Hi Jennifer:

I agree with the other posters comments. Get another trainer!!! You want to keep your horse's mouth soft and using a harsh(er) bit on a 4 year old is not going to help you in the long run.

Some pointers - I use a regular D ring snaffle, the original bit suggested when I got him at 4.5 years (he is now over 6). We trail ride all over now with and without other horses (read my previous posts how I thought this would never happen).

One word of caution: my boy gets really exuberant and will buck as he goes into a gallop following another horse on the trail. This is not easy to sit if you are a beginner. I would try really long long walks on an out ride and get his back moving.

The last thing I would change is the bit because if he wants to go, he will go no matter what is in his mouth. Trust is key.

My goal is to ride him by next year without a bit on a trail. I am really in awe of the trust displayed between horse and rider.
