Date Posted: 19:44:40 11/05/09 Thu

Hey in the Dirt Family,

Dave and I are excited to Trailboss this In The Dirt Weekend. Cougar Buttes is always a great spot, so much to do. For those of you with GPS, camp is at N 34 29.521 W 116 49.642. We will be out Thursday night late. As Dan said you turn down Camp Rock road for approx 4 miles to Granite Road (N34 30.103 W 116 51.446), you then follow the dirt road for approx. 2 miles and turn right. Watch for signs should all be up early Friday morning.

Along with the Swap Meet and rides we are playing BINGO on Saturday, can’t wait to see all.

Please post your attendance on the website message board for Roll Call so we know you’re coming.

The weather should be high 70s in the day and low 40s at night, if you all could bring a bundle of wood it would help make our fire a big one.

God Bless and safe travels
Matt and Dave.

Here is Dan's email with directions, please respond to Lisa Roll Call. See you all there.

Well it's that time again! Time to shine up, tune up and load up. I pray that this off season has been a fruitful time for you and your family and that you are ready to head back out In The Dirt! We are excited about what God is waiting to do in this ministry this year! If you haven't checked the web site, our first ride is Randsburg which is always a favorite. There are rumblings that folks will be headed out Thursday, so make sure to check in on the message board. For those of you that aren't familiar with the Randsburg area, we are 34.6 miles north of Kraemer Junction (395 & 58). From there, you will cross a set of railroad tracks and it will be about 2.7 miles from there. You will climb a slight grade and there will be a cow sign on the right hand side. Look for the ITD signs on the road side. From there it's about a mile into camp and the road will be marked by thursday afternoon.
Our trailbosses for the weekend will be Dave Kearley and Robert Murray. I have heard that there is going to be a pancake breakfast Saturday morning! This is a great way to start the season and to meet new people! The weather is calling for warm days in the 80's and nights to be mid 50's, so make sure to bring some shorts and sunblock! JackRabbits will be held on Saturday and hosted by the Kearley Family. If you are going to have kids in JackRabbits, please make sure to respond on the message board so that we have adequate supplies. The message Saturday night will be on Seasons. The fireside will start at 7:30 to make good use of the last few of the long days. We will have our desert bar after the fireside, so bring your favorite desert to share with your friends!

In His Service,
Dan O'Connell

Subject: Planning Picnic on June 19th at 4:30

Author:
The O'Connells
[Edit]

Date Posted: 20:32:31 07/02/09 Thu

For those of you that haven't been to our annual picnic before in July, this is the time where we ALL plan for the following year and hope that you will join us on June 19th at 4:30! (Please RSVP yes or no to Jessica O'Connell at jd.oconnell@gmail.com. We are going to be having a pot luck of main dishes, sides, etc. We will provide the drinks and paper products. Also she can give you directions.)

As this ministry continues to grow it can't be done without all the volunteers who make it what it is! This year we would love to have you ALL involved! Here is a list of all the volunteer opportunities for you to review.

Please take the time to pray about where God would have you serve and come ready to sign up on July 19th! We will have a poster for each of the categories below with a spot for each month for you to sign up! "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Colossians 3:23-24

Out of the Dirt Activities: This past year everyone really enjoyed getting together "Out of the Dirt." We had movie nights, beach days, and lots of pot lucks. We would love for you to sign up to host and/or plan an "Out of the Dirt" activity either at your home, a park, the beach, or other location that allows us all to get together for a time of fellowship.
Out of the Dirt Dates (all Saturdays):
September 19, October 17, November 21, December 19, January 23, February 20, March 20, April 24, May 22

Campfire Games: Help Jessica O'Connell come up with and lead a campfire game that is suitable for families and a campfire atmosphere. One volunteer per month is needed.

Jackrabbits: Help Michelle Peltzer organize games, activities, and/or bible study lessons for the kids for Saturdays. We need one volunteer per month.

