The beleaguered 62-year-old Philippine President went on self-quarantine last week in a hospital in metropolitan Manila’s Las Pinas City. But information slipped out to the media that Arroyo actually had her leaking breast implants repaired during her confinement. We wish you well Mrs. President. So the boobs are fake.

Subject: The comeback of the Philippine National Railways (PNR)

Here is good news from the Philippines for a change. This is the kind of news that we should be getting more often.

For the expats out there who are planning to move back to PI or the expats who have bought real estate properties in the southern part of Metro Manila particularly Alabang and its vicinities and to all our kababayans, this is a good news for you for it is easier now to commute from the southern part to the center of the metropolis with this new rehabilitated PNR commuter line (Alabang-Tutuban) complete with air conditioned coaches and rehabilitated stations.

Congratulations to PNR and to the present administration for their hard works in bringing back the railway system in the Philippines. Hopefully we would be able to see the extension lines to the provinces in the the future and perhaps to have a world class system comparable to the railways system in the other countries. I believe the construction and the rehabilitation of provincial lines (north and south) are ongoing.

This is historic and nostalgic moment for the country. I still do remember taking the train with my family from San Fernando, La Union to Tutuban in Manila when I was a little kid. It was a lot of fun and more convenient than the buses at that time which didn't have air-conditioning and comfortable seats. There were more legrooms to move around in the trains for sure. We had to take the bus from Tagudin to connect to the train station in San Fernando but it was worth the time and effort.

I do hope that railway line will eventually make it to San Fernando, La Union as it did in the past or even extended all the way to Laoag or at least to the Spanish colonial city of Vigan. It would be nice if the line is extended to Vigan since Vigan and PNR are synonymous with the Spanish colonial time. They were both created during that era. This will surely bring tourists such as backpackers, excursionists, and other travelers to the Ilocos. Of course funding and corruption will always be a problem for a project in this magnitude but if there is a strong political will, a clamor for the people and investors to have a longer rail line, and if we all work together, it can be done. So how about it PNR? Extend the rail line to Vigan?

I am also certain that people would ride the train so long as they will build the rail lines. The railway is a good investment that could generate a lot of income for our country and people.

Mabuhay and good luck to the new rehabilitated PNR. I just hope that they will maintain it and people will take good care of it.

PGMA, De Castro in PNR inaugural run

Motorists, pedestrians and even shanty dwellers alongside the tracks were wide eyed today as a spankingly new commuter train chugged along the entire stretch from Tutuban in Manila to Buendia in Makati, not knowing that two of the country’s most important people—President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Vice President Noli de Castro – were aboard.
The event was the inauguration of the Philippine National Railways’ new trains, actually long overdue but which bore fruition under the rehabilitation efforts of the Arroyo administration.
Before boarding, the President and Vice President listened delightfully at the power point presentation of PNR Chairman Michael Defensor on the drastic transformation of the railways, for so long a major mode of transportation between Manila and Bicol. They then unveiled the new PNR logo, which will replace the 1938 vintage logo.
The PNR commuter train will start commercial run tomorrow (Wednesday, July 15) from Tutuban to Buendia in Makati passing through Espana, Sampaloc, Sta. Mesa, Paco, Sta. Ana and San Andres.
For P16, a commuter can now expect a traffic-free journey from Tutuban and reach Buendia in less than 30 minutes.
Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza said the PNR will start commercial operations by tomorrow even if the ticketing system has not been finished. “We might use the traditional method of payment, by tokens,” Mendoza said.
By September this year, the route will be extended to Alabang and eventually to the Bicol region, Defensor said.
Mendoza said the DOTC is now finalizing a uniform ticketing system for the PNR, Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Line 3 and Light Rail Transit (LRT) 1 and 2.
Defensor said the Phase 1 of the PNR rehabilitation project entailed renovating the PNR Building in Tutuban, rehabilitating the trucks, trains and stations and clearing the railroad tracks of squatter shanties (which took very long to undertake). Phase 1 was funded by an official development assistance (ODA) loan from the Korean Export Import Bank, he added.
The second phase, or the North Rail, has been approved by the board of the National Economic and Development Authority. Within 60 days, Mendoza said, the north rail will be started.
Mendoza said the entire stretch of the rail system will be fenced off to protect both the tracks and the riders/commuters.
“We will also install the necessary security measures—including CCTV (close circuit TV cameras) and put in security guards to protect commuters,” Mendoza said. (PND)

07/07/09 Tuesday
The world watched the greatest entertainer of all times say goodbye to the world - MICHAEL JACKSON. From the memorial service attendance and media coverage, it was clear to infer he is the biggest star that has ever walked the face of the planet. If there is a world unity victory getter, it is music, and Michael indeed brought that kind of music. Say whatever you want about him, BUT CERTAIN AS THE SUN IS ALWAYS SHINING BIGHTLY ABOVE A PITCH-BLACK NIGHT, Michael brought the world together, yes, together with his music. (He had a very sad and thorny childhood, a situation that EXPLAINS why his heart was soft with children; and this unusual, almost bizarre behavior made him vulnerable to his heartless critics. Michael wouldn't hurt a child! Having undergone a harrowing childhood experience much worse than his experience, I can identify with Michael's behavior that has been the grilling subject for all his self-righteous critics.

