Subject: Friesian color

We are purchasing a 7yr Friesian that was Gelded a year ago. As a stallion he was eligible for studbook. Apparently this is the first year he has had a winter coat and it is dark brown not black. Is this normal and is it due to lack of testosterone? Is there any remedy such as supplements or specific care requirements now that he is a gelding?
