Viewfinder : Upping the Ante
( Contest related. So PPS related. Yeah? )

FOR SEVERAL Saturdays now on Channel 2 at 4:30 p.m.,
the reality competition and talent search "Close-Up to Fame"
has been featuring fresh-faced new wannabe models who have
made it as finalists after a nationwide competition.

There were 24 who started the journey in pursuit of their dream
of becoming Close-Up models, but quite a number of them have
since been eliminated.

The challenges have become more daunting for the "survivors,"
as the TV tilt keeps raising its competitive ante, to make sure
that its ultimate winners will be more than up to the task
of being the next signature Close-Up advertising models.

We've caught two rounds of the competition to date. The first
Saturday we tuned in, the challenge was for them to create their
own costumes and make-up for fantasy pictorials along the themes
of the Return of Panday, Kabuki Day, Aliens Invading Manila,
and A Gathering of Mermaids.

More recently, we saw the surviving pairs being trained as
ramp models, getting shouted at due to their awkwardness,
being thoroughly rattled when their clothes and props were
intentionally jumbled up, but finally coming through
as resolute professionals on the catwalk.

Other rounds have required them to impersonate show biz icons,
and to re-create moments in Close-Up commercials. After each
episode, the scores submitted by the show's resident critics
combined with viewers' text votes decide on which young models
"stay alive" into the next week's round.

We've seen how the initially raw talents have perforce been
honed by the tilt's varied and stringent tests. The training
process has been generally effective, so we trust that the
"final-final" survivors will truly be ready for the rigors
of the modeling jobs up ahead.

The Close-Up model search is particularly attractive to
young comers because, through the years, the toothpaste
brand's commercials have launched many talents into
eventual TV-film stardom.

We trust that, now that the model search is being televised,
stardom will be achieved, not just by the winning pair, but by
some of the also-rans, as well.