Yes, he was flawed, like all of us! But how else could he endure all those incessant merciless persecutions of his predators and still be the world's top performer? He was superman along that line! What with all the child-welfare projects/programs he magnanimously supported the world over.He wanted to replicate before his eyes what he terribly missed as a child. He modeled it through his children.

Had I been the President needing a "Nobel Peace Prize Winner" diplomat, I would have plucked him from his throne as pop king and appointed him for this key office. One song, just one song from him would have done the job. He could just have given concert after concert all over the world and sang just one finale song in each concert- the closing song of his memorial service “We are the World”.
His songs not only made a difference; his songs brought billions and billions of money not only to people and nations associated with him business wise but also to the United States of America, that collected taxes and attracted revenues ranging from concerts to records to related products. HE ABSOLUTELY DESERVED THE FUNERAL ATTENTION ACCORDED HIM TODAY.

I must insist that companies collecting millions and millions of revenue from this event as well as from business endeavors centered on Michael must foot the bill for the occasion. Sale of anything related to Michael must be taxed even before leaving the country and more, there must be a way for the federal government to monitor all transactions. I predict, in a year, all products directly related to him will generate billions and billions of revenue. This will eventually taper down across the years, but he will live forever.

MICHAEL, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! GOD PUT YOU HERE FOR HUMONGUS REASONS:
• To mellow life for us with your music
• To ease the pains and sufferings of the millions you helped throughout this cosmos
• To model true earthly life- joy and meaning in life solidly anchor on pain and suffering
• To become the man whose life has become a manifestation that money is not the end-all; love and care are
• To give us the soul-searching insight into the things that matter, unity and brotherhood, looking out for one another and securing peace and harmony
• To provide through your death emotional diversion from the lingering and consuming frustrations of Americans about their national woes (A more powerful emotion of loss is superimposed on the citizens’ frustrations about how politicians are mismanaging the government; hence, diverting their energies instead to mourning his death.)
• To hammer in the message that nobody, not even the biggest superstar like you, is super human, and that superstars are more flawed than the average person
• To be one mighty rescuer - open channels leading to lucrative Michael-associated businesses that will generate much needed employment and revenue for America

MICHAEL, GOD SAT YOU CLOSE TO HIM ASAP…”Enough is enough,” God said. MAY YOU REST IN PEACE. PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR AMERICA THAT YOU LOVED SO MUCH. ASK GOD TO KEEP HER CLOSEST TO HIS HEART.

I would like to remind everyone that religious messages (any religion) such as preaching, passages from the bible, discussions about your religion or other people's religions, etc. are not permitted here at the MB. Some religious postings can be ok such as a one sentence obituary message, holiday greetings, etc. that are religious in nature, and maybe short religious messages that are not overbearing (I cannot promise you though that they will be posted all the time here).

I've decided not to have religion as one of the topics for discussion here at the MB because we had a lot of problems regarding this topic in the past. Religion is a very sensitive topic and it is a very personal matter to a lot of people. For the record, I am not against anybody's religion.

This is just a reminder folks so you wouldn’t be wasting your time writing those messages.

Thank you.

Chavit declares bid to reclaim Ilocos gubernatorial post
By Charlie Lagasca Updated July 07, 2009 12:00 AM

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – The Ilocandia’s acknowledged political kingpin may soon be back to regain his throne.

With elections still about 10 months to go, the Ilocos Sur’s seat of power may just be awaiting the return of its long-time occupant.

This, as the colorful Luis â€Chavit’ Singson declared his bid to reclaim the gubernatorial post of the province, which he held for more than two decades, during the inauguration of the 7.3-hectare Rizal shrine in Casat village here Saturday.

This early, political observers concede the governorship of Ilocos Sur, formerly known before Martial Law as the “Wild, Wild East,” to Singson who even now has no serious political rivals.

As everybody in the know about Ilocos Sur politics is aware of, the announcement by Singson, still the acknowledged political kingpin of that Ilocano province, of his return bid would cause Gov. Deogracias Victor Savellano and Chavit’s brother, Vice Gov. Jeremias Singson, to revert to seeking the vice governorship and membership in the provincial board.