Trailboss: Being a trail boss is a great way to meet everyone in the group and really expose yourself to connecting! Don't let leading rides scare you off from being a trail boss. The trail boss organizes and coordinates the weekend activities. The following list is meant to help them so that everybody makes it to the camping spot and we all have a safe and fun weekend.
Verify that the chosen location is open for us to ride at least a month ahead of time so we can reschedule if need be. This responsibility can be shared among 2 individuals/families.
2009-2010 Ride Schedule:
October 2-3-4 - Matt's Place
November 6-7-8 - Cougar Buttes
December 11-12-13 - Ocatillo South
January 8-9-10 - Trona Road
February 5-6-7 - Dove Springs
March 5-6-7 - TBA
April 9-10-11 - Cal City
May 7-8-9 - Matt's Place

We want to thank everyone from ITD for helping our family out this past weekend. As many of you know our Excursion would not start as we were packing up to leave Gorman and had to be towed to a local service station. The ITD family was there to offer help, support, prayers, rides home, to and from, picking up our trailer, food, snacks, you name it, it was offered. Many, many thanks to you all!! It is so great to know that we have a church family out there that has everyones back when something goes wrong. It is such a blessing. We are very grateful. (p.s. Our Excursion is fixed and hopefully will be picked up Thursday.) Thanks again, sincerely, the Northrup family

Many have asked how mike is coming along and I'm happy to say that he is coming along.....just slowly that's all.
He is still in the trauma until (now 10 days) at Loma Linda Hospital. His removed spleen last Saturday has caused his insides to do some re-adjusting and therefor he has been on a clear liquids diet for 4 days (driving him crazy).
His 8 broken ribs are healing and although still very painful, he does find it easier to move in his bed and is down to only two painkillers instead of 3.
He still has suction his lungs inflated and drained of blood. Perhaps these tubes will come out today?
He is able to sit up in bed now and is working on moving his arms and legs to keep blood flow moving in his limbs, not being able to even move your torso without extreme pain has made it hard to keep his arms and legs from becoming weak.
Our concern now is for the Martin family finances. Mike is the sole provider and is in the hard hit construction industry. Being out of work for the past 10 days, and possible the next 2 months, is bound to take an enormous toll on their ability to keep food on the table, gas in the car and the electricity turned on, not to mention the mortgae and other bills that go along with home ownership.
We have created an account so that his In The Dirt family can give if they are led to. Dan O and Robert M will post the details later today or tomorrow on how you can give to the Martins in this great time of need.
Mike and Nicol are so blessed by our continued support and prayers. Please don't stop.
Blessings,
ScottyB

Dear Scott @ all our brothers & sisters in Christ, Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. God has blessed our family with such incredible Godly servants! Seeing His love for us in the people praying for Michael, and sending their love thru texts, phone calls, emails, it truly is overwhelming. Here is the latest... Michael was moved out of ICU this evening. He has eaten real food & enjoyed a coke on ice (his favorite!) The latest scan has showed multiple small fractures on the right rib cage also. The major 8 breaks are all on the left side. Physical Therapy came this evening and assisted Michael in sitting up and standing with a walker, the longest 3 minutes of his life!! I was so proud of him, he got really crabby & feisty after that, but he pushed thru the incredible pain & did it, standing did cause alot more blood & fluid to drain thru his tube from his left lung, but that's OK, he needs to start moving. PLEASE continue prayer for his recovery, from any further internal bleeding, protection from pneumonia, and other infections and please pray for our kids, they are all hurting & scared. Specifically pray Michael can walk his daughter down the aisle as planned on April 18th in Temecula. My cell is 949-246-8401 EVERYONE we know & don't know is welcome to call, text, send silly pictures, scripture whatever & I'll pass it on to Michael. Michael has a band on each arm that reads Galatians 2:20, and shares it with each nurse, doctor whoever that asks, his faith & love for Jesus is so strong, he encourages me everyday and I'm so proud he's my husband! Thank you for your prayers & concern, it really is a miracle he's still here with us!! God is so incredibly good!!! Love, Nicol

Mike was in a motorcycle accident at Dove Springs on Sat. at 1pm. He is at Loma Linda hospital in ICU and needs our prayers. He has a broken thumb, 2 collapsed lungs, 8 broken ribs, his spleen is torn in 3 places, and 2 broken vertebrae. He has NO paralysis, PRAISE GOD!!! as the broken back is not near his spinal cord. They hope the spleen will heal itself. The major concern today is about internal bleeding. He has tubes in his lungs and a button to control the pain. He has been conscious the whole time, but didn't get any pain medicine until 9pm Sat. night. His church family was at the hospital with him all night. His wife Nicole is asking all of us to Pray right now.

We'll post updates as we get them.

This was posted on the RUTS message board by Kevin a member of RUTS:

I just talked to mike in ICU and he is doing as good as can be expected. He has a partially collapsed lung on one side and a minor issue on the other. He does have 8 broken ribs though which is going to take time to heal. He seems to be in pretty good spirits right now; and we need to keep praying for him and his family.

