My horse kept losing more and more mane due to it tangling and other horses grooming him and chewing/breaking it. I started putting it in a single running plait and re-plaiting it when it started to get messy or unravel.
Two years later his mane is still in the single plait and I re-do it about twice a week. His mane is now past his elbows. His pals still groom him but the plait keeps it out of their mouths. I have found no need for mane bags.
