Pinoy Pop Superstar Blog!

Well what can I say? Last night's Pinoy Pop Superstar finals was just awesome. My bet for this sort of Philippine AI ripoff has always been Brenan Espartinez. This guy just got me the first time he performed his flawless soul. That's right, flawless. This guy doesn't make mistakes. He's just a born performer, and I must say he'd be something new in our music industry filled with balladeers (who are starting, or have already started, to get on my easily irritated nerves). But to my surprise, and mostly to everyone's, it was Jonalyn Viray who bagged the title. Not to mention a house, a car, a recording contract and a million pesos. Whew. Look at all those moneys. *grammatical error intended*

I'm still glad anyhow that Jonalyn won. This only stomped on my doubts of the criteria the judges base on in choosing the champion. I used to think that they'd go for someone with a lot of market value. The prettiest or the most popular with fans. This time I'm glad I was wrong. Record that coz me admitting I was mistaken is a rare phenomenon.

I'm not saying, though, that Jonalyn didn't deserve her title and that I have my evil eyebrow raised at her. I've grown fond of these guys, all six of them (please, I'm sure nobody rooted for those two balikabayans they pulled to compete at the last minute from Canada and the US). And whoever would have won would deserve it for sure. These guys are good. Forgive my understating, I'm out of fancy words right now. I stayed up till 1:30 for this show, and right now I'm a zombie.

I can't wait for Jonalyn's unleashing. It's said that she'll be recording the theme song for Darna, which was not released since Miss Regine Velasquez is under Viva, and not GMA records. I've been waiting for this song to be released as single for a long time now. It's a good song. Told you I'm a zombie today.

I just hope the others will be given deals too. These guys are too good (gotcha) to lose.

GMA Network, Inc., the Philippines leading media company and one of Asia 's most admired broadcasting networks, carries its flagship talent search on primetime television, Pinoy Pop Superstar.

Pinoy Pop Superstar is hosted by Ms. Regine Velasquez, a seasoned singing competition winner and dubbed as Asia 's Songbird. The search opens its door to amateur singers aged 15 to 21 years old. Hopefuls endure the competitive auditions and rigorous trainings before being given the rare privilege to be a legitimate contender.

Now moving on to its concluding leg, Pinoy Pop Superstar has produced six (6) grand contenders from all walks of life coming from different parts of the country. PPS is still waiting for two more grand contenders from North America and USA , where a parallel search is also being conducted from among Filipino communities.

------ PPS Finals Review by Regine fan "SOP E." ---- >

I personally believe that Brenan should have won. His
entire peformances were consistently good. Before the
grand finals, my personal bet was Jonalyn and next was
Brenan. But I was really disappointed with Jonalyn's
rendition of Run to You. I don't know if she was just
nervous, but she didn't sing it quite well. Hirap na
hirap siya.

I also believe that they should have changed the set
of judges to avoid familiarity and personal favorites.
I’m not questioning the credibility of the judges, but
sometimes you cannot avoid becoming subjective when
you are already familiar with the person. Kristel’s
performance was awesome and yet she didn’t make it to
top 4. I personally believe that Charmaine, Brenan and
her had delivered the best performance in the initial
round. Brenan delivered the best performance in the
2nd round with her very stylish rendition of Careless
Whisper.

As for the Songbird, she was still awesome. Ang galing
ng rendition nya ng Kelly Clarkson song. Sad to say
but I could not foresee a future Regine Velasquez
among the contestants. But I still do hope that
Jonalyn would make it big as a singer, or surpass man
lang ang naabot ni Sarah Geronimo. Anyway, she is
still young and she could further enhance her voice. I
hope Brenan would follow the path of Christian
Bautista who was not even in the final 3 but was able
to make a name for himself in the recording industry.
The problem with Brenan is he sounds too foreign.

Overall, congratulations to GMA and all the people
behind the PPS. The presentation was really good. Lalo
And in the final round wherein the two finalists sang
the same song, I salute them for doing it. You would
really find out who among the contestants would
deliver the best rendition of the same song.

CONGRATS JONALYN VIRAY, THE FIRST EVER PINOY POP SUPERSTAR

CONGRATS JONALYN VIRAY for BEING THE FIRST PINOY POP SUPERSTAR! SEE you TO the NEXT SEASON of PINOY POP SUPERSTAR!

Nakamit ni Jonalyn ang mga premyong P1M in cash mula sa Coca Cola, 1 house & lot from Filinvest, brand new Toyota Innova, P100,000 worth of Belo Medical Services, P50,000 worth of Gandang Ricky Reyes services at recording deal contract mula sa GMA Records.

Charmaine Piamonte, MC Monterola, Brenan Espartinez, Jonalyn Viray,
Philbert de Torres at Sheila Ferrari.

face-off round na walo silang naglaban-laban.

songs nila, pramis!