The good news is, he was able to ride his bike back to the trucks which were about 4-5 miles from where he crashed (desert racers are tough) for his friends to get him loaded up. If you do not know Mike, I will tell you he is an excellent rider (expert) and more importantly a GREAT guy.

Dear ITD Family
Many of you know that we were not at the March ITD because Scott's 24 year old niece came for a visit from Cairo Egypt where she is doing missions work. While she was here, I was able to meet friends of Lindsey's from Cairo that recently moved here. They are Christians who do outreach work to muslims. They had to leave Cairo very suddenly and subsequently their two boys are in need of clothes. If you have any gently used clothes sizes 7 and 12, please let me know.
Thanks so much! See you at the OTD pizza night next weekend!

There will be plenty of activity this trip, something for everyone with (2) organized rides, a trip over to Jawbone for those tasty tritip sandwiches and Jack rabbits. If you will be arriving after dark there will be light sticks on the signs to aid in navigation. Looking forward to a great weekend! See you all there.

Next week is Wagon Wheel off Trona Road. We will be pulling in Thursday late afternoon some time. Riding should be a premium with all the rain we have had. It will most likely be cold, so make sure your propane thanks are FULL!
If you are participating in the Ride Clinic, Saturday, please make sure you mail me your checks ASAP.
If you have kids who will participate in Jackrabbits, please let us know so we can plan for them.
If you can bring some firewood, great!
Looking forward to seeing everyone.
God Bless,

Robert

One of my fork seals on my 2005 Yamaha YZF 250 just blew out and i have fork oil everywhere. Has anyone ever replaced fork seals on your own? Is it easy/hard? Is it worth the hassle? Is it expensive to have a shop do it?

Any help or advice would be welcomed.

Subject: February Ride Special Event

Author:
Robert Murray

Date Posted: 11:33:44 02/01/09 Sun

Hi Everyone,

Our February ride is coming up soon (or not soon enough) and I want to tell you of a couple very important items.

First off, if you have not checked the ITD web site, the ride was changed from Ocotillo to Wagon Wheel. Wagon Wheel off Trona Road is where we were supposed to be in January. I've checked, and the GPS coordinates on the ITD site are "spot on" to where I want to take us.

Secondly, for my main point of interest: Since the very first year of ITD, I've always thought how cool it would be to have a real, "professional" dirt bike rider join us one month and hold a "hands-on" training session for adults or our kids. Finding the right rider was
difficult because I didn't know any professional riders personally. Secondly when I looked into it, they usually charge a pretty penny!

Well my dream is a reality! I am super-pumped (as they say in supercross) to announce that Anna Cody will be joining us Saturday, February 14th at Wagon Wheel. Anna will be holding several, "hands-on" ride clinics at our camp for kids and adults. The cost is only $40 per person (her normal cost is over $100 per person). The clinics will start right after announcements on Saturday.

What makes Anna qualified to do this you ask? Anna Cody is a very accomplished desert racer, with many firsts:

FIRST woman desert racer with "Factory" backing from Kawasaki in 1989.
FIRST all woman team to FINISH the Baja 1000 with her teammate Lillie Sweetland in 1990.
And in 2006 Anna Cody became the FIRST, Solo Female Rider to complete the Baja 1000!

Check her out at: www.codygirlracing.com

Description of ride clinic:

After a brief safety intro, Anna will take the group out into the desert where she will give pointers on improving your skills, learning how to ride in the rocks, how to conquer up/down hills, whoops and desert sand washes. Sessions will be for at least an hour, up to 2
hours (depending on age and riding experience).

I will have groups of 4-6, of similar age and riding ability. The groups will be small so you will definitely learn some new stuff, and be able to ask her questions of "how to's".

DON'T DELAY!!! Slots will be on a first come-first serve basis!!!!!!!

Here's what I need from you.

1. Email me directly that you are interested! For you, OR your children. (Shannon and Chris are doing it, and I believe Makenna
Jensen is too!!)
2. Send me a check for the $40 per person right away!!!
3. Start getting excited
4. Send me a check for the $40 per person

If you have any questions, please email me directly!!!!
I can't wait. It's gonna be a blast!!

In His Service,

Robert S. Murray

I sent an email to the BLM about the closure of Johnson Valley. According to the Barstow BLM field office:

"there are certain areas the Marine Corp will be taking over for Military use, when it is going to happen we are not sure as of yet".

But it looks like there will still be an OHV park.

Another deadline in the save Johnson Valley (JV) effort is about to pass.

