May I know what was the cause of Rolanda's death? I am still in shock to know she is gone. She was a big time crush of mine during our high school days (of course, she did not know about it. I was too shy to let her know. I just kept the feeling to myself). God bless her soul. May she rest in peace. What a loss!

My Father and Mother Were True Farolinians

Author:

Date Posted: Thu, May 17 2012

"Farewell dear Nanang... till we meet again. Tatang has gone ahead to prepare a place for you. May the angels welcome you to the heavenly realm. May you rest in peace."

Mr & Mrs Constante and Anastacia Buenavista

My parents settled down in Farola when nothing but sand mixed with charcoal dust covered the landscape. A few oleander bushes (adelfas), scarred sarguelas trees, acacia, bittaog and half-burned caramay trees stood wearily among bolbolding, andadasi and tagumbaw shrubs. The stillness in the air was deafening. Laced with the smell of death, the specter of rampant burning and devastation accented the atmosphere. The great war was over. I was just a little kid then. Standing knee-deep in andadasi in the middle of desolation, all I could ask myself was, "Who could live in a place like this?"

My parents did.

They worked very hard to put back the greenery into its former healthy and verdant shape, planting caimito, lucban, santol Bangkok, manga, pias, chico, chesa, kalamansi, guayavana, salamagi and langka. The atis, digek and guava were planted by the birds. My father loved the river. He was an expert tabucol fisherman. He fished in this beautiful tributary almost every day and my mother worked laboriously sewing dresses for the local clientele. They raised pigs (Australian Berkshire sows) and had a poultry of White Leghorn layers, fryers, and stewing hens for a while. We kids helped too, doing the grunt work of watering the plants, cooking binogbog for the pigs, feeding the layer hens, harvesting eggs and keeping the sanitation up to snuff.

Our family thrived in Farola and Farola thrived with our family in it. It didn't take long for the kids to grow up, sprout wings, muster enough guts to fly to far away places. And fly away they all did. Nanang and Tatang stayed on. Every now and then the kids would go home and visit the old homestead and the folks. On such occasions, Tatang and Nanang would always put on a veritable feast and laureate.

Nanang and Tatang gave that place we call home in Farola Permanence with a capital P. They gave it life, purpose, and stature. They remained - to the end - true Farolinians. Of course they both did their own traveling but they always came back to the same old place from where they started. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so they say. The proof of permanence is never forgetting your own roots.

Now their sojourn has come to an end and like Saint Paul would write about and describe his own journeys, we could say that Nanang and Tatang "have ran the course and have completed the race". But what a joyful, memorable and enjoyable trip they put together for all of us.

They leave behind a treasure trove of cherished memories: of living life itself, of making the best with what you have been given, of faith in God and human persistence, of perseverance and self-sacrifice, of respect for others and self-respect, of generosity and kindness, of laughter and love, of standing your ground and on your principles, of patriotism, valor, family values, of tradition and heritage, and most of all - of always knowing where you came from.

My parents were both Farolinians and Tagudinians. To all the members of our immediate and extended families, to all our relatives, to all our family friends, to all our cacabagyans, cabarangayans, cailians thank you so much for adding joy and meaning to our lives. We gratefully acknowledge your support, kinship, kindness and generosity. Thank you all and may God bless you abundantly all the rest of your lives.

I am just wondering why a lot of parishioners from our Tagudin Parish go to other churches outside Tagudin for weddings, baptism, and other services. Some parishioners usually go to churches in Bangar, Luna, Sudipen and other nearby churches. I’ve recently attended a baptism at this church in Ipet, Sudipen and I thought the whole process went smoothly and fast and I am sure our parish is just as good. Could anyone shed light why this is happening since we have our very own church in Tagudin? Thank you apo.

Tang Lustring of Barangay Quirino passed away in Pangasinan. He will buried in Tagudin according to his relatives. His wife Nang Dalin also passed away a few weeks ago during the holy week.

Tang Lustring was a good cook. A lot of people in Quirino and Magsaysay used to ask for his services and I am sure the people will miss him. The late Tang Lustring was a classmate of my mother, Nelly Dauz Valdez at Tagudin High School. May you and your wife rest in peace Tang Lustring. My sincere condolences to the family.

Subject: Mindoro

Author:

[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: Wed, Apr 18 2012

In the Philippines, the holy week which falls in April or March depending on the year is a time when Filipinos go for vacations. It is the busiest time during the peak season. So being said that, my advice would be to make reservations in advance for your hotels, transportation, etc. if you plan to go for a trip during this time of the year to the more popular destinations in the Philippines. You don’t want to head on your trip only to find out there is no room available for you. I know that happened to some people I know.

This year, I wanted to explore more of the Tagalog regions over the holy week so I thought Mindoro would be a pefect place for my little three day getaway. One good thing about Mindoro is it is only a few hours away from Manila (approximately 3 hours - 2 hours bus or car and an hour for the ferry boat or bangka). In fact, because of its close proximity to Manila, a lot of people from Manila go spend the weekends in Puerto Galera.

Puerto Galera is a lot cheaper than the more commercialized Boracay, and that probably explains why a lot of people go there - a taste of Boracay for a cheaper price. The beaches in Puerto Galera are not as white and not as fine as the beaches in Bora but I think the beaches there are good enough for anybody wanting a good beach for his/her vacation. In fact, the island has some of the better beaches in the Philippines. The crowd at the beaches is more of the family kind though, mostly Filipinos with foreigners here and there. Many of the foreigners that I saw there were males usually with their Filipina girlfriends or wives.