Sa showdown ng Top 4 ay applauded ang Run to You ni Jonalyn,
Careless Whisper ni Brenan at She's Out of My Life ni Michael. I

Kapwa nila inawit ang theme song ng PPS na My Miracle at in the end
kauna-unahang Pinoy Pop Superstar!

* * *

Nakausap namin sila after the show sa backstage ng Araneta. Aminado

may pinakamaraming exposure.

* * *

nanalong Pinoy Pop Superstar?

Lahat magagaling. Pero sa tingin ko po
siguro, meron akong guts.

"But there can only be one Pinoy Pop Superstar, di ba? At saka sabi
nila, small but terrible daw po ako.
Christina, Regine at Kyla.

REGINE Velasquez kept on saying there can only be one Pinoy Pop Superstar, and in the end, the one who outshone them all was 16-year old Jonalyn Viray. In a previous column, we wrote that if they'd choose on the basis of voice alone, then Jonalyn has a good chance of winning as her set of vocal pipes are really outstanding.

Jonalyn is the eldest of 4 kids from San Mateo, Rizal. She has won first runner-up in "Birit Bulilit" of IBC-13 as a child and in "MTB Teen Pop Star." Born on November 15, 1989, she's a high school junior at Jose Laurel High in Proj. 4.

Her winning piece was Mariah Carey's "Never Too Far." At the finals night, she first sang "It Might Be You." From the eight finalists, four were chosen: Jonalyn along with Charmaine Piamonte, Michael Garcia and the crowd's favorite, Brenan Espartinez. In the second bout involving four of them, Jonalyn sang Whitney Houston's "Run to You". She was chosen to be one of the final two contenders, the other being Brenan who sang George Michael's "Careless Whisper". In their face off, they both sang "My Miracle" and it was Jonalyn who emerged as the champ. She won P1 million cash prize from Coca Cola, a Futura Classic house and lot from Filinvest, a brand new Toyota Innova, an exclusive one-year recording contract with GMA Records, plus services and gift certiciates from Gandang Ricky Reyes, Belo Medical, and designer Edwin Tan. Brian won the Coca Cola Most Admired Superstar Award plus P20,000 cash.

The Big Dome was overflowing with people all eager to find out who'd win in the first Pinoy Pop Superstar contest. The judges were composer Danny Tan, director Floy Quintos, soul diva Jaya, R&B princess Kyla and GMA Records EVP/CEO Felipe Yalong. Even if Brenan, Michael and Charmaine didn't bag the title, we're sure GMA-7 will not let them go as they're all very promising and super talented. As far as we're concerned, they should also be given their own albums, particularly Brenan who already has his own legion of fans, judging from the number of his supporters at the Araneta that night. Regine says Pinoy Pop Superstar Year 2 will be an even bigger one. So, join now! THREE FILIPINO CANADIANS got their big break from GMA Records with their debut album, "604" (pronounced Six-O-Four) launched at Hard Rock Cafe. 604 is the area code of Vancouver, where they first tried their luck as singers.

The three macho guys are Nino Sanzo, Ross Calixterio and Francis Baguio, all born and raised in Toronto. They met each other in a Catholic high school and started singing in campus affairs. At 18, they all moved to Vancouver where they met a producer who brought them to Hamburg, Germany and asked them to record an album which, unfortunately was never released. "But we appreciate the experience because we got to sing with various international singers there like NSync," says Francis, the only married guy among them. His wife is Mary, a balikbayan from England who he met here in Manila. They came to Manila and tried to market their finished album here but no one would take it.

They met Ronnie Henares who then brought them to GMA-7 and they started singing in "S.O.P." Now, GMA Record has given them their own album, "Bringin' It", and they're glad that Pinoy listeners are finally given the chance to listen to their own distinct kind of music. Francis composed two songs in it, "Bring It" and "Queen of My Castle". The other great cuts are "All This Time", "Fly Away" "Paano Na", "Kung Maibabalik", "In the Rain", and the carrier single, a revival of Brian McKnight's "Win". Now that they're based in Manila, the three guys have discovered how beautiful the original country of their parents is. Are they really the best of friends? "More than that, we're like brothers," says Francis. "We may get on each other's nerves every now and then, but we get over it easily." IS IT TRUE THERE'S now stiff competition between the directors of GMA-7's toprated telefantasias "Darna" and "Encantadia"? "Darna" is megged by Dominic Zapata and Eric Quizon. "Encantadia" is megged by Mark Reyes and Gil Tejada. Both make use of elaborate costumes, sets, and special effects, but we heard the directors of "Darna" work faster, taping several sequences a day so they're more cost effective for management. On the other hand, "Encantadia" directors work so slowly, sometimes taping only three or four sequences a day, so it comes out as more expensive. How true?

