Giovannie Pico opens foundation to help Pinoy street children
By ROME JORGE

( STREET CHILDREN AND CHILDREN IN GENERAL HAS BEEN A MAJOR CONCERN
OF THE SONGBIRD. THERE IS A U.N. STORY ABOUT REGINE AND STREET
CHILDREN ON THE NET. -M.I.B. )
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It is not just another celebrity endorsement. When Commission on
Filipinos Overseas (CFO) Secretary Dante Ang thought of the idea
that Giovannie Pico should be the face of a campaign that would
engage caring and well-to-do Filipinos to fiscally sponsor street
children in the country, he could not have chosen a better person
for the job.

Giovannie Pico, 26, Hollywood actress of the multiawarded television
series E.R., is not just another balikbayan star; she is a Filipina
back on her native soil with a mission. The Giovannie Pico
Foundation, besides partnering with the CFO in endorsing its program
for street children, is also setting up a house in her hometown of
Tondo, where victims of domestic violence can seek refuge.

Pico is a woman whose personal life endears her to street children
and victims of domestic violence. A young mother with a 5-year-old
son, she couldn’t help heave a sigh upon witnessing the street
urchins outside a restaurant in her hometown. "I can’t imagine my
son being in that same situation," she confides. "It’s so common
here, people forget it’s a problem. Sometimes apathy is worse
than
hate."

Breaking the cycle of abuse

This Hollywood actress is also twice a victim of sexual, physical
and emotional abuse. Her first stepfather, an American, molested her
between the ages of 3 and 4. Her mother went to America at age 18 as
an illegal immigrant. Her mother found out about the abuse when Pico
was 12 and broke up with Pico’s first stepfather immediately
after.
Later in life, the hurt estranged Pico from her mother and her
second stepfather. "I thought she hadn’t stood up for me," the
young
lady recalls.

Later in life, the patterns of abuse repeated themselves. Her
abusive ex-husband, a half-Filipino church deacon much older than
her, cloistered her in her own home, forbade her from going out, and
even threw things at her. "Victims of abuse fall into modes of
relationships that they think they deserve," confesses Pico. After
seven years of marriage, she separated from him in 2003. It was only
after she freed herself from her own abusive relationship that Pico
reconciled with her mother and her new stepfather. "We’re really
close right now," she says.

Survivor

Pico’s sense of advocacy is built on these life experiences. "I
admire Angelina Jolie, not because she’s got Brad Pitt, but
because
she gives back so much. As a United Nations ambassador, she’s a
role
model," she gushes. As she rises to fame in Hollywood she keeps her
feet firmly planted in her home country and its social issues.

Pico’s family left Tondo for America when she was but 2 years of
age. Throughout her young life, she enrolled at various acting and
theater schools such as Adda Clavenger Theater School, the American
Conservatory Theater, the Lefler Academy of the Arts, Bressi and
Company and the First Take Company. Nancy Berwid, her mentor at
First Take, later became her manager.

She began to voice-over for cartoons, games and toys in 2002. Her
unique voice, demure, perky and sassy all at the same time, allowed
her to play the roles of both young boys and girls. But more than a
gifted voice, Pico possessed a unique Asian charm with morena
complexion and a megawatt smile.

Her role in E.R. as the medical student named "Ludlow" is but her
most prominent among many appearances. The television pilot
series "The Shadowlands" with Gary Busey and the films American
Yearbook and Mail Order Bride for both of which she played the lead
character are but some of the ever increasing roster credits to her
name. Consistent with her convictions, Pico also starred in the
staging of Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues in the San Francisco
Bay
area.

The future is bright for Giovannie Pico. But even as her star
brightens Hollywood, it also promises to illuminate the lives of
street children and abused women here in the country.
