It is safe bet that Joan did not want her children to control her affairs. There are voluntary methods for empowering your children to manage your financial affairs and your medical decisions than can be employed without involving the courts (designation of personal representatives for financial matters; establishment of power of attorney for medical decisions). If Joan had wanted her children to take over her financial or medical affairs, those procedures would have been invoked. And they could have been invoked privately without involving the courts.
