Actually, RFK inspired me in the same way that David inspired you, although I was already in school.

I became interested in the Kennedys on the 40th anniversary of JFK's death while watching American Experience: The Kennedys pt. 2 The Sons.

I was completely floored and in my general fashion couldn't get them out of my mind to save my life. Although not in my general fashion, the fascination lasted. The most intriguing part of the documentary for me was the parts after JFK's death that centered on Robert which is how I became so attached to him.

My interest in David however is a mystery to me at the moment. I am well aware of the closeness he and RFK shared and it intrigues me. That and I'm a writer so I also appreciate that about him. I suppose it's the mystery that surrounds him. To a certain point I can find out about many a Kennedy but his life remains completely buried behind a wall.

Couple that with my ironic preference for privacy despite my not-quite-fanatical interest in the family and I suppose it's the contrast that gets me. I would loathe my own early life being parceled out to the highest bidder but I wrap myself around some of the most intricate details of their lives. I defend Jackie's decision to raise her children apart from everyone else--knowing that I would do the same and plan to to some extent. That he's eluded me--though his greatest want was to be acknowledged and given some attention--seems to pull me toward him.

Strange.