At night, it could be a little noisy at the beach however. That’s because that is when the younger crowd comes in to party. You would see people dancing, drinking at the beach and just having a great time. It is a big contrast to what is happening in the rest of the archipelago during this time of the year . I must admit I had a little too much to drink one night while there. Blame it to the Mindoro Sling hehehe. I’ve heard about this drink and I thought I would at least try it while I was there. FYI for those of you who don’t know, Mindoro Sling is an alcoholic drink which probably was invented in the island of Mindoro where it got its name from. The taste of Mindoro Sling was a little on the sweet side but I thought it was good. It reminds me of Sangria but sweeter. It is usually ordered by the pitcher in Puerto and it cost around 200 to 500 pesos a pitcher depending on the establishment. It is actually fairly easy to make if you have all the ingredients. Just mix Tanduay rhum, sprite, mango or pineapple juice and add a little bit of calamansi and grenadine (from pomegranates) syrup and crushed ice in a blender then add splices of fruits and you have Mindoro Sling.

The easiest way to get to Puerto Galera is by taking the bus and ferry. You take the bus to Batangas port, then from there you would take the ferry to Mindoro. One could also drive all the way to the island of Mindoro through the Ro-Ro system(roll on-roll off) where your car is ferried to the island. Another option is by air. Since the airport is a long waste to Puerto , this is the least practical unless you plan on going around the island. You might have to rent a car or take another bus to get to Puerto Galera from the airport which is in San Jose in the other province of Mindoro (Occidental Mindoro). This could be a good option if you are visiting friends and relatives living somewhere in the island. I believe there are a sizable number of people from Tagudin who migrated to this island including a few relatives of mine. Like Mindanao, this island was considered as one of the islands where people went and seek for greener pastures in the past due to the natural resources that it offered. It is still a good place to live in because of its beauty but like in many other places in the Philippines its natural resources are dwindling unfortunately.

For my trip, though a little more expensive I opted to take the bus and the ferry package which I booked throug Si-Kat Tours. The package includes the round-trip fare for both the bus and the ferry. They operate their own bus and they have connections with the different ferry services operating between Batangas and Mindoro. I could have bought the tickets myself from one of the bus stations in Manila and from the boat services at the port in Batangas but I thought that was more of a hassle for me since I knew it is always a challenge finding my way in Metro Manila plus I didn’t know anything about the port in Batangas. There are a few bus lines going to the Batangas port and their stations are all over the metropolis. I know there is one or two in Pasay around the Taft/Buendia/EDSA area. A word of caution, during the peak season the boat operators tend to overload the boats so it is best to arrange your trips for weekdays instead of weekends since it is less busy on weekdays. Going back to Batangas from Mindoro, the boat where I was on was tipping to one side so to balance the boat they had some of us going to one side. It was a scary feeling but I guess that was a normal occurrence when a boat is overloaded. The crew were not a bit worried for they probably go through that all the time. It is good that the Philippine government now requires the boats to be equipped with life vests. It is also best to sit in the middle of the boat so you will not end up getting wet especially when the sea is choppy. Going to Mindoro was smooth sailing though. It was one of the highlights of my trip.

On Good Friday morning, I head down bright and early from my place in Malate to the Citystate Tower Hotel where my bus to Batangas was parked on A. Mabini Street not far from Robinsons Mall in Ermita. The bus leaves around 8:15 every morning. It is at Citystate Tower Hotel where I also purchased my tickets from Si-Kat. For more information, google Si-kat for their website. I paid around 1400 pesos for the round trip ticket excluding the terminal fee that I had to pay separately. I believe the fee includes the mandatory environmental fee. I thought the fee was a little high at 80 pesos considering they have not done anything significant to improve the port and the environment. Normally you pay the fee when you are at the port but for Si-Kat passengers, fees are collected by the conductor inside the bus. By the way, they also enforce the terminal fee for trips going to Batangas from Mindoro for around ten pesos. The bus trip to the port from Manila was pleasant. The toll highways we took were convenient and fast. My impression basing from what I saw along the highways was this area called Calarbazon is more developed than in other areas in the Philippines. You could see industrialization that is happening in between farms and coconut plantations. Most of the passengers were foreigners but I sat next to a very nice Filipino family whom I had a nice conversation with during the entire duration of the trip. Our boat had three stop overs - the pier in Sabang, the pier in Muelle (pronounced as Mulye) and White Beach. There are actually a few more piers in Puerto Galera. Make sure to get off at your destination otherwise you will end up taking another ride ride via a tricycle or another bangka ride. Sabang is where you see a lot of foreigners and pehaps considered as the red light district in Puerto. Muelle is quiet and there is no beach but there are few places offering scuba diving adventures here. White Beach is the longest white beach in Puerto Galera. There are a lot of beach scattered all over Puerto Galera such as Coco Beach, Talipanan, La Laguna and others but I think there are more things to do at White Beach and even though it is crowded during peak season, the majority of the people who go and spend vacation at White Beach always end up having a great time. The ferry ride was an exhilarating experience. The cool breeze was a big relief from the hot weather and pollution in Metro Manila. It was a treat seeing the beautiful islets and the beaches of Puerto Galera while on board the ferry.

Puerto Galera is a beautiful place but I think the uncontrolled development that is happening around the beaches is ruining the place. Like in many resort and non-resort towns under development in the Philippines, there are no planning and zonings. People just build buildings anywhere without proper drainage, sewerage, etc.. This could be a big threat to the environment in Mindoro especially Puerto Galera if not addressed by the local governments of Mindoro. The good thing is I did not see people squatting yet in the vacant lands. I could be wrong however, and if the local government would allow people to squat in the vacant lands/lots, it would be just a matter of time for sure until we see slums in the area like we see in Manila and other places all over the Philippines . I do hope that that it will never happen to this place. Other than this problem I’ve mentioned, Puerto Galera and the entire island of Mindoro deserve to be called paradise in the heart of the Tagalog region.

