Well Bobby kind of stopped being a "true" Catholic after Jack's death. He became an fatalistic existentialist who still retained a belief in G-d (not unlike myself) which helped him deal with his feelings and put life in perspective. Ethel however retained her beliefs wholly which I believe crippled her ability in a sense to be there for her own children because they needed more than just the concrete physical events but the truth behind them as well. I think Bobby would've given them that if he could have so they might have been better prepared to handle life later on.
