It’s the Mrs. Monteverde Film Festival (MMFF) again!

Regal Films matriarch Lily Monteverde has four entries for the 2006
MMFF, just like last year.

NOTE: Wat da..?! Keanna Reeves, again?! She only had the
biggest flop of a local movie I have ever heard about in
my life and she is going to star in another movie?! Boy,
does Boy Abunda have pull or what? hehe.. All those many
talented and even not-so-talented-but-more-talented-than-
Keanna-Reeves out there, di ba? So why does she get to
star in a movie still? After proving how to kill one!
Think about it, pinoy movie/music fans.. -mmJun >;-)

talent like Keannu Reeves?! While attacking those who do?!"

Contrary to what was initially announced, the forthcoming Metro
Manila Film Festival will have only nine entries, not 10. What
should have been the tenth entry, the sex comedy Short Time was not
able to meet the deadline. According to its producer Orly Ilacad,
the film will be shown instead on a regular play date in 2007.

Whether there are 9 or 10 MMFF entries, some wags still like to
decode the acronym "MMFF" as the "Mrs. Monteverde Film Festival"
because the country’s most enduring film matriarch has four entries
this year, just in 2005.

Mother Lily continues her festival series Mano Po with a fifth
sequel. Subtitled "Gua Ay Di," this one stars Angel Locsin, Richard
Gutierrez, Lorna Tolentino, Tirso Cruz III and Gina Alajar.

Another festival series of her is Shake, Rattle & Roll 8 and it
stars Keanna Reeves, Roxanne Guinoo, Sheryl Cruz, Iza Calzado and
Manilyn Reynes.

Mother Lily’s astrologer, combined with her business acumen, further
urged her to come up with a gay-themed fantasy comedy called Zsazsa
Zaturnnah top-billed by Zsa Zsa Padilla, Pops Fernandez and Rustom
Padilla. The title role is a woman, a super-heroine supposedly from
outer space and portrayed by Dolphy’s live-in sweetheart and mother
of the singer-actress Karylle. The character’s earthly incarnation,
however, is that of a gay beautician, and is portrayed by Zsa Zsa’s
real-life and self-confessed gay uncle, Rustom. Pops, in a costume
that uncovers more than covers her, portrays one of the villains
from outer space.

Super Noypi may be produced under the MAQ Films but everyone in the
industry knows that the "M" in the initials stands for "Monteverde."
Directed by the comebacking Quark Henares, this movie is a youth-
targeted potboiler starring Mark Herras, Jennylyn Mercado and
Sandara Park.

If Mother Lily seems addicted to the MMFF, she is not alone in the
very profitable vice. The comedian Vic Sotto’s fans won’t miss him
in this year’s festival as he is back with the third installment of
his Enteng Kabisote legend, which is now subtitled The Legend Goes
On and On. Kristine Hermosa goes on, too, as his leading lady.

Though Vic is known to be co-producer of the Enteng Kabisote
festival series through his M-Zet Productions, the film is listed as
an entry of OctoArts, which is owned mainly by Orly Ilacad.

Boss Orly is also the producer of Canary Film’s Matakot Ka sa Karma,
which should give fans of Gretchen Barretto a reason to rejoice.
Billionaire Tonyboy Cojuangco’s live-in partner is making her sexy
way back into the movies via this year’s festival. Gretchen joins
Rica Peralejo and Angelica Panganiban this horror trilogy.

Guess who else is back on the MMFF scene? Cesar Montano and his CM
Films, that’s who! This time around, he has allowed wife Sunshine
Cruz to pit her acting mettle against him in their entry Ligalig,
which he himself directs—just like his much awarded Panaghoy sa Suba
at the 2004 MMFF, which also reaped other awards outside the
festival. The foxy Gwen Garci plays the other woman in the story.

Practically a newcomer to the MMFF this year is Violett Films, which
is fielding Tatlong Baraha, starring father and sons Lito Lapid
(yes, the senator), Mark Lapid (yes, the governor), and Maynard
Lapid. Violett Films has long wanted to have a festival entry. Their
much-awarded Magnifico—a big winner in international festivals and
local award-giving bodies—was a rejected MMFF entry in 2003.

Star Cinema’s Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo may turn out to be the MMFF’s
most awaited entry. It is, after all, the first movie together of
real-life lovebirds Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo. And as if to
make sure that the Judy Ann and Ryan fans will see in Kasal, Kasali,
Kasalo will not be the same characters they play in their TV soaps,
Star Cinema has cast them in a romantic comedy—the better to
capitalize on their real-life love affair, of course.

All in all, moviegoers will have a chance to see four fantasy films,
two horror movies, one romantic drama, one romantic comedy and one
suspense thriller at the 2006 MMFF.

The traditional parade of stars, scheduled on December 24, will
begin on Quezon Avenue and end on Sotto Street, within the CCP
Compound. Awards night is set on December 29.

Manila Broadcasting Co., which coproduces the annual event together
with the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), will also mount
two raffle promos where as much as P25,000 will be given away.

The MMMF covers several urban centers in the country and not Metro
Manila. The year-end event, which unreels right on Christmas Day, is
still very much a project of the MMDA whose chairman remains to be
the charismatic and credible Bayani Fernando.