Before I close this article, let me mention about accomodation . Perhaps this would help in case you are planning to go to Puerto Galera. Hotel rates during low season in Puerto Galera are much lower than in the high season, sometimes up to three times lower. The low season could be a good time to see the place but a lot of the establishments are close for the low season so it is quieter and there is a lot less to do. During high season (Christmas season and the summer months), it is a good idea to make reservations in advance for your accomodations as I’ve mentioned earlier to ensure there would be rooms for you once you are there at your destinations. You could book a room in any travel agency or the travel websites online such as Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, hotels.com , etc.. I found my hotel which was reasonably priced through agoda.com. I did not encounter any problem with this particular website . From my experience, it is cheaper to do it yourself online rather than going to travel agencies since their prices tend to be more expensive. Though my hotel was further away from the beach and not airconditioned, I was generally happy with where I stayed along the highway. I actually got lucky because I found a room since the whole Puerto was fully booked. The lady with the Batangas accent who greeted me at the front desk was very nice. I think she and her husband own the place. She reminds me of my sister-in-law’s mother from Batangas. You can also just walk around in any of the beaches in Puerto Galera to find a room especially in the low season however finding a room by walking around the place could be a challenge in the high season. For cheaper accomodations, there are people who are offering rooms in their houses. You could also pitch a tent in some of the resorts on the beach. Rates in Puerto during low season are reasonable. With the exception of the bigger cities like Manila, hotel rates in Puerto Galera are comparable to the rates being offered in many other places all over the Philippines.

To sum it up, Mindoro particularly Puerto Galera is a good place to spend a vacation especially during the summer months and it is very accessible from Manila. I hope next time I’ll get to see other places in Northern Luzon such as Subic in Zambales and Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte or even Sagada in the Mt. Province. I’ve heard good things about these places.

Spratley is 110 miles away from Zambales and 450 miles from Beijing. What further right do the Chinese have to claim. You know, when the US Pacific forces occupied Subic, Clark and Sangley Point under a treaty, the Spratlys were untouchable. But when the minority communist and leftist members of Congress (lead by Raul Manglapus, Erap, Sumulong, Diokno, etc.) abrogated the treaty under President Cory, the United States Arm Forces left. Now with our rustbucket ships and 1 Tora-Tora OV-10 plane, everybody is claiming ownership of the Spratleys. Can these leftists legislators fight for us to keep the Spratlys? Or just give it away, anyway the monies that can be made from the Island will be stolen by your thieving government anyway. Cowards and crooks. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) brass were more interested in looking after their own pockets than looking after their own people; because a long line of commanders-in-chief (from Marcos to Arroyo) were busy salting away gold bullions or arranging their “cuts” off billion peso deals instead of properly equipping our military.

Filipinos among ‘least rude’ in the world, says survey

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines is among the least rude countries for foreign tourists, a survey by a leading European travel site showed.
France, meanwhile, is considered the world’s rudest nation followed by Russia and the United Kingdom, according to the poll conducted by Skyscanner.
“Taking 19 percent of the vote, the French have long been known for their abrupt and curt nature, especially when dealing with foreign tourists, which has often been taken as rudeness by visitors,” Skyscanner said.
Russia got 17 percent and 10 percent for UK.
“Russians can be more direct when talking, which may be misconstrued as being rude,” said Tatiana Danilova, Russian market manager for Skyscanner. “However this is more a difference in culture than genuine rudeness.”
Danilova attributed this to the Russian language, which “is not as polite as English…”
“So when Russians translate directly from Russian to English, it can sound rude to an English speaker even if they don’t mean it to,” Danilova. “Russians tend to consider British people extremely polite due to their courteous way of speaking.”
The least rude, meanwhile, are Brazilians followed by the Caribbean islands and the Filipinos.
World’s rudest nationalities:
1. French 19.2%
2. Russian 16.6%
3. British 10.4%
4. German 9.9%
5. Chinese 4.3%
6. American 3.3%
7. Spanish 3.1%
8. Italian 2.3%
9. Polish 2.2%
10. Turkish 2.1%

SEVEN (7) SASAI SCHOLARS GARNERED HIGH ACADEMIC HONORS

The good news from the recently concluded 2011 SAS High School term, 7 SASAI scholars obtained high academic achievements. Freshmen outstanding students are: Stephanie Taay, Mariella Tacho, and Melvie Legaspina. The sophomores are Karen Paula Makil (3nd) and Jonel Leal. And from the Seniors, Arthien Pelingen (Salutatorian), and Neza Camones. The remaining scholars (24 in all) maintained their high scholastic averages as required to be kept on the scholarship program. Their accomplishments are a validation of the effectiveness of the SASAI Scholarship Program which being constantly refined and upgraded. It is an affirmation of the excellent scholarship processing work of the Field Team headed by Albert Bunoan with members, Aleli Mae Villa Ros, Louella Bayan, Michelle Costales, Annie Lazo, Eden Oreiro, Hely Somera, Remy Sagun, Noel Bayan, Fred Somera and Melanie Florentino. Credit also goes to our scholarship benefactors for without them there will be no SASAI scholarship program which would have very dire consequences and terrible tragedies of these brilliant minds that would have been wasted.

We are now accepting and [processing scholarship applicants for school year 2012. As of press time, we have 193 applicants but all could not be accommodated. In fact, we could not even fund our usual yearly 12 new scholars unless we could get some help from generous donors. Please visit our website, www.sasaiinc.org and make your gift for the education of our young Tagudinians.

Here are just some photos courtesy of youtube of the ongoing Northern Luzon expressway project that started during the reign of Pres. Arroyo. I am sure a lot of us including myself who travel back and forth between Manila and the Ilocos are looking forward to the completion of this highway. It would for sure shorten travel time between Manila and Tagudin. Four hours Manila-Tagudin is possible with this expressway. It would also be a safer route for drivers and travelers since you would no longer be sharing the road with tractors, tricycles, jeeps, stray animals, people, etc. Moreover, we would be able to avoid the heavy traffic on certain areas of the whole stretch of MacArthur Highway particularly in Tarlac City, Urdaneta, Carmen in Rosales and other towns.

