Subject: FEED ISSUE

I have a 4 year old friesian gelding. He is baroque build and is under weight. I am currently feeding him 4 pounds of pellets per day along with six flakes of hay. His trainer wants me to switch him over to 7 pounds of sweet feed a day along with hay. I am new to this breed and I cant understand why some people believe sweet and large amounts of it is bad for friesians. What type of grain and the amount is safely recommended for young, working friesians?
