Thank you for the support! I really appreciate it!

Good news! (Well, much better news anyway.) I did get a second opinion. Thankfully!! I took Apollo to an equine eye specialist. He used all sorts of high-tech, space age gear. It was very interesting. He spent about 30 minutes with Apollo. Not only did I learn more about Apollo's eye, but I have a good education about the equine eye. Amazing!

Turns out this vet does NOT believe Apollo to have moonblindness. (Good reason to not panic until a second opinion has been made! :)) He said he thinks there was some blunt force trauma. That made me feel bad, like I missed something, but he explained it probably happened in his stall when he hit his eye on the corner of the door or on a feeder or something. He said there is no reason I would have noticed until it got inflamed. Just when I did.

The damage is permanent. We are slowly weaning him off the ointments, and the banamine (one thing at a time). And we'll see how Apollo reacts. It could be quite possible that he will need an eye ointment for the rest of his life, to help his pupil dialate correctly. But, hopefully, best case scenerio, we cure the inflammation and all is well.

His right eye pupil is shaped like a figure 8, like it is pinched in the middle (where the damage occured) so there is a small section that has no sight. But it is so small that the vet told me several times, "This will not cause him to be more spooky."

I will always have to keep a very close eye on it, even if it heals wells this time. He wanted me to be clear on what to look for, so that's why he gave me such a good education.

We're not out of the woods yet, bad things could happen (such as infection!!), but he says that Apollo is healing quickly and thoroughly so we should be okay.

I can't tell you how relieved I am. This has been so emotional for me. Thanks again for your support everyone! (BTW I sometimes think people say things about Friesians because they want to show how 'bad' they are, just jealous I think.)

Guess I better get out and ride!!

Cynthia