You will have to pay to use the expressway however but for me, it will be worth paying the toll if it shortens travel time and saves lives.

The expressway commences in Victoria, Tarlac and terminates in Rosario, La Union. I read somewhere that it might be extended to Poro Point in San Fernando, La Union and even beyond. I think that would be the nicest thing it that happens. I am sure people will patronize it. The expressway which will be connected to NLEX is scheduled to open in the next two years.

La Union solon tells fishers: I am with you against blacksand mining

By Handog Malaya Vera-Yamamoto, Prince Edward La Rosa and Gerry Albert Corpuz

MANILA, Philippines—(2ND UPDATE) A Northern Luzon congressman said he will oppose black sand mining in his province as he assured anti-blacksand mining groups of his support to the cause in his capacity as member of the Philippine parliament. Veteran lawmaker and one of the north's political thespians-- La Union Rep. Victor Ortega guaranteed small fishermen affected by blacksand mining in the province that he will oppose mining activities along the coastal shores of Lingayen Gulf

In his February 14 letter delivered to the headquarters of the fisherfolk alliance Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) the former governor now congressman of the first district of La Union, Rep. Ortega his stand against blacksand mining goes back to his time as governor of the province.

Rep. Ortega recalled during his time as La Union governor, he commissioned a study conducted by Dr. Fernando Siringan of the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute. The study blamed magnetite mining as the primary cause of coastal erosion and extreme danger posed by blacksand mining in the province.

The La Union lawmaker said during his stint at governor, the provincial board passed a resolution banning magnetite mining activities across the province. Rep. Ortega said ongoing blacksand mining activities are happening not in his district, but in the second district of the province. However, the lawmaker admitted that there are several applications in his district for magnetite mining, but Rep. Ortega vowed to oppose these applications in his capacity as representative of the first district of La Union.

Pamalakaya national chairperson Fernando Hicap welcomed the position of Rep. Ortega against blacksand mining. He said fisherfolk organizations identified with or influenced by his group will collaborate with the office of Rep. Ortega in the fight against blacksand mining.

“Pamalakaya is ready to work and cooperate with Rep. Ortega in this cause. The lawmaker from the North is assured of our support

According to Timek-La Union, an affiliate of Pamalakaya, offshore and onshore magnetite mining are all under fire from affected sectors and residents due to their devastating impact to livelihood and environment. Timek-LU said there are 15 magnetite mining applications in the onshore and offshore areas of San Juan (2, offshore), Bacnotan (2 offshore), Balaoan (2 offshore), Luna (1 offshore), Bangar (2, 1 offshore, 1 onshore), Pugo (1 onshore), Burgos (1 onshore), Santol (1 onshore) and Sudipen (3 onshore) in La Union province alone.

The group noted in Ilocos Sur, there are 57 blacksand mining applications in Ilocos Sur province, with 4 in Tagudin, 4 in Sta.Cruz, 5 in Sta. Lucia, 4 in Candon City, 4 in Santiago, 4 in San Esteban, 5 in Sta. Maria, 5 in Narvacan, 8 in Santa, 5 in Caoayan, 4 in Sta.Catalina and 4 in Vigan City. Pamalakaya said in Ilocos Norte, 86 applications for magnetite mining in Ilocos Norte province are pending before the Mines and Geosciences Bureau ( MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) which cover the towns of Badoc (6), Pinili (3) Paoay (3), Laoag (3), Currimao (4), Bacarra (3), Pasuquin (13), Burgos (4), Bangui (1), Pagudpud (2), Batac (1), Banna (5), Nueva Era (7), Marcos (6), Solsona (3), Carasi (5), Dingras (5), Vintar (6), Adams (2), Piddig (3) and Dumalneg (1).

“The grandslam blacksand escapade in Region 1 is inviting a near future red carpet massacre of people’s livelihood, the grandslam plunder and catastrophic death of Lingayen Gulf in the hands of magnetite mining syndicates,” the group said. Pamalakaya stressed the Vancouver based Canadian firm Colossal Mining holds 5 individual exploration and mining permits which will cover 80 percent of offshore magnetite mining for iron in the North Western Luzon along Lingayen Gulf encompassing the provinces of La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte, including its offshore activity in Cagayan province.

The group said the exploration and mining permits given to Colossal Mining will allow them to explore at least 15,700 hectares of offshore areas in North Western Luzon; Next to Colossal Mining company is the mining firm Grand Total Exploration and Mining Corporation will explore at least 33,00 hectares in the offshore and onshore areas of Tagudin, Sta.Cruz, Sta Lucia, Candon City, Santiago, Narvacan, Santa, Caoayan, Sta. Catalina, San Vicente, Vigan, Sto.Domingo, Magsingal, San Juan and Cabugao in Ilocos Sur. This is another grand colossal case of plunder and destruction.

It also said the Grand Total firm, the company headed by Randy Singson will conduct magnetite mining explorations on 21, 753 hectares of offshore waters in the towns of Bauang, Caba, Aringay, Agoo and Sto. Tomas in La Union; “These magnetite giants are literally and figuratively moving heaven and earth in search for huge profits at the expense of human lives, the livelihood and the environment. They are removing Lingayen Gulf from the surface of this earth courtesy of large-scale black sand mining,” said Pamalakaya.

Hi everyone, I haven’t updated the music playlist for awhile so to let everyone know that I have not abandoned the music at the heading since I know a number of you listen to the music that I put up there occasionally, here are two oldies cha cha medleys for your listening and dancing pleasure. Sorry for the slack off. I just never get around to updating it.

The music is courtesy of Edgar Laberinto of Barangay Sawat. Edgar works at Seaside park occasionally when there are projects that need to be done there. The workers usually bring their favorite CDs to listen to so the day would go fast for them. When I heard the music being played I thought it would be a perfect music to play here at the mb so here it is.

