Yeah,
it is common with horses that are young, but friesians seem to have a bit more of a hard time. We had the problem with ours at first, but now she is doing much better. Basically, it is a balance issue, but can be fixed with training. You ask them and then when they start running into the trot, give them a smack with the stick until they canter. Once you have them there, only ask them to canter say once around. Once they learn to pick up the canter, they will develope more strength and balance over time, as you ride the canter more. Try and do it more on the long rail instead of on a circle, which is harder for them to maintain balance.