While confirming his bid to regain the governorship, Singson, however, cautioned the Arroyo administration against postponing next year’s polls to prevent what he said would be “a backlash.”

“I confirm that I am planning to seek my old post as Ilocos Sur governor again. But regardless of whether I am running or not, the elections (should) push through as scheduled,” said Singson, who was in town with Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and other guests during the inauguration of the Rizal shrine which was the brainchild of Jordanian-born philanthropist Mahmoud Asfour.

Singson, now deputy National Security adviser, hinted that he was willing to draw the line against the administration if elections are cancelled next year, stressing that this may possibly result in chaos or even lead to President Arroyo’s ouster.

Chavit’s spilling the beans on former President Joseph Estrada’s involvement in the so-called jueteng-gate scandal had led to his fall from office in 2001.

“There will be chaos (if elections are not held). Let’s have elections first and then talk about Charter change later,” Singson said.

Wake up my dear fellow Filipinos. It is now time for change stop corruption from the top down to the bottom. I am no longer proud of my primary citizenship to be called a Filipino because of our leaders running the most corrupt head of a country in Asia today. Who do you think are stupid enough who will try to lend their money to the losing business? Without good President, Governor, Mayor or manager and good collateral, they will not even think of lending us a cent. This was a proven facts and experience on my part. The new President can not balance the budget, there goes the spiraling economy. No money to spend to pay teachers, soldiers, the poor (public aid), road and bridges etc. etc. We are living in debt after Marcos left. I hope and pray that the next President doesn't do something stupid like putting our country into more corrupt-embarrassment! If they do, I know a lot of Filipinos will not only be ashamed of our citizenship but also change citizenship, if it is possible. Maybe other Countries would rather deal with dictators and corrupt leaders as it is cheaper to (lagay is my guy) "buy" them or do business with them.

The burden of protector does not solely lie on the uniformed men or women, or the intelligence people; it lies in each of us citizens.

Let us honor the memory of those who have died securing peace and freedom for us by living the values and ideals on which this nation has been built by the FOUNDING FATHERS.

Now is the time to give tribute to the living men and women of service and all those who center their lives in this goal-defending peace and freedom- by joining them wholeheartedly in this mission. "Strength is built on numbers."

The big question now is, "As an immigrant welcomed and embraced by this great family of a nation as her own son or daughter, what else can I share to make a difference in this mission as defender of peace and freedom?

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY EVERYONE!!!

Coffee 'may reverse Alzheimer's'

A possible treatment for dementia?

Drinking five cups of coffee a day could reverse memory problems seen in Alzheimer's disease, US scientists say. The Florida research, carried out on mice, also suggested caffeine hampered the production of the protein plaques which are the hallmark of the disease. Previous research has also suggested a protective effect from caffeine. But British experts said the Journal of Alzheimer's disease study did not mean that dementia patients should start using caffeine supplements.

First the researchers used behavioural tests to confirm the mice were exhibiting signs of memory impairment when they were aged 18 to 19 months, the equivalent to humans being about 70. Then they gave half the mice caffeine in their drinking water. The rest were given plain water. The mice were given the equivalent of five 8 oz (227 grams) cups of coffee a day - about 500 milligrams of caffeine.

The researchers say this is the same as is found in two cups of "specialty" coffees such as lattes or cappuccinos from coffee shops, 14 cups of tea, or 20 soft drinks.
When the mice were tested again after two months those that were given the caffeine performed much better on tests measuring their memory and thinking skills and performed as well as mice of the same age without dementia. Those drinking plain water continued to do poorly on the tests. In addition, the brains of the mice given caffeine showed nearly a 50% reduction in levels of the beta amyloid protein, which forms destructive clumps in the brains of dementia patients. Further tests suggested caffeine affects the production of both the enzymes needed to produce beta amyloid.

The researchers also suggest that caffeine suppresses inflammatory changes in the brain that lead to an overabundance of the protein. Earlier research by the same team had shown younger mice, who had also been bred to develop Alzheimer's but who were given caffeine in their early adulthood, were protected against the onset of memory problems.

'Safe drug'
Dr Gary Arendash, who led the latest study, told the BBC: "The results are particularly exciting in that a reversal of pre-existing memory impairment is more difficult to achieve. "They provide evidence that caffeine could be a viable 'treatment' for established Alzheimer's disease and not simply a protective strategy. "That's important because caffeine is a safe drug for most people, it easily enters the brain, and it appears to directly affect the disease process." The team now hopes to begin human trials of caffeine to see if the mouse findings are replicated in people. They do not know if a lower amount of caffeine would be as effective, but said most people could safely consume the 500 milligrams per day.