Sumala tayo ngarud amin apo. Aguma kayo iti cha cha tatta hehehe.

Auntie Vita and Uncle Jojo Tabilin of San Diego, California, here’s a music for both of you. I got a chance to watch you dance at the recent TGCHS Class of 1967 reunion in Santa Cruz, Ilocos Sur and I would say both of you are very good ballroom dancers. You are very enjoyable to watch, very graceful . Of course this is for you too Manang Elena. It was fun dancing with you. You made me dance like a pro hehehe. Padpadakar la dagidiay steps ko ngem no nalaing diay partner, awan iti problema.

I would like to thank TGCHS Class of 1967 for inviting me one again. It was indeed a very enjoyable and memorable night for everyone. It was also an honor to get invited to your group. Thanks guys. More power to all of you.

Enjoy.

Yours truly,
dj

FILIPINA SLAIN IN SINGAPORE BIG LOSS TO ILOCOS FAMILY

TAGUDIN, ILOCOS SUR, MARCH 9, 2012 (INQUIRER) A day before she was found dead in a hotel in Singapore on March 4, Rezzilyn Lodia Vinegas (photo) sent her family P10,000 as downpayment for a motorcycle.

“She called immediately [on March 3] to find out if we were able to have our new motorcycle. She really cared for us,” said Rezzilyn’s brother, Emmanuel.

Rezzilyn and her boyfriend, Bangladesh national Mohammad Sumon Lutfar, were found dead from stab wounds inside the Summer Hotel in Singapore on Sunday night.

Rezzilyn’s mother, Matilde, said on Thursday that the family wanted to see the official police report that could explain the circumstances that led to her daughter’s death.

Matilde said the family was invited to the Department of Foreign Affairs’ regional consular office in San Fernando City, La Union, on Tuesday, where they were informed about her daughter’s death.

“I broke down as soon as we were told about her death,” Matilde said.

She said the family had no premonition about the tragedy, having just spoken to her daughter on Saturday.

Matilde said they had been introduced to Lutfar, and have had telephone conversations with him before.

Rezzilyn had been working as a maid in Singapore for six years.

She left behind three children from a previous relationship. The children have been placed under their father’s custody and were receiving financial support from Rezzilyn, her relatives here said. Leoncio Balbin Jr., Inquirer Northern Luzon

FORMER Armed Forces chief and now Muntinlupa City Rep. Rodolfo Biazon added to the swirling reports of a coup plot against President Benigno Aquino III by saying “the recruitment [of soldiers] started three months ago” on Tuesday.
Biazon, a retired four-star general, a former head of the Marines and an ex-senator, supported Senator Antonio Trillanes IV’s statement on Monday that the plotters were using the “red scare” to recruit troops.
“You ask if there is such an activity. Yes,” Biazon told a reporter who asked him if the reported plot was real.
“I will say that we can ignore this but we should be concerned,” he said.
“I asked the intelligence services of the Armed Forces to monitor this and I think they are.”
Biazon identified the plotters as the “allies of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the Armed Forces who had been charged with various graft cases.”

Every Wife is a "Mistress" for her Husband.
"Miss" for one hour & "Stress" for the rest 23 hours!

There are 2 times when a Man doesn't understand a Woman.
Before Marriage and After Marriage.

My Husband And I Divorced Over Religious Differences.
He Thought He Was God, and I Didn't.

Husband Throwing Darts at His Wife's Photo and Not Even a Single One Hitting the Target...
From Another Room Wife Called The Husband: Honey What Are You Doing...
Husband: "MISSING YOU"...

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY...
Women are like phones:
They like to be held, talked to and touched often.
But push the wrong button and you're disconnected.......

Difference Between Complete & Finish...
People say there is no difference between COMPLETE & FINISH. But there is...
When you marry the right one, you are COMPLETE....
And when you marry the wrong one, you are FINISHED.....
And when the right one catches you with the wrong one, you are ...
COMPLETELY FINISHED!

Romantic...SMS She sends the following message:
My love if you're sleeping, send me your dreams
If you're smiling, send me your smile
If you're crying, send me your tears
I love you
He Replied: I'm in the toilet. What do I send?

There are 3 kinds of men in the world:

Some remain single & make wonders happen,
Some have girlfriends & see wonders happen,
The rest get married & wonder what happened!?

*********

The A B C...

After being married for thirty years a wife asked her husband to describe her.

He looked at her slowly...then said, "You're A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H.... I, J, K."

She asks...... "What does that mean?"

He said, "Adorable, Beautiful, Cute, Delightful, Elegant, Fancy, Gorgeous, Honey.

She smiled happily and said...."Oh, that's so lovely..... What about I, J, K?"

He said, "I'm Just Kidding!"

His eye is still swollen....but it will get better.........

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

In a divorce court a woman requested the judge: "Your honor, I want to divorce my husband."

"But why?" asked the judge. She replied, "Because he is not faithful to me."

The judge asked, "How do you know?" She replied, "My lord, not a single child resembles him."

*********

At the cocktail party, one woman said to another, "Aren't you wearing your wedding ring on the wrong finger?"

The other replied, "Yes I am, I married the wrong man."

A tough-looking group of bikers were riding when they saw a woman about to jump off a bridge, so they stopped.

The leader - this big burly man - gets off his bike and says "what are you doing?"

"I am going to commit suicide", she says.

While he didn't want to appear insensitive, he didn't want to miss an opportunity either, so he asked, "well, before you jump, why don't you give ma a kiss?"

So she does. And it was a long, deep, lingering kiss with a lot of tongue action.

After she's finished, the biker says, "wow! That was the best kiss I've ever had!. That's a real talent you are wasting. You could be famous. Why in the world would you want to commit suicide?"

"My parents don't like me dressing up like a girl."

