Subject: Swollen Lymph Nodes

Hi all My 4.5 year old Friesian Gelding was just imported from Holland about 2 weeks ago. The pre-vet exam was fine and our boy is absolutely gorgeous. He was just gelded in September and is a lovely mover. I have fallen totally in love. Unfortunately about 5 days in, we noticed a hard lump swelling in his jaw / above the throatlatch area (about the size of a golf ball now, painful for him) so I called a vet. Please note, we are still within the sale/trail period but returning him is really not even a possibility. This horse is a keeper!

The vet did not seem too worried and gave me some Stay Cool cream to put on the area. I thought it could be something like swollen glands when you get a cold. I heard that horses get trailer sickness too and his ride was long, about 12 hours.

I did a little research on the web and now I am so freaked out with all of the possibilities. Could it be strangles? (He has no fever 37.8c today - checking everday, slight runny nose, is doing light work and seems fine but Friesians are hardy and do not show when they are ill). The lump has not opened or drained but this could be from the cream which covered the area not allowing it to breathe. We changed to hot compresses today. It seems to be definintely something with his immune system.

FYI, he is now eating Hypona pellet feed which was changed from his usual feed in Holland. It was recommended here in this area.

My husband said not to go against what the vet prescribed because he is extremely well respected in the area and gives seminars to vets at University. At even the slightest sign of strangles, it is the vet's responsibility (I am originally from the States but live in Europe now and am used to the strict policies here) to inform the authorities and quarantine the barn. I feel like an idiot asking them to test him for everything and not really knowing what the problem is.

Between the actual cost of the horse (worked my butt of for it) and now all of these vet bills, the promised shoeing that was not done, his bad teeth (please note, that horses shipped from Holland usually do not have their teeth done which is pretty pricey) this happy time has become stressful and a bit of a rude awakening. We are to move him to a new barn soon for better training and now cannot due so until this problem is settled as we cannot risk infecting another barn.

I am so worried the vet will wait until it gets worse and then we will have more problems to deal with.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Comments?

Thanks to all.
