Special Posting : An Idea of What REAL Beauty is About ..

Physical beauty fades, but intelligence, character, faith,
and good heart— these last forever. That’s real beauty.

Covering for the lifestyle section has just affirmed what
many parents and everyone in their right mind have often said:
Physical beauty fades, but intelligence, character, faith,
and good heart—these last forever. That’s real beauty. But in
the mad scramble to bathe in the fountain of youth, beauty
and personal care companies are unveiling products that
will keep men and women look young.

Asians are scrambling to become fairer. Middle-aged women are
smothering themselves in creams that will delay the onset of
wrinkles. Ponds has its skin whitening creams, liquid washes.
Splash has its Skin White line. Dove has just launched its
Search for Real Beauty campaign. Ponds unveiled the Early
Defense System against aging. There is a gamut of green
and ripe papaya products, even stretch mark removers.

Of course there is an acceptable level of vanity. What
I’m referring to is the exaggerated, and mad need to use
so many tools to stay young looking.

Blame it on the exaggerated premium that the media puts on
youthful beauty. Blame it on the enticing, get-famous and
get-rich quick promises that showbiz offers. Blame it on
advertising, which generates created needs. Whatever.
The truth is, many have succumbed to these created needs
at different levels.

Remember your grandma, who made the best beef tapa in the whole
world? Remember your grandpa who fixed your broken toys with
his steady, able hands? Weren’t they just adorable that we
loved them to pieces? And now, even as our fathers and mothers
reach the age of seniority—with all their wrinkled faces
and hands, white hair, stooped backs, less vibrant gait,
raspy voices, frailer conditions—don’t we just love them
anyhow?

And like the likes of Frisco San Juan and my father, there are
millions of still lucid, physically active and intellectually
dynamic senior citizens. They still live productive lives,
have great ideas, and have retained their sense of humor.
They have wonderful stories to tell and even greater lessons
to impart.

So next time you pick up that jar that promises anti-aging
solutions, just remember that what ultimately counts is
what’s inside you.

I admire people who are very organized and who get things done
by sheer hard work and talent. But I admire more such people
who always leave room for the divine in their achievements and
plans. As we work for the good of the earth, for social justice
among peoples, and for the spread of the Gospel, let us not forget
God the beginning, the sustenance, and the end of all these human
endeavors. If we leave out the divine, we may become proud, and
if we are proud, we may become discouraged by failures and delays,
or worse, we may become angry, bitter, vain and empty.

" Music for Special Children "

THE NEW course, Music for Special Children, at Ryan Cayabyab,
the Music Studio, is especially designed to help mentally
and psychologically challenged children focus, relax, move to
rhythm and sing to the best of their ability. Its curriculum
consists of musical activities like listening, singing, moving
and creating.

The school will begin with classes for highly functional autistic
children. Each class of between three to five students will consist
of an hour-long session of activities that will address not only
the musical needs of the child, but his or her person as a whole.
The assessment for special children will be on Sept. 17.
