Reflections by Regine
FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
The Philippine Star 10/25/2005

On Nov. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19, and Dec. 9 and 10, Regine Velasquez will do a series of shows called Reflections at the Aliw Theater. Her guest performers are Ai Ai delas Alas, new singers Kim Flores and Jonalyn Viray, and the Wyeth Gifted Kids (saxophonist Jacob Sarreal, violinists Joseph Valdes and Paulina, and classical cellist Pocholo Gutierrez); with Raul Mitra, Regine’s brother-in-law (her sister Cacai’s husband), as musical director.

Included in the repertoire are songs that mean so much to Regine and that mark memorable moments in her life, songs that "talk about my dreams, my aspirations and even my heartaches," and songs from her all-time idols Barbra Streisand, Sheena Easton, Angela Bofill, Sharon Cuneta, Kuh Ledesma, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

In keeping with the theme of the concert, Funfare is publishing choice condensed quotations from Regine’s one-on-one with Showbiz Stripped aired last Saturday, requested by sleepyheads who missed that show.

• On "titles" (hers being Asia’s Songbird): Do they help? I guess so. ‘Yung titles hindi mo naman binibili, ibinibigay lang sa’yo ng mga tao. People believe that you’re really somebody if you have a "title." I’m flattered.

• On her childhood: We were very poor but we were happy. It’s only when you start growing up that you realize the hardships that your parents have to go through for you. My parents made sure that we ate on time and that was enough for me. Naaawa ako sa Tatay ko. He had scoliosis and he was working at a construction site; he wasn’t earning enough. My mom was good with money. She was able to stretch whatever little money we had.

• On her ambition to be a singer: I knew that I had the talent when I was three years old. Pinaglalaruan ako ng Nanay ko, e. She would make me stand on the table and make me sing, mali-mali ang lyrics at paliyad-liyad na parang si Pilita Corrales. The first song that I memorized was Buhat (by Rico J. Puno). It was my dad who taught me that song. As I grew older I began joining amateur contests. I must have joined more than 300 before I got to where I am now. The last was Ang Bagong Kampeon where I won the grand prize. My winning piece was In Your Eyes. Then, I became a recording artist of OctoArts Records.

• On her role models: Kuh Ledesma, of course! Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano and Joey Albert. It was Pops (Fernandez) who sort of discovered me. She saw me in one of her mall shows and she recommended me to guest on Penthouse (Pops’ early-’80s GMA show with Martin. – RFL). Ronnie (Henares) saw me on that show and he became my manager.

• On her being a probinsyana: I stayed for a while in Quezon City but I moved back to Bulacan. I was born in Manila but my family went back to Leyte, my father’s home province, and we stayed there for four years. When we went back to Manila, wala na ‘yung tinitirhan namin, so our family stayed at the house of my father’s sister in Bulacan. We never left Bulacan since then.

• On what more she can ask for: Everything that I’ve dreamed of has come true. And more! I’ve been able to travel all over and for me, bonus na ‘yon. I travel for free and get paid for performing at the same time. Ayoko namang ako lang ang nakakapag-travel, so I make it a point to bring along my parents and some of my siblings.

• On being choosy with men: I have my own standard at ayoko naman ibaba ‘yon. I’m not looking; I’ll just wait for whoever he is. The right marrying age? None! When you’re ready, that’s the right time. I used to be the breadwinner in our family but not anymore because nasa estado na silang lahat. Still, I don’t think it’s time for me to settle down. I still want to enjoy myself. I still want to do many other things, so that when I finally settle down, I won’t say, "Sayang, I should have done this, done that."

• On her dream wedding: I want it simple, with only very few friends invited. Not that I don’t want to share that very precious and memorable moment of my life but I’d rather keep it private, with no media coverage. I feel that I have shared a lot of myself with the public and I want naman that one big moment to be my own, amin na lang ng loved one ko.