Authorities suspect that the victim was pushed.

Rocco overtakes other GMA new stars

Published : Monday, February 20, 2012 00:00
Written by : Mario Bautista

ROCCO Nacino will advance taping some episodes of GMA7's “The Good Daughter” with Kylie Padilla since he will be gone for 20 days in March and April to shoot “Lam-ang” on location in Vigan and Tagudin, Ilocos Sur. “May break naman in between,” he says. “After 10 days, I’ll be allowed to return to Manila then balik uli ako sa Ilocos to finish the shoot. I’m excited as I’ve never been to Ilocos.”

What’s he doing to prepare for the role? “First, I did research on Lam-ang to find out more about him. He’s an Ilocano epic folk hero. Our director, Ana Agabin, wants me to be more buff so I’m now working out to add more muscles kasi nakabahag lang ako all throughout the movie. I’m also taking arnis lessons for the fight scenes.”

He was just the 5th placer in Starstruck V, but he has overtaken the careers of his batchmates, including winners Sarah Lahbati and Steven Silva, since he plays no less than the title role in “Lam-ang.” He’s also nominated either as best actor or best new movie actor for his portrayal of a closeted gay dancer in last year’s “Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa.” “I’m sure magkakaroon din ng sarili nilang break ang mga kasabay ko,” he says.

ALLEN IS 'AKTOR NG DEKADA'

DENNIS Evangelista is the line producer of “Lam-ang” for Saridandan Films Inc. of Ilocos Sur Vice Gov. DV Savellano. He stresses that it’s different from the “Lam-ang” project of Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos who’ll first do a graphic novel of the material before their own animated version. “Our version is live action from start to finish,” he adds.

Dennis is also the line producer of such award-winning films as “Dukot” about desaparecidos, “Sigwa” about the First Quarter Storm, “Deadline” about wanton media killings, “Patikul” about the efforts of Mindanao coffee farmers for literacy and the latest is “Migrante (The Filipino Diaspora)” about OFWs starring Jodi Sta. Maria that just finished shooting on location in Israel. All of them are helmed by Joel Lamangan.

Dennis tells us that “Dukot” lead actor Allen Dizon, who won best actor in the 8th Gawad Tanglaw award (from academicians) for his role as an ill-fated activist has just been notified that at the 10th Gawad Tanglaw Awards, he’ll be honored anew as an Aktor ng Dekada, one of the actors honored in the award-giving body’s first decade. “Patikul,” which also stars Allan, also wins as their student’s choice best picture, with Joel Lamangan winning their presidential jury award for excellence in film. Awarding will be held on March 15.

Meantime, “Deadline”, which had SRO screenings in Europe and the Middle East, will be shown exclusively at SM Clark on February 21-22, sponsored by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, Pampanga chapter.

WELCOME ADDITION

ANA Agabin is a welcome addition to our short list of female directors. Daughter of the UP College of Law Dean Pacifico Agabin, she graduated from UP in 1998 majoring in European languages.

She was into theatre acting and after college, she joined a production outfit that produces a women’s show for ANC and makes AVP’s and docus. In 2009, she joined Cinemalaya and directed her first full length film, “24 K,” about the search for missing treasure starring Julio Diaz and Alchris Galura. It won best cinematography and was also nominated for the Golden Orchid Award at the Hawaii International Filmfest.

“Na-trauma ako after that,” she says. “Grabe experience ko sa dami ng problema starting with Julio, who later apologized, at dahil sa budget constraints and time pressure. I rested for a while. I’m Ilocana so I know about the epic of Lam-ang. Before superheroes like Superman, Batman and even Panday, may Lam-ang na ang Ilocos passed on through centuries by oral tradition. I thought it’d be good material for a movie. I met Vice Gov. DV Savellano through a friend and I mentioned the project to him. Gustung-gusto niya so, heto, gagawin ng pelikula.”

How did she choose Rocco for the title role? “Nagpa-audition kami. Many actors came but I won’t mention their names anymore. Sa lahat sa kanila, si Rocco ang sobrang galing. Nagawa niya lahat ng pinagawa ko at swak na swak talaga siya as Lam-ang. We’re now looking for his leading lady na kailangan, brown din like him. Playing his foil is Art Acuna while Alchris Galura will be his best friend who’s be with him in all his adventures.”

North-based lawmakers slam over snub of appeal vs. blacksand mining
Manila : Philippines | Feb 08, 2012 at 8:39 PM PST
By GerryAlbert

By Gerry Albert Corpuz

MANILA, Philippines- The activist fisherfolk alliance Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamaakaya) on Tuesday said it was dismayed with the political snub it received from 12 congressmen in Ilocos Region regarding their complaint against black sand mining operations in Lingayen Gulf that encompasses the provinces of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

"We don't deserve this kind of cold treatment and outright snub from the congressmen of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte provinces. Nobody has the right to snub and take for granted the legitimate inquiry of the small fishermen in the region The letter of appeal against black sand mining was sent to their offices at the House of Representatives on the first week of December last year. It is now February 2012, but we have yet to receive any official response from the 12 congressmen. To the congressmen of Region 1, please break your silence, say something and address the issue of destructive magnetite mining in the region fair and square and in accordance with Ilocano people's interest," said Pamalakaya national chairperson Fernando Hicap in a press statement.

On the first week of December last year, Hicap together with Pamalakaya vice chaireprson Salvador France delivered their latter of appeal to Rep. Rodolfo Farinas Jr (1st district, Ilocos Norte), Rep. Imelda R. Marcos (2nd district, Ilocos Norte), Rep. Ryan Singson (1st district, Ilocos Sur), Rep. Eric Singson Jr (2nd district, Ilocos Sur) Rep. Victor Ortega (1st district, La Union), Rep. Eufranio Eriguel (2nd district, La Union), Rep. Jesus Celeste (1st district, Pangasinan), Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil (2nd district, Pangasinan), Rep. Rachel Arenas (3rd district, Pangasinan) Rep. Gina P. De Venecia (4th district, Pangasinan), Rep. Kimi Cojuangco (5th district, Pangasinan) and Rep. Marlyn Primicias-Agabas (6th district, Pangasinan) in their respective offices in the House of Representatives.