January 31 is the deadline for the Marine Corps to receive comments/suggestions on what topics they need to address in their environmental impact statement on the propose expansion of their 29 Palms base into JV (this is completely separate process from the BLM comment process in December).

Take the time now to send in comments - you won't get a second chance! The Randsburg area was packed at New Years - imagine how it would have been if everyone at JV was at Randsburg instead.

It is easy to comment - you can do it by mail, e-mail or telephone:
Mail:
Mr. Joe Ross, Project Manager
MAGTFTC/MCAGCC,
Bldg 1554, Box 788104
Twentynine Palms, CA 92278-8104;
E-mail:
SMBPLMSWEBPAO@usmc.mil
Voice mail:
760-830-3764

A sample letter with suggested study topics is at www.savejv.com and more suggested topics are at http://pfjv.org/PR5.htm. Both these have very long lists of topics - I just selected three or four that had the most meaning for me to put in my letter.
An on-line comment form that you can fill-in, print and mail is at http://pfjv.org/Mcom.pdf

Subject: California Off-Road Vehicle Association Action Alert

Author:
Jessica O'Connell
[Edit]

Date Posted: 22:57:09 01/22/09 Thu

Hey guys...Robert forwarded this to me and I thought we might all want to know so we can email our CA Gov and Senator, and Assemblyman:

AAPL supports CORVA in distributing this important Action Alert to save our hard earned Green Sticker money that is so desperately needed for trail work and mitigation efforts. Given California's financial crisis, it may be years before we see these funds replaced, if ever!

Action Alert!!!!

Part of the Governor’s latest budget proposal is a $90M loan from the OHV Trust Fund to help balance the state budget!

Although we understand that the state is in the grip of the worst budget crisis in history, this loan is not a solution to the problem!

Why? The law requires that this loan must be repaid within 2 years, so all this does is delay a real solution to the budget problem.

Similar tactics have been tried in the past. In recent years the state budget was often balanced by borrowing billions from constitutionally protected trust funds reserved for highway construction and repair of local streets and roads. Local governments united to oppose this borrowing gimmick and the governor and legislature agreed to stay away from borrowing from local government trust funds this year. Unfortunately this commitment does not extend to our OHV Trust Fund.

The governor is proposing an urgency bill that would authorize this loan. This money is our green sticker money that comes directly from the increased cost of green stickers from $25 to $50. This funding was supposed to go to law enforcement and other essential public safety services as well as improving the program. The public agreed to this fee increase to better fund the program, not to bail out the state budget.

What can you do?
It is urgent that OHV users get in touch with their state legislators as soon as possible.

Write or fax a letter to YOUR state senator and state assemblymember.

Tell them to stop borrowing to balance the budget.

Tell them the OHV Trust Fund should not be used to balance the budget.

Loans like this are just gimmicks and not a solution to the real problem.

We were willing to raise our fees to be able to keep our program operating, we should not become the scapegoats in this budget battle.

During the last election many legislators signed a promise that they would not use borrowing to balance the budget.
Ask your legislators if they signed a "no borrowing pledge", and ask them if they are going to stand by that promise.

Specific points to make are:
1. Members of the public agreed to a fee increase to support a specific program, but now the revenue generated is being diverted from its intended purpose - a breach of public trust.
2. Borrowing from state funds that must be repaid does not solve the budget problem, it only defers dealing with the problem to a later date when it will be even more difficult to solve.
3. Using a trust fund as a revenue source sets a bad precedent. Trust funds are established up to protect public funds for specific purposes. This could lead to diversion of funds from other trust funds in the future potentially including even entitlement funds.
4. The budget crisis must be resolved through a combination of spending cuts and tax increases, not more borrowing.

FAX or email your letter today!!!

To: all the inthedirt members, we, would like to thank you for your hospitality during our trip in January with you. This was our first trip with inthedirt and due to the fact that we did not have any type of toy hauler, we were the one traveling back and forth to a Hotel located in Ridgecrest. We had three families with us and we all had a very good time, as with any first time visit we did not know what to expect and did not join in as much as we would have liked too, this holding back and fear can and does stop us from making the connection and fellowshipping with other, however we will be going on the next trip and will be looking to rent something so that we can be more linked with the activities for each day the kids have been talking about the trip all the way home and we have been working on the bikes so that we can be ready for the next trip. We would like to thank each and every one of you for your warm welcome

Date Posted: 06:35:36 12/10/08 Wed

As Grant Duncan mentioned in a previous post, the Marine Corp has started the process to possibly expand their 29 Palms base into the neighboring Johnson Valley OHV area. This would close JV to all recreational use. An alternative for the Marine Corp is to expand to the east and south of the base, not west into JV.

