I would geld at the earliest in the spring of his first year, so if you are in the northern hemisphere then March/April next year before the flies. Depends on temperament really, we have left some of ours till they are 3, but you need the right facilities and obviously don't turn him out with any girls as they can potentially be fertile from 6 months old onwards, so just keep him with other colts/geldings. If you geld them at around the yearling age they tend to grow an inch or 2 taller than they would as an entire, but they get a crestier neck if left longer.