"In behalf of the small fisherfolk in Lingayen Gulf encompassing the provinces of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte, we in Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya), a national federation of small fisherfolk organizations with chapters and allied fishermen associations along Lingayen Gulf appeal to your sense of urgent concern in connection with the gulf wide black sand mining in Region 1", the Pamalalaya letter said.

The Pamalakaya letter reads: "Honorable lawmakers in Ilocos Region, we are appalled with the clear and present danger posed by onshore and offshore mining for magnetite along the entire coastal areas of Lingayen Gulf which is composed of Zambales in Central Luzon and Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte provinces."

In their letter to congressmen, the Pamalakaya leaders said there are 15 magnetite mining applications in the onshore and offshore areas of San Juan (2, offshore), Bacnotan (2 offshore), Balaoan (2 offshore), Luna (1 offshore), Bangar (2, 1 offshore, 1 onshore), Pugo (1 onshore), Burgos (1 onshore), Santol (1 onshore) and Sudipen (3 onshore) in La Union province. In Ilocos Sur, there are 57 blacksand mining applications in Ilocos Sur province, with 4 in Tagudin, 4 in Sta.Cruz, 5 in Sta. Lucia, 4 in Candon City, 4 in Santiago, 4 in San Esteban, 5 in Sta. Maria, 5 in Narvacan, 8 in Santa, 5 in Caoayan, 4 in Sta.Catalina and 4 in Vigan City.

In Ilocos Norte, 86 applications for magnetite mining in Ilocos Norte province are pending before the Mines and Geosciences Bureau ( MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) which cover the towns of Badoc (6), Pinili (3) Paoay (3), Laoag (3), Currimao (4), Bacarra (3), Pasuquin (13), Burgos (4), Bangui (1), Pagudpud (2), Batac (1), Banna (5), Nueva Era (7), Marcos (6), Solsona (3), Carasi (5), Dingras (5), Vintar (6), Adams (2), Piddig (3) and Dumalneg (1).

Hicap and France also said there are fifteen blacksand mining in La Union, 57 in Ilocos Sur and 86 in Ilocos Norte for a grand total of 158 applications for offshore and onshore magnetite mining, therefore this grandslam blacksand escapade in Region 1 is inviting a near future red carpet massacre of people’s livelihood, the grandslam plunder and catastrophic death of Lingayen Gulf in the hands of magnetite mining syndicates. "We learned the Vancouver based Canadian firm Colossal Mining holds 5 individual exploration and mining permits which will cover 80 percent of offshore magnetite mining for iron in the North Western Luzon along Lingayen Gulf encompassing the provinces of La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte, including its offshore activity in Cagayan province," the two leaders added. The exploration and mining permits given to Colossal Mining will allow them to

explore at least 15,700 hectares of offshore areas in North Western Luzon. Next to Colossal Mining company is the mining firm Grand Total Exploration and Mining Corporation will explore at least 33,00 hectares in the offshore and onshore areas of Tagudin, Sta.Cruz, Sta Lucia, Candon City, Santiago, Narvacan, Santa, Caoayan, Sta. Catalina, San Vicente, Vigan, Sto.Domingo, Magsingal, San Juan and Cabugao in Ilocos Sur.

This is another grand colossal case of plunder and destruction. The Grand Total firm, the company headed by Randy Singson will conduct magnetite mining explorations on 21, 753 hectares of offshore waters in the towns of Bauang, Caba, Aringay, Agoo and Sto. Tomas in La Union.

"Honorable congressmen and congresswomen as elected officials of the Philippine Republic, it is your duty as lawmakers of congressional districts covered by Lingayen Gulf from Zambales to Ilocos Sur, the governors of Zambales, Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte to oppose the spread of offshore and onshore mining activities along the coastal areas of Lingayen Gulf and prevent this highly predictable killer of livelihood and environment. It is your sworn duty to prevent a looming across-the gulf plunder and destruction of Lingayen Gulf and protect the livelihood rights of tens of thousands of small fisherfolk families," the Pamalakaya leaders noted.

Hicap and France told the 12 congressmen that these magnetite giants are literally and figuratively moving heaven and earth in search for huge profits at the expense of human lives, the livelihood and the environment. They are removing Lingayen Gulf from the surface of this earth courtesy of large-scale black sand mining.

" We hope the Solid North lawmakers would come to terms and effectively use all the powers in their disposal to stop the Lingayen Gulf wide magnetite mining in the name of people’s livelihood, patrimony rights and for the protection of marine and coastal environment," they said in their letter last year.

Retrieval operation on trapped two treasure hunters in Ilocos Sur

By Freddie G. Lazaro
Thursday 16th of February 2012

CAMP PRESIDENT QUIRINO, Ilocos Sur, Feb. 16 (PIA) -- The retrieval operation has resumed today for two treasure hunters trapped in a tunnel last Tuesday in Barangay Lacong, Tagudin, Ilocos Sur.

The victims were trapped in the vertical tunnel with an estimated depth of 50 feet last Tuesday morning. It was reported that the victims were on a treasure hunt in a lot near the piggery farm of Tagudin town’s Vice Mayor Rogelio Lorenzana.

Retrieval operations were suspended last Wednesday evening following the advice of Region 1’s Mines Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Team leader John Yson due to the unstable soil condition of the site, said Ilocos Sur police director Sr. Supt. Noel B. Amoyen

The victims were identified Gereto Leal, 41, a resident of Barangay Lacong, Tagudin, Ilocos Sur; and Eleazar Balleran, a native from Subic, Pampanga.

