Lengthy Aliw Awards honors live acts
By DENNIS LADAW

Although the Aliw Awards was established to pay tribute to live shows, its 18th awards night on Wednesday wouldn't rate a nomination in any of its own categories. The show took five hours to finish, leaving what audience was left either exhausted or indifferent to whoever won.

Even a winner told this writer the production was disorganized, what with the production glitches, the delays and the faux pas. At one point, presenter Gabby Valenciano, tasked to announce the Male Best Lounge Performer declared Ana Fegi the winner. It took at least 15 minutes to correct the error.

The evening’s top award was given to Valenciano’s father, Gary Valenciano. The singer/dancer/songwriter, who turns 41 this month, picked up his third Entertainer of the Year award, making him eligible for the Aliw Hall of Fame. Only one other singer has been named to the Hall of Fame, Martin Nievera.

Other big winners of the night were Ana Fegi and Robert Seña, who copped the female and male category, respectively of the Best Performer in Hotels, Music Lounges and Bars. In the Group category, the winners were Spirit of ’67 (for Classic Songs) and MYMP (Pop).

The show also paid tribute to the best live concerts staged in 2004. Winners included Gary Valenciano (male), Lea Salonga (female), Bamboo (group), and the joint concert of Sarah Geronimo, Rachel Ann and Eric Santos (collaboration).

In the theater circuit, Monique Wilson bested fellow Miss Saigon Lea Salonga in the Best Actress in a Musical category for her performance in New Voice Company’s production of Cabaret. Salonga was a nominee for Baby.

Wilson, however, wasn’t around to accept the award as the actress/director is presently in London. On hand to accept the award was her brother Jaime Wilson, who performed an excerpt from the musical.

Ricci Chan won the Best Actor in a Musical for Penis Talk. The winning musical, however, was Oyayi.

The awards were held at the Manila Hotel’s Fiesta Pavilion, which was transformed into a transit lounge of sorts by the winning celebrities. A number of the awardees, such as the members of the Spirit of ’67, arrived late but in time to collect their trophies. Valenciano and his family entered the venue before midnight but they had to wait another two hours before he could seize the stage and accept his accolade. A few who accepted their awards decided not finish the show.

The lovely and talented Mishka Addams waited patiently for her category (Best New Artist) though ‘Life & Times’ congratulated her in advance. Only her manager accompanied the winner.

Thankfully, the speeches were brief and the evening’s rousing moments came courtesy of the theater groups, which performed the nominated musicals, a la Tony Awards. Hosts Vernie Varga and Christian Bautista also charmed the audience with an impromptu rendition of "All I Ask of You" during the long breaks.

Special Lifetime Achievement awards were given to balladeer Victor Wood, ballet maven Shirley Halili-Cruz, jazz pianist Romy Posadas, the Mabuhay Singers, German Moreno and former First Lady Imelda Marcos.

In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Marcos noted that when she was First Lady, she said she had set out to show off the "great beauty and talent of the Filipino people to the world. It’s why she established Cultural Center of the Philippines, she continued. As she went on and on, the band started playing a slow, soft tune, perhaps to signal it was time for her to get off the stage.

That’s no way to treat a gracious winner who arrived on time (at 6 p.m. sharp as indicated in the invitations) to just wait another three hours for the program to start.

Regine was nominated at the Aliw Awards

Regine gets 2 nominations. One with Pops Fernandez
in concert? One for her solo concert last December..

A "good" Regine fan asked this question :

" Why hasn't Regine win the Entertainment of the Year
Award? Thru all these years, we all know (fans or
otherwise) that she deserves it. It's been long
overdue.."

mmJun:

" Why indeed.."
