I used to be a fan of Howard. Loved Stuttering John, loved the rest of the wack pack, although from the beginning I was a bit taken back by the shit Howard would impose on his own people.
I began becoming a bit more irritated by his completely egocentric personality when he claimed to be the original source for anything creative or funny in the media. It began iccurring to me that he was neither original nor always particularly funny. And it then occurred to me that, alone, he was nothing but an obscessive-compulsive egomaniac with a strong sadistic streak towards his masochistic "friends".
Still, he had his moments. One of the funniest things I had heard, in the first days I became aware of him, was his Superhero concept called "Fartman". I heard nothing about the details, never knew if he followed up on the idea, but I wrote a screenplay based on the idea and decided to run it past him and see if he liked it. One of the biggest wastes of time in my life...
I wasted a lot of time making toll calls to NY trying to get anyone from his staff on the phone. On about the fourth call, I was given the name of his main agent in NY, told that anything of that nature had to be run past HIM. Ok, about another ten bucks worth of toll calls, and I got the address where to send a copy of the stuff. No reply for a month or so, called back, and they said the entire Fartman thing was dead and gone. Like, the show's people couldn't have said that in the first place?
Then came the day that Stuttering John made the trip to Boston to present a Howard poster to Boston University. I drove to Boston and caught up with John in person, script in hand, and made the mistake of trying to get a reaction from him.
Ever see a professional comic strain to keep a straight face when being confronted with someone else's funny material? Don't get me wrong...if the piece of material was a dog, I'd be the first to admit it; but everyone I ever showed it to was rolling with laughter--UNLESS they were connected with the show.
Took awhile to figure out, but I thought back to the personal appearace Robin Quivers made to autograph books. I told her then that I loved the show, but Howard should stop grinding his friends' faces into the dirt. Of course, Robin was so above that, she didn't even grace it with a denial. She had books to sell.
I can now understand why his wife left him.
It was nice to be the alleged "cutting edge" for awhile on radio. But that knife never was too sharp, and with the internet and cable TV and satellite radio, Stern is now just a bit passe.
My bottom line is that like attracts like. One self-centered egomaniac gathers others like himself around him...until he no longer has need of them, then discards them like yesterdays news.
I used to be a fan, and I even tune in the show once every few months for a few minutes, to see if there's any changes. But I will never again make the mistake of respecting the guy. As far as I'm concerned, Howard's just a professional asshole that had a little too much luck for his own ego to handle.
Fuck him.
