined in school.

She also was not able to audition in "Star For A Night,’ too, due to a technicality— Kim was 12 years when she tried so; a year short of the 13 year-old age requirement of the contest.

"When these things happen, I tell myself ‘It’s not the end of my life,’" she says. "It’s easy to face defeat, too, when you’re raised in a family that reminds you to look at the brighter side of things always."

When Kim hit 13, she junked suggestions of joining another television singing contest. Instead, she visited Boy Abunda in one of the tapings of "The Buzz" to pitch her demo tape anew.

"Inabangan ko talaga siya," she says. "And when he saw me, parang di niya ako natandaan kasi medyo nagbago na ako physically. He took my demo tape and said he’d give it another listen. To be honest, I thought that was it; ayaw talaga niya ako and that he was just being nice."

Untrue. The following week, Kim received a call from Boy Abunda requesting a meeting at her house so he could hear her sing live. Kim said that meeting proved to be eye-opener to her as Boy told him all about the advantages and disadvantages of being a public property. Kim did not have second thoughts.

"Even as a kid, I knew that singing is my calling," she explains. "I did not want to get into it to win a house or to be on television. I wanted to sing because of the fulfillment I get from entertaining people. Sacrifices as not drinking cola and setting aside hours for rehearsal come easy to me because of this motivation."

This is the same reason Kim would temper singing in high range. Although she can and is aware that doing birits can get her attention, doing so would just make her "one in millions."

"You might be able to impress people while doing it," she says. "But will they remember you? Will you stand out? Syempre, may nauna na sa yo na gumagawa non so you’d always just be compared to predecessors."

She continues: "Besides, masakit na din sa tenga ang birit ng birit. I’d rather sing mellow tunes with feelings versus just all-out screaming. What’s more important to me is making my own mark."

A key to achieving this is Kim’s ability to sing ala-opera singers. The young singer says that she grew up in an environment that nurtured this style as some family members are into playing classical piano and violin. In fact, one of the first few songs she learned is "Habanera," a Spanish opera number.

"The first time I sang using operatic technique, di ko alam na ginagawa ko na pala yon," she says. "It came naturally to me. Naisip ko na lang to bank on this technique when I heard Charlotte Church doing it. Pwede pala yon kahit sa pop, I thought. But it’s no gimmick but something that just comes out."

This one can hear in Kim’s debut CD under Ivory Music dubbed "Something-At-First-Sight." Although the title track-carrier single is ye ole pop, her remake of Earth, Wind & Fire’s "Fantasy," canvasses the extraordinary in Kim that makes the song shoo-in for follow-up single.

"Something-At-First Sight" also contains "Hihintayin Na Lang Kita," "Journey," "Parang Ikaw Yata," and remakes of "Morning Has Broken" and "Ain’t No Sunshine." The last was her audition piece to Boy the day he visited her at home.

"The title track, meanwhile, was chosen because its message best fits my age," she says. "It’s like, when I saw this guy, was it love at first sight or just infatuation? I think at my age, nothing is really sure because you’re starting to just awaken to such feelings."

Unlike Kim’s sure trek to stardom in 2006 albeit via road less traveled.

hehe.. No, she didn't. All Abunda had to do was get
her to appear in REGINE'S CONCERT. Which is exactly
what would have done. But also because I know how
Regine likes to her other music artists. I don't
think my shameless former showbiz peer thinks like
that except how to take advantage of people. Which
is does alot of with Regine. ( Quote me. )

I haven't heard her yet. But I don't want to hear
what Abunda told her then about what he said was
the advantages and disadvantages of being in
showbiz under him. That should be good reading.

;-)

She said:

mmJun :

Public property, my left foot. It isn't the artists
who are public property, Regine fans.. It should be
what the managers and publicists who are public
property. Because what they do and decide alot of
artists do follow. And it should be publicly known
as to what they do for the artists. Alot of these
stories about our artists are coming not from
them directly anyway. Its their handlers.

Thanks for posting, Scarlet.. Kim is an artist we're
watching closely. Being young and all.. Abunda be on
guard about abusing that one in the media the way he
does with his older artists.
