HERE COMES THE BRIDE [SYDNEY LAWFORD]
BOSTON GLOBE, September 19, 1983

A wedding is a wedding is a wedding.

Then there is a Kennedy wedding, like the one in Centerville on Cape Cod, a few miles from the Kennedy compound at Hyannisport. A Kennedy wedding is a public spectacle.

All brides, surely, are radiant, and Sydney Maleia Kennedy Lawford was more than that Saturday afternoon in a billowy, appliqued lace dress with puff sleeves by French designer Jean-Louis Scherrer, her mother Patricia Kennedy Lawford's favorite couturier.

All grooms, for certain, are nervous, and James Peter McKelvy was just that he appeared at the church door after the 40-minute ceremony, his new bride on one hand, a handkerchief in the other, mopping his sweat-drenched brow and smiling nervously at a throng of onlookers.

But the happy couple, who live in Boston, was just another hopeful pair to the estimated 400 ordinary people who gathered, uninvited, in front of the little white church on a knoll.

The throng had come to see a show starring some of the most familiar faces in the American social, cultural and political repertoire, and they were not disappointed.

Even George Plimpton, a relatively obscure personality in New England and more a literary salon figure than a media star, was recognized as he marched into the pillared Our Lady of Victory church an unfashionable 20 minutes early.

Another literary personage was Norman Mailer, who caused a minor sensation as he pumped up the driveway like a compact car, escorting several women who rather loomed over him.

Designer Oleg Cassini was recognized instantly and seemed very happy to be so. Donald Brooks, another designer, was not so lucky; people kept whispering that he was Oscar de la Renta.

Some other unfamiliar faces got attention, too.

Jet-setter Bettina Graziani, companion to the Aga Khan and intimate of designer Valentino, drew approving gasps from the crowd for her bold chic, as did Laurence Scherrer (wife and partner of Jean-Louis) in a glistening black leather coat.

One woman who was not recognized drew a gasp for her mid-thigh skirt; her companion was brazenly fashionable in a beaded shirtdress that looked as if it might have come straight from a Paris salon.

"Seems like everybody is wearing his own thing," commented onlooker Leonia Houghton of Hyannisport. "There's no set pattern to clothes."

More than the fashions, it was the Kennedys the crowd had come to see, and it signaled popularity ratings with applause as each bevy of Kennedys passed, as if in review, up the driveway and into the church.

Joan Bennett Kennedy, one of the first to arrive, received an affectionate round of applause as her son Ted Kennedy Jr., dressed in a khaki suit and his mop of hair wet - a look for others of the young Kennedys this day – escorted her up the stairs.

They had barely gone by when the multitude stirred like leaves caught suddenly in a gust of wind as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis came into view with her son, John F. Kennedy Jr., by her side.

Mrs. Onassis, in a smart two-piece suit with a white jacket bordered in black and a straight black skirt, was almost ethereal in her graciousness, smiling easily for the crowd and the photographers without really acknowledging their presence.

A truly accomplished center of attention, Mrs. Onassis seemed haughty but nice, coolly tolerating the adulation around her without forsaking a certain common touch.

For a glimpse of a rarely seen Kennedy, people will do surprising things, as when a reception in a building next to the church emptied out to glimpse Mrs. Onassis. The reception was for Mike and Susan Collopy of Methuen and West Barnstable, who were married at Our Lady of Victory earlier in the day.

"I think Joan (Bennett Kennedy) got a bigger hand," said Elsa Baumbach of West Dennis and Larchmont, N.Y., as Mrs. Onassis entered the church. Her evaluation received the the murmuring assent of the men and women near her in the crowd.

More applause greeted Kennedy sisters Jean Smith and Eunice Shriver as they arrived with their husbands, Steve and Sargent. ("Hey, they recognize us," Jean Smith said merrily to her sister.)

Ethel Kennedy arrived, down-to-earth and garrulous as ever despite the day's newspaper headlines about her son, Robert F. Jr.'s arrest in South Dakota on charges of possessing heroin. She was on the arm of another son, Joseph P. 2d, who was with his wife, Sheila. Big applause.

Twelve bridesmaids arrived in blue dresses with white lace tops. Then came Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, uncle of the bride, with the bride's mother, Patricia Lawford in a royal-blue silk dress, and grandmother, Rose Kennedy, in a blue hat and blue coat. Big round of applause, more, it seemed, for Rose Kennedy's determination to walk up the steps and into the church despite the infirmities of age. (Rose Kennedy turned 93 on July 23.)

