Freddie Santos guided Regine the First 5 years
( Stage Director )

Phil. Star, April 25, 2007

Reader's Reaction
by Ricardo F. Lo

And here's a reaction to a recent Funfare item, from
stage director Freddie Santos:

Thanks, Ricky, for featuring a sensible interview with
Piolo Pascual. Maybe it's media fatigue but between the
hyper press releases from his producers and the envy-laden
mudslings from his detractors, the guy has become tedium
to read about. Finally, something about the human, and
whaddaya know, a very amiable human at that.

Simplicity is indeed the key and I thank God that Piolo
knows enough to discern which comments to respond to and
which to just ignore.

Regine Velasquez, whose artistry I had the delight of guiding
for the first five years of her career, has had to deal with
such situations more often than there are miles between Manila
and Tabang-Guiguinto. And Piolo is spot on when he spots on
Regine's discipline.

In the five years I was training and directing her, Regine,
Ang Reyna ng NLEX, was never late. Janno, whom I was training
at the same time and who lived in San Juan, was never early.
Sigh.

From Piolo's reaction to how Regine conducts her sense of time,
I get the impression he does not work often with punctual co-stars.

How I wish all artists, all people, would understand the virtue
and vitality of punctuality.

Biblically, the unconditionally-loving God actually does
have one condition for humans to meet before He brings
about a miracle: It's not the number of prayers, it's not
the height and depth of sacrifices, it is simply...
be there on time. JUST TURN UP.

Which is why I believe the most crucial three-word phrase
in the world is not I Love You but HERE I AM.

Piolo and Regine, whether for Biblical reasons or otherwise,
are obviously trying to be there. And in doing so, they're
learning what baggage to unload to keep the burden light,
and the journey, unstopping.

May they, and you, be blest with more milestones.

Regine Sought GMA-7 Permission for Star Cinema Movie
by Kaye Villagomez

+ + + + + + + + + + + +
NOTE: Interesting to note that Regine is said to be
the one to ask permission. But I know it had to be
people from Viva and Star Cinema who had to be the
ones to get the go-ahead for filming. -Inside word
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

Regine Velasquez crossing over ABS-CBN, Piolo Pascual
promoting on GMA7. Impossible? Think again. How about
"Paano Kita Iibigin," the new Star Cinema & Viva-
produced romantic drama that will allow both network
stars to crossover the warring networks to promote
the film.

"If there's one good thing that came out of this project
aside from the fact that I got to work with Piolo in a
film is that it gives us a chance to appear on either
networks," Regine told the media recently at a press
conference held for "Paano Kita Iibigin."

"I asked permission from GMA and they understood naman.
Pumayag naman sila and even excited that Piolo will get
to guest sa Kapuso network," she added.

She said she just needed to blurt out the truth about
network wars: "There is no network war in real life.
Lahat naman yan, including the stars, are friends.
Sorry ha, but I hate to burst the bubble yet it's the
truth. We're all friends here. It's just that a little
competition makes it all more exciting."

When Regine was asked if she needed to ask permission
from her "papa," she wriggled off the hot seat
and answered, "Si papa Gerry? Okay lang naman daw sa
kanya na gumawa ako ng sexydrama with Piolo."

REGINE'S BOLDEST EVER

If talks were right, Regine might have showed bits of
upper body exposure for "Paano Kita Iibigin." But she
would rather keep the revelations at bay.

Not until the movie premieres at the very least. "You
have to watch what I was willing to give in this
movie."

Clearer confirmation came from "Paano Ka Iibigin"
director Joyce Bernal. "There were times Regine refused
to do the things I asked her, especially with the love
scenes. But at the end of the day, she gave me much
more than I needed and expected of her."

Regine joked that she only had to look at Piolo topless
for motivation. "Pinagsamantalahan ko si Piolo. Makikita
n'yo naman sa movie. In case you chance upon my mother,
just tell her it was all computerized and that I didn't
do most of it. Yung nanay ko kasi 'pag matagal na sa
one minute ang kissing scene, sinisita ang co-star ko
at sinasabihan na, 'Tama na 'yan!' As if mapapahinto
niya ang movie. Kaya please lang, do me a favor 'pag
nakita ninyo ang nanay ko, paki sabi, kinomputer lang
ang lahat."

In one major love scene, Bernal instructed Piolo of
the big-league passion she wanted out of him, "Piolo,
sa eksena na ito, kukunin mo ang kaluluwa ni Regine.
After kunan yung eksena, I had to tell Regine,
'Regine, ibalik mo 'yung kaluluwa ni Piolo!' Siya
ang kumuha!"

Like all the hapless lovers meeting for fiery passion,
Piolo and Regine's characters gave everything away.
As mature characters that have been through a lot in
their separate pasts, Piolo and Regine eventually gave
in to a passion-dominated affair.

Regine confessed she was taken away. "Sino ba naman
ang hindi madadala kay Piolo. Guwapo, ang ganda ng
katawan, mabait, matalino. Imposibleng hindi mo siya
magustuhan. It's very easy to fall in love with Piolo.

This movie really made me know Piolo better."

At first, Piolo was too shy, Regine pointed out.
"Nahihiya siya sa akin and I knew I had to make him
feel comfortable because we are going to do a lot
of scenes that will require us to be comfortable with
each other."

There were too many steamy scenes between Regine and
Piolo that they had to wind up closer after the
shoot. "Sabi ko nga kay Regine, 'Tapos na pala ang
shoot. Bitin. But we didn't do anything that was
beyond what was required by the movie's script.
Lahat naman ng ginawa namin kailangan sa movie."

In "Paano Kita Iibigin," Piolo plays a very depressed
guy whose wife passed in an untimely demise. The tragedy
made him want to do anything that would probably lead
to his suicide just so he could join his wife in the
afterlife. He returned to the beach resort where he
met his wife and there he met Regine's character.

Everything changed from there. Regine plays a single
mom who found herself strangely drawn to Piolo's
character. After emotions were tried to control,
they ended up falling madly and passionately into
each other. And this is where the movie starts to
heat up.

"These are really mature roles we played,"
revealed Piolo. "I'm just glad I was able to share
this experience with Regine."

Piolo said the same things as far as Regine is
concerned. "It has been my dream to do a movie with
Regine. And do a soundtrack of a movie tapos si Regine
pa yung partner ko."

Regine added, "One of the things we wanted to achieve
was bring back the good old days when movies carry
original titles and original theme songs. We hope
we achieved this through this film."

But when asked whether she was (is) in love at the moment,
Regine gave a breath-out-but-loud-and-clear, "Yeah" as
a response.

Then she refused to elaborate.

At this juncture of the press conference, Regine kept
made the media felt she would hint on something then
hold back. When it finally became an obvious pattern
and no straight answers will be revealed anyhow,
the entertainment media decided to leave it as that.

Still, "Paano Kita Iibigin" is the story and might just
be the movie worth watching this season. Confessions or
no confessions, the movie sounds as promising as it
is supposed to be sexy.