However they said people with high blood pressure, and pregnant women, should limit their daily caffeine intake. Rebecca Wood, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, said: "In this study on mice with symptoms of Alzheimer's, researchers found that caffeine boosted their memory. We need to do more research to find out whether this effect will be seen in people. "It is too early to say whether drinking coffee or taking caffeine supplements will help people with Alzheimer's.

Greetings, my fellow Tagudin High School alumni! Are you ready for another Big Event?

Most probably, you may have already been informed by our fellow alumni or may have heard it through the grapevine of another Grand Reunion. On behalf of the Tagudin High School Alumni Association International, I would like to confirm that, yes, we are going to hold another Grand Reunion, but this time in Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. We have been coordinating with the Philippine Chapter for this planned event. In May 2009, I met with Rosita Lucero Pascua, TNHS Principal and President of the Philippine Chapter, local officers and other alumni and unanimously decided that the Grand Reunion be held on January 7, 8 and 9 of 2011. The golden jubilarians of Class 1961, led by Romana Dauz Sappari and Angelita Lazaga Montes have organized a Core Team to coordinate with the officers and members of the Philippine Chapter in the planning and preparation for this Big Event.

Definitely, without your participation and support, this Big Event will not be a success. The Tagudin High School Alumni Association International is, therefore, requesting all alumni to join and participate in the celebration of what will be written down in the history of our beloved Alma Mater as the first Tagudin High School International Grand Reunion in Tagudin. We did it once in Las Vegas, let's do it again in Tagudin! So, start planning your vacation and join everyone in the celebration!

The World's Highest-Paid Athletes

Eight months on the shelf after knee surgery put a severe dent in his prize money, and killed his overseas appearance fees. One of his main sponsors walked away a year before their agreement was set to expire.
Yet Tiger Woods remains sports' highest earner with an annual income two and a half times larger than his closest competitor. The world's top golfer made $110 million during the past 12 months and is the best paid sportsman for the eighth straight year.

Woods' knee injury caused his prize money to drop to $5 million from $25 million, but his overall earnings only fell $5 million thanks to an expansion of Woods' non-playing financial empire.

PepsiCo launched Gatorade Tiger last year in March with claims that it "helps focus your mind and your body." Woods receives a cut of sales for the four flavors sold under his name. When General Motors' problems caused Buick to terminate its $8 million a year deal with Woods one year early, the Woods camp moved quickly to sign a deal with AT&T to put the phone company's brand on his golf bag in Buick's place.

Nike is by far Woods' biggest benefactor with an annual payday of more than $30 million for the golfer. Woods profits from the success of the company's golf division, and last year sales for Nike Golf hit a record $725 million. Woods' most lucrative new endeavor is his golf course design business. Last year he announced plans for a third course to be built in Mexico. His other courses in Dubai and North Carolina are currently under construction.

Our list of the highest-paid athletes looks at earnings derived from salaries, bonuses, prize money, endorsements and licensing income between June 2008 and June 2009 and does not deduct for taxes or agents' fees. Overall, the top 20 earned $789 million, down 1% from last year. The cutoff to make the list was $30 million.

Drop-offs from last year include boxer Floyd Mayweather (has not fought since December 2007), NFL players Ben Roethlisberger and Dwight Freeney (both made the 2008 list after inking contracts with big signing bonuses) and Formula One driver Fernando Alonso (just missed the cut).

The highest-ranking of the four newcomers to the list is boxer Manny Pacquiao who earned $40 million over the last year, tied for the sixth most. Pacquiao cemented his claim as the world's best pound-for-pound fighter with convincing knockouts of Oscar De La Hoya in December and Ricky Hatton in May. The two blockbuster fights garnered more than 2 million pay-per-view buys in the U.S. and earned Pac-Man $30 million combined.

Pacquiao's massive popularity in his native Philippines is why companies like Nike and San Miguel beer have signed him to endorse their products. Pacquiao intends to use that popularity to run for political office when his ring career is over.

Our 20 highest earners have a very international flavor with Pacquiao one of eight non-Americans on the list. Finnish Formula One driver Kimi Raikkonen earned $45 million over the past year, tied for second on our list with hoop legends Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. Right behind that trio is global icon David Beckham who earned $42 million playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy and AC Milan, while schilling for Adidas, Giorgio Armani and Motorola.

Notable omission: the entire NFL, which didn't place anyone in the top 20 despite being the world's richest sports league. The league's salary cap keeps a lid on individual player salaries, and few players outside of Peyton Manning collect big endorsement deals. The top NFL earner during the past 12 months was Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha who made $22 million, mainly as a result of the three-year, $45 million contract he signed in February.