The off-road community has the opportunity to speak into this issue. If you ride at Johnson Valley, send in a comment. Even if you are an infrequent user of JV, you should speak up, as you will be impacted – everyone who uses JV now will have to move to another place to ride.

The BLM, who controls JV, is accepting comments, but THE DEADLINE FOR COMMENTS IS DECEMBER 15. Send in your comment now, telling the the BLM how important it is to have continued OHV access to JV. You won't have another chance to do this. Open your word processing program right now and write your letter.

Send your comments to the BLM at:
Mrs. Roxie Trost
Field Manager, Barstow Field Office
2601 Barstow Road
Barstow, CA 92311

Put in the heading of your letter: Re: Notice of withdrawal application and segregation FR Doc. E821397

If you would like some talking points for you comment, see the first page of the CORVA December newsletter: http://www.corva.org/ORIA/2008/ORIA%202008-12.pdf

Help Save Johnson Valley!

Attend A Public Scoping Meeting on Proposed Marine Base Expansion and/or visit pfjv.org

Working together everyone can help save Johnson Valley. However, your participation in the public decision making process is critical. You can help save Johnson Valley by attending one of the three Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base expansion scoping meetings. Just walking through the door of one of the meetings to ask questions and gather information sends a loud and powerful message that the future use of Johnson Valley by the public is important to you!

Meeting Dates

December 3, 2008, 5 p.m to 9 p.m., Twentynine Palms, CA (Twentynine Palms Junior High, Hay’s Gym, 5798 Utah Trail, Twentynine Palms, CA)

December 4, 2008, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Victorville, CA (Hilton Garden Inn Victorville, 12603 Mariposa Road, Victorville, CA)

December 5, 2008, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Ontario, CA (Convention Center, 2000 E. Convention Center Way, Ontario, CA)

The Marine Corps is studying it's needs to meet the Marine Corps Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) sustained, combined arms, live-fire and maneuver training requirements. The scoping meetings are designed to solicit input from stakeholders, the affected public and agencies regarding issues or interests that should be studied or the reasonable alternatives that should be considered for the study moving forward. Each of the three scoping meetings will consist of an informal, open house session with information stations staffed by Marine Corps representatives. Public comment forms will be available and gathered at the information stations, and a stenographer will be available to take oral comments for inclusion in the record.

At this time the Marine Corps is studying five potential base expansion alternatives and a No Action Alternative. These study alternatives include:

Alternatives 1 & 4 – Add 188,000 acres West of the base and 22,000 acres South of the base. These alternatives effectively include expansion in to all of the Johnson Valley OHV-Multiple Use Area. Training movements and live-fire exercises differ between Alternative 1 and 4.

Alternative 2 – Add 122,000 acres West of the base and 22,000 acres South of the base. This alternative includes most of the Johnson Valley OHV-Multiple Use Area.

Alternative 3 – Add 228,000 acres East of the base and 22,000 acres South of the base. This alternative does not include expansion into Johnson Valley.

Alternative 5 – Add 188,000 acres West of the base only (Johnson Valley).

No Action Alternative – Marine Corps will seek no additional lands, MEB exercises would occur on existing base.

Take Action Now – Attend at least one public scoping meeting and encourage your family and friends to do the same, and pass along this information to others you think are interested in Johnson Valley’s future. Visit the Partnership For Johnson Valley at www.pfjv.org for additional information and the latest updates.

We're going to be going out to the "boulders" area, near Charlies Place out at Red Mountain, if anyone would like to join us, the more the merrier! We have 4 trailers headed out Wednesday to save a spot, so we will just want to get a head count as we get closer so we know how much space to save.

This will be our first ride of the season, since our baby boy, Matthew, is due on October 11th.

I wanted to go on the ITD ride that weekend, but Trish voted me down... :)

Hope to see some of you then!

PS - This will be our first child, so I am wondering if 6 weeks old is too young for a PW 50?

Hey i'm not sure how many of you know about this but the Marines at 29 palms want to expand their 932-square-mile base and take all of the Johnson Valley OHV Area into their new expansion.
There has been much controversy over this.
District 37 racing and BRP are putting on a "Fun Ride" in order to help save it.
It is very important for the OHV community that it stays open.

Here are 2 links with more information.

My family is going and i hope that you do also.
Who else thinks they can make this?
