Subject: Treatment for Scratches

My Friesian has lovely, thick, long feathers and I have been VERY successful in keeping the dreaded scratches away. I did a lot of research pertaining to the prevention and care of scratches and this is what I have learned: the objective is to keep the feathers and the fetlock/pastern area dry. If you have muddy, wet conditions, you must remove the mud (which holds in moisture)as frequently as possible. If your horse does not currently have scratches, shampoo weekly with Head and Shoulders Shampoo and spray with "Scratches-B-Gone" (sold thru Cheval International, www.chevalinternational.com)as a preventative. If your horse does have a breakout of scratches, shampoo the area with Head and Shoulders Shampoo every 3 days and spray with Lotrimin Antifungal spray (available in the footcare section of any drugstore)every day, making sure to get the spray directly on the infected skin. Rinse the area with water before applying the Lotrimin on the days that you are not shampooing. Gently remove any dried scabs as healing progresses by wetting the scabs and gently massaging away any loose scabs. Repeat this treatment until the scratches are gone. This method has worked for me and my Friesian has only had one very minor scratches breakout which I was able to clear up within 1 week. Prevention is the key! Keep the feathers and most importantly, the skin underneath, as dry as possible!