Then white-haired Peter Lawford and his 27-year-old daughter arrived to a warm reception made warmer by Mr. Lawford's friendly, unpretentious mugging for an appreciative crowd and Sydney Lawford's good-natured toleration of the public clamor.

The private reception at the Kennedy compound after the Roman Catholic service for Sydney and Peter McKelvy marked the first time in many years the waterfront estate has been the setting for a gala family event.

The wedding guests were treated to a sumptuous buffet under two blue-and- white striped tents on the lawns behind the several bungalows and the main house that form the family's summer retreat.

Bostonian guests such as Jordan Marsh executive Lee Slayton and political video producer John Florescu munched on the usual seafood array and sipped champagne - or what ever else their hearts desired.

There was dancing 'til dusk and then a spectacular fireworks display to cap the sunny afternoon and faultless late-summer evening. It might have been Camelot Revisited - if these were not the days of the Republican Restoration.

Timothy Shriver, 26, son of Sargent and Eunice Kennedy Shriver, married 29-year-old attorney Linda Potter in a weekend ceremony that caused considerably less of a media stir than the recent wedding of Shriver's older sister Maria.

The ecumenical wedding Saturday at the Georgetown University campus was a quiet affair, attended by about 400 friends and members of the Kennedy clan.

Those present included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Sen. Edward Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy and her fiance Edwin Schlossberg, columnist Art Buchwald and Vernon Jordan, head of the Urban League.

CBS Morning News anchor Maria Shriver, whose April wedding to actor Arnold Schwarzenegger drew celebrities galore, was matron of honor.

New York Episcopal Bishop Paul Moore conducted one ceremony outside the chapel and a second service inside was conducted by Father Richard Fragomeni, former director of liturgy for the Diocese of Albany.

The reception was held at the McLean, Va., home of the bride's parents.

Potter is a Georgetown graduate with a law degree from Vanderbilt University, and worked for the Washington law firm Latham Watkins & Hills.

Shriver is finishing work on a master's degree at Georgetown University and works with underachieving children from low-income families in the New Haven, Conn., school system.

Paparazzi and curiosity-seekers, usually out in force for a Kennedy clan wedding, were hardly in evidence this weekend as Timothy Shriver, son of Sargent and Eunice Kennedy Shriver, married attorney Linda Potter.

Members of the Kennedy family and about 400 friends attended the ecumenical service Saturday as Shriver, 26, married the 29-year-old Potter at the Georgetown University campus.

THE WASHINGTON POST, JUNE 2, 1986

In a season of glamorous Kennedy-family weddings, Saturday's Georgetown wedding of Timothy Shriver, the 26-year-old son of Sargent and Eunice Shriver, to attorney Linda Potter, 29, came off without the media crush such events usually provoke. Nearly 400 guests were there to see the ecumenical ceremonies that included one conducted outside Georgetown University's Dahlgren Chapel by New York Episcopal Bishop Paul Moore and another inside the chapel by the Rev. Richard Fragomeni, the former director of liturgy for the Diocese of Albany and a doctoral candidate at Catholic University.

Two bagpipers and a drummer played outside the chapel. Following Bishop Moore's ceremony Shriver, escorted by his parents, and Potter, escorted by hers, Robert and Isabel Potter, went into the chapel for the second ceremony. They were followed by the assembled guests and friends. The reception was held at the McLean home of the bride's parents.

The wedding party included 15 bridesmaids and 15 groomsmen. There were four best men: John Kennedy Jr. and Timothy's brothers Robert, Mark and Anthony. (The brothers have all pledged to be each other's best men.) Timothy's sister, "CBS Morning News" coanchor Maria Shriver, whose April wedding in Hyannis Port, Mass., was a media event, was matron of honor. Her new husband, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, was filming on location and wasn't at Saturday's wedding. The wedding brought out Kennedys and friends, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Sen. Edward Kennedy, Pat Lawford, Jean Kennedy Smith and Ethel Kennedy; Caroline Kennedy, who will be marrying Edwin Schlossberg (who was there) later this summer; a number of Timothy's Yale classmates including groomsman Dino Bradlee; columnist Art Buchwald, George and Liz Stevens and Vernon Jordan, former head of the Urban League.

Shriver, who is finishing work on a master's degree at Georgetown, works in the New Haven, Conn., public school system with underachieving children from low-income families. Potter, a Georgetown graduate with a law degree from Vanderbilt University, worked for the Washington law firm of Latham Watkins & Hills.