• On ending up a spinster (horrors!): I was just joking when I said that. But if it’s my destiny, what can I do? I’ll accept it and be happy. Ganoon talaga, e, ano ang magagawa ko?

• On having a child out of wedlock: Of course, my dad was also joking when he said that he badly wanted a grandchild from me, kahit daw love child. Sayang naman daw ‘yung genes ko. They were kidding me, "Mag-anak ka na lang." Sabi ko, "How can I when I don’t even have a boyfriend yet?" Hmmmm, come to think of it.

• On her "ideal man": He has to have a sense of humor. I love to laugh. I’m a funny person myself. I’m a happy person. (Regine has so far had only one boyfriend, Ariel Rivera, who is now Gelli de Belen’s husband. Regine and Ariel broke up a decade ago. – RFL)

Regine auctions off gowns
Article posted October 25, 2005

Sikat si Regine as Asia’s Song bird. Inaabangan din ang fashion statement niya!

In Sunday’s episode of Mel and Joey, thirty of Regine’s gowns were auctioned off. Proceeds will go to GMA Kapuso Foundation in order to help cancer-patient children.

“These are beautiful gowns made by top designers," Regine attests.

Asia's Song Bird added that some of these gowns have sentimental value and some are also controversial.

Regine is happy that she will have the opportunity to help those children.

The Pinoy Pop Superstar host added that she always wanted to reach out to people. Naiyak pa siya nang makita ang kids.

Here’s her message for the kids which also guested in Mel and Joey: “Sana di sila mawawalan ng pag-asa. Pray sila lagi. [Kasi] pag kasama mo si God mas malayo mararating mo.”

Nights of immeasurable gifts
By AMYLINE QUIEN CHING

Thinking about classical and pop music made me think of the Ballad of East and West, a poem written by Rudyard Kipling, the first few lines of which I slightly modified…

Classic is classic

Pop is pop

And never the twain shall meet!

Won"t they? Never say never.

In what is truly an unprecedented show of musical prowess, gifted children Jacob Sarreal, Joseph Valdes, Paulina Gutierrez and brother Pocholo shed their classical pieces to turn on a new pop leaf in a series of concerts with Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez. The concert tagged "Reflections" will pay tribute to the music industry greats like Mariah Carey, Angela Bofil, Gloria Estefan, Kuh Ledesma and Sharon Cuneta.

"The first time I learned that we’ll be playing pop pieces, I was stunned. Scared actually. Though we have performed onstage countless times, this is our first time to play pop music. Performing with Regine Velasquez makes it all the more nerve-wracking," exclaims 13-year-old Paulina Gutierrez, who finds trading her Bach, Mozart and Tschaicovsky compositions to pop ones very difficult but nonetheless fun.

At the risk of shattering stereotypes, Paulina’s musical life does not only revolve around the classics. A true blue child of the 90s, she also loves alternative and rock music, listing the band Simple Plan as her most favorite.

"Their songs are so cool," she gushes. "I really really like them. Though it is truly difficult to adjust your style from classical to pop, little by little, I’m getting used to it. Maybe in the future, I could play other pieces. I also like Araw Gabi of Regine. The melody is great and it contains a little bit of classical in it."

Her brother Pocholo Gutierrez agrees that it is indeed challenging to change the style that they have been used but he is enjoying the process.

"Classical and pop are quite different. With pop, you can do hard and then soft. For me, it’s actually easier than classical. I just have to get use to it," he mentions.

Like his sister, Pocholo also had one great revelation. Who would have thought a classical musician would like rap?

"Hmm… I can’t really think of a pop piece that I like right now. Actually, I like rap more. My particular favorite is Bright Lights of Billy Crawford," he says.

GETTING INTO TIP-"POP" SHAPE

Knowing that they have their work cut out for them, the quartet are now doing rehearsals in preparation for the series of concerts, which is scheduled to open on November 4 and 5. The series will run every weekend until the closing date scheduled on December 9 and 10. And though they still have not rehearsed with Regine yet, they are sure that they will be comfortable working with the songbird… that is after they get over the initial onset of nerves and awe.

