I think Jack might have done his share of damage, encouraging Ted to be unfaithful. I don't think he took into account Joan's inability to handle it the way Jackie did.

But responsibility does lie with Ted mostly, he didn't /have/ to take his brother's advice or live by his father's example--though to be honest I don't really know that much about Ted's infidelities, I've never had a good in-depth Ted book to look at.

Bobby certainly wasn't like that--though he wasn't completely faithful--he never achieved the sexual heights his brothers did and in some respects looks better in hindsight for it.

I guess it shows in the fact that the other children were so aligned with their father and he was at the wrong end of the table i.e. their mother. I think because he saw how lonely his mother was it helped but in perspective his own actions toward his wife and helped him respect her feelings.

If you remember, Ted was very courteous and wonderful to Joan, but they were never too particularly passionate for the other. He was concerned for her safety yes--any decent husband would be--but he never learned to be sensitive to a woman's feelings and decisions in childhood and perhaps didn't learn at all until much later.