------------- P. P. S. article ------------ >

Pati Mga Press People, Nagpustahan Sa Pinoy Pop Superstar

Regine's ex-manager was mentioned in this article. Please
note our latest music investigation tidbit posted in the

That they were being just as influenced and manipulated

Still under bird feather investigation..

Little Jonalyn is now a big star

By: Danny T. Vibas

We Filipinos are superb at singing. Honest-to-goodness singing. And
we start really young. So by the time we're in our teens, some of
us
have become champion amateur singers. But some amateur singers make
it big time, some never do. Will Jonalyn Viray make it?

Jonalyn, the GMA 7 amateur singing contest Pinoy Pop Superstar's
first grand champion, is only 15 years old and was the smallest
among the eight contenders on Sunday night's grand finals of the
GMA
7 amateur singing contest Pinoy Pop Superstar. She was also the
youngest.

The eight contenders of Pinoy Pop Superstar were all in their teens
(early twenties at the most). The grand showdown held at the Araneta
Coliseum was single-handedly hosted by Regine Velasquez, who was
herself the champion of an amateur singing contest then known as
Tawag ng Kampeon. Each of the eight contenders was a champion in the
10-month singing contest for at least four Sundays. (Contest rules
require that winners for less than four weeks cannot qualify for the
grand finals.)

Jonalyn won only for four weeks. She sang "I Wanna Run To
You" for
her second piece. She won for herself P1-million cash from Coca
Cola, a house and lot from Filinvest, a Futura Classic Toyota car,
and services worth several thousands of pesos from the Belo Medical
Group and from Ricky Reyes's chain of salons.

Jonalyn comes from San Mateo, Rizal, and is the eldest child in the
family. Her father works at Purefoods. Both of her parents watched
the show at the Big Dome, along with two younger siblings. Jonalyn
is an incoming senior student at the Jose P. Laurel High School.

Contenders

Three of the contenders were from the provinces and only two from
Metro Manila. One was from Canada and another from the United
States. GMA 7 conducted searches in those countries not only because
of their huge Filipino populations but also in preparation for the
launch of a cable network service there as a counterpart of The
Filipino Channel operated by rival ABS-CBN 2.

Michael Anthony Garcia hails from Iligan City, Mindanao, and was
raised singly by his father along with three siblings. Michael's
father is a humble truck driver in Iligan. Happily, he made it to
the Big Dome to watch his youngest son compete.

On grand finals night, Michael seemed to have had the biggest fan
support. He was, after all, the contest's first weekly champion
who
went on to reign for seven weeks before he lost the title. And
though barely over five feet, he is handsome and sweet-faced. Very
boyish.

Michael's fans even had tarpaulin photos of him. They occupied
hundreds of seats in the Big Dome's lower and upper boxes, and
most
of the general admission seats. They screamed his name, battling it
out with the equally screaming fans of Brenan Espartinez,
Charmaine
Piamonte, Kristel Astor, MC Montirola and Jonalyn. Only Sheila
Ferrari and Philbert de Torres had no fans to scream out their names
as they from the United States and Canada, respectively.

Judgment night

The judges sat a few meters from the stage, each equipped with a
computer to input scores. The panel was headed by Philip Yalong,
executive vice president and chief operations officer of GMA
Records. The others were composer-musical director Danny Tan,
singers Jaya and Kyla, TV and theater director Floy Quintos.

Star quality took 60 percent of the contenders' rating, while
only
40 percent was allotted to musicality. In the first round, fans'
text votes were factored in, but the second and final rounds used
only the judges' ratings.

Charmaine, Jonalyn, Michael and Brenan made it to the second round,
for which their scores were reverted to zero. Jonalyn and Brenan had
to sing the same song for the final showdown and the song was the
show's theme, "My Miracle," composed by Danny Tan, and
which all the eight contenders had already performed in groups
in the show's past telecasts.

Fan power

The fans easily filled up the place, bringing with them huge
streamers and posters announcing their support for a particular
contender. Some fans even flashed elongated red balloons shaped in
letters that spelled out their idol's name, specifically that of
Brenan, a Metro Manilan who later emerged as second placer. He is a
little-known actor on educational TV shows and was part of the short-
lived youth show on GMA 7, Bestfrends (yes, spelled without the
"i")
hosted by German Moreno.

Brenan was voted by fellow contenders "Most Admired Finalist" and
was given by Coca Cola a cash prize of P20,000. A counterpart of the
same amount was also donated to the GMA 7 Kapuso Foundation.

Album

After the grand finals, GMA Records put together the Pinoy Pop
Superstar The Finalists album that features the six winning contest
pieces of each contender including "If You're Not the One" by
Michael, "If You Don't Know Me by Now" by Kristel,
I believe" by Charmaine, "Through the Fire" by MC, "Home"
by Brenan and "My Miracle" by all six.

It is available in CDs and cassettes in record stores nationwide.