"I am both excited and nervous to finally rehearse with Regine. Right now, we are just practicing our piece."

Regine believes that the quartet will do a wonderful job in the concert. Though it is the first time that she’ll actually be performing with such young people, she has always imagined that kind of set-up. "I’ve always wanted to do this, to perform with young people. It’s a novelty," she enthuses.

Novelty is perhaps a word that would not even begin to describe the concert. The audience will certainly be in for lots of surprises especially with Regine at the directorial helm.

"I"ve certainly pulled out all the stops for this new show. It may be a smaller venue but that won"t stop me and the production team from giving our audience an A-list show!"

The show is also her way of reflecting on her growth as an artist. There, she will reveal the people and the things that brought her to where she is now. This is one show that her fans should not dare miss.

"Expect the ‘unexpectable,’" she exclaims with a laugh. "The concert will bring you lots of laughs, lots of good music and fun."

Regine reigns
PENPOINT By Ryan Mark
The Freeman 10/26/2005

That Regine Velasquez is "Asia"s Songbird" is already a given. She
has been successful in hauling hundreds of fans to fill her concert
venues. How far she has, indeed, come-from being a virtually unknown
provincial lass to the country"s most sought-after singer.

She is even a big star in the acting department. To top it all, her
BIG heart makes her stand out among contemporaries in the industry.
For that, she reigns high-and is blessed.

I"ve yet to see Regine in person. I"ve wondered in the past if she
really is beautiful or just telegenic? Is she for real or is she just
good in public relations?

After seeing her on GMA-7"s "Mel and Joey" last Sunday doing such a
noble act of auctioning her gowns for the benefit of less fortunate
children and the Kapuso Foundation, my eagerness to meet her has
grown intense. If and when that time comes, my purpose would no
longer be to rate her physical appearance, but to tell her personally
how happy I am to have come across someone, who at the peak of her
career, remains humble and grateful. I would want to whisper in her
ears how honored I am to have met a big star who never fails to look
back to where she came from. Bravo Regine!

Though you don"t know me, I would like to tell you that you are a
superstar on my list as far as attitude is concerned. Mel Tiangco
said that unknown to many Regine has been helping charitable
institutions for a long time already. Regine said she decided to have
the auction after watching the public service portion of the Kapuso
Foundation, helmed by Mel Tiangco, on "24 Oras." Regine said that
children would be happy over any assistance extended to them-be it a
book or a toy. She said that what keeps her doing such civic acts is
the different kind of satisfaction she gets from the mere smile on a
child"s face.

Actually, I can relate to that feeling being a volunteer myself for
The Freeman Foundation for several months now. My joining started
with a joke. I kiddingly told people that as a "beauty queen" I
should engage in civic/charity works. But then, when I became part of
a group of 20 who went to the mountain barangay of Tagbao in June to
hold a fun day for elementary students, it dawned on me that my
membership is not just for kicks nor because I want to be praised.
Rather, I love being of service to the community in my own little
way.

Seeing the children excited and contented with what you"ve given them
makes you realize how blessed you are after all. You don"t have to be
rich to be of help. All you need is the purest of intentions: be of
help without expecting anything in return. They say what you give
returns to you quadruple times. It might be true, but at the end of
the day, it"s the fulfillment that makes you feel like a millionaire.
Regine also said she wanted to help because she knows how it is to be
poor, having lived before that way in her hometown, Bulacan. Regine"s
wondrous act of helping others is an inspiration. No wonder she looks
radiant on television, it"s her inner beauty shining through.

My friends, you too can experience the joy in making children smile
this Christmas. Join us as The Freeman Foundation treats some 50
streetchildren to a fun-filled Christmas party on December 10. You
can donate anything-from toys, clothing to books. Remember your gift
does not have to be expensive because it"s the thought that really
counts. Take it from "Asia"s Songbird"! * * *