A rescue team from the Lepanto Mines in Mountain Province arrived this morning, said Amoyen.

After the incident, the police and the local government unit of Tagudin activated the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (MDRMMC) headed by Teresa Laranang for the immediate retrieval operation of the victims’ bodies.

Meanwhile, the MGB Region 1 and the police operatives are now conducting follow – up investigation of the incident.

Amoyen ordered all policemen in the province to closely monitor treasure hunting activities in their assigned areas.

He also advised the public not to venture in any treasure hunting activity without a permit. He added that this is a risky activity and may pose harm to the environment. (ANL/FGL-PIA 1 Ilocos Sur)

SB member commits suicide in Ilocos Sur

A SANGGUNIANG Bayan (SB) member committed suicide by shooting himself the other night inside his friend’s house in Bgy. Bimmanga, Tagudin, Ilocos Sur.

The victim was identified as Rodrigo Lorena, SB member of Tagudin town.

Reports reaching Camp Crame showed that the victim’s body was discovered around 10:20 a.m. by his friend Danilo Lanuza. Investigation revealed the victim borrowed Lanuza’s caliber .45 pistol that the latter was selling.

Lanuza claimed he immediately left upon handing the pistol to Lorena to attend to some house chores but after a few minutes heard a gunshot so he hurriedly went back and saw his friend already lying on the floor and bleeding.

Lanuza rushed the victim to the nearest hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival due to a gunshot wound in the head.

Authorities have yet to finish their investigation to determine if there was a foul play or not.

It's been a while since I have checked-in. But one of the things I noticed is I don't see Chris Lapitan's postings anymore. She normally posts high profile political participations including famous photos. And may I ask about Tagudin officials...I have not heard nor been reading about them, as well. In the past, at this time of the year, normally I receive solicitations either for the Miss Barangay, Miss Tagudin or Tagudin Idol....what's happening kababayan?????

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - Former President Joseph Estrada on Friday said Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo can be temporarily held under arrest at a public hospital, instead of a police detention center. Paano convicted plunderer and pardon right away.
GMA's 'many sins'
Estrada said public sentiment is against Arroyo because of her performance as chief executive.
"Maraming napahirapan eh. Lahat ng ahensya ng ating pamahalaan nacorrupt eh," he said.
"Kinorrupt ang PCSO [Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office], kinorrupt ang PAGCOR [Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.], kinorrupt ang pulis, kinorrupt ang MILITARY, kinorrupt ang Department of Agriculture ... iyung fertilizer fund, kinorrupt ang Department of Finance, kinorrupt ang DOTC [Department of Transportation and Communication] ... iyung ZTE, lahat na ng ahensiya ng gobyerno kinorrupt, tapos napakaraming extra-judicial killings. Maraming kasalanan," said Estrada.

Is there anybody that you can show me that are exempted to corruption in our Country the Philippines, if we can't trust our politicians, our military, our religious leaders, our judicial system, our garbage collectors, who can we trust? Is it a surprise then, that our poor country is indeed poor? Is the Filipino people corrupt and dishonest by nature? Or are we just victims of the Spaniards, the Americans, the Chinese, etc. cultural influence? Is it a surprise then that literally millions of Filipinos are leaving the country to work elsewhere? Professionals working as USN table navigator, housekeepers, pots and pans dish washers, domestics care giver, waiters, laborers, "entertainers" Ladies of the night. Sad. Sad. And I am one of them but not too long. I survived.

RUMIING LATTA DAGITI LAGIP

Iti idadateng dagiti naulimek a sardam
In-inut a sumangbay sam-it dagiti pagteng
Iti panagasinggalot dagiti riknata
Idi sakbay a limmuaska iti ganggannaeet a daga.

Diak marukod ti ragsak a nagbuliganta
Pannakaiburay pateg dagidi lailo a sinisipta.

Kasla naubon a kuentas a naiyukkor kadata,
Iti naimeng a silid inikutanta ti palimed
Nagtugmok rumrumkuas di mateppelan a rikna

Malagipmo kadi no agiddaka a maymaysa?
Napanta idi iti maysa a ‘mall’…
Nagpagatangka jogging pants ken maysa a short

Uray nalawa a taaw ti nagbaetanta, silalagipka,

Just want to share some photos taken at my lolo Momong’s wake and funeral on the 28th to the 29th of December 2011. I don’t have a facebook account so I thought I would post them here at this forum since I also consider him as a Tagudinian. Though his roots are from Narvacan, he went to school in Tagudin. This is for anyone out there who knows him especially the folks in Tagudin and for my relatives on my mother’s side who come and visit this site. Though it was a sad occasion for all of us, it also gave me a chance to meet for the first time and see relatives that I have not seen for a long time. To my dear relatives, hopefully when we get to see each other again, it would be in a happier occasion. Once again, on behalf of my mother Nelly Valdez , our deep condolences to the entire family especially to lola Susan. You will always be in our thoughts and prayers. With much love ..... lv

LAS VEGAS - Unbeaten US star Floyd Mayweather issued a challenge to boxing rival Manny Pacquiao on Tuesday, daring the Filipino icon to "Step up Punk" in a posting on Twitter. Mayweather hopes to entice Pacquiao into a May 5 bout in Las Vegas, a mega-fight showdown between the world's top pound-for-pound fighters, one that boxing fans have wanted to see for years.

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino boxing icon Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao is stepping up to Floyd Mayweather Jnr's challenge, saying he is willing to fight the undefeated American boxer at the end of May. "If we do it on May 5, we would be limited pretty much to the MGM Grand, and we would probably do a gate of $20 million, a record gate. If we did it in this new temporary arena for 45,000 people, we would do a gate of around $60 million. The difference is a minimum of $40 million. It's an extra $20 million for each fighter... That's still a lot of money," Arum said.
