I had battled "scratches" in my mare ever since she was 2 years old. I tried everything and nothing seemed to eliminate the problem. The scratches would go away for a while, only to come back again. I keep the back of her pastern shaved, and thanks to a tip from my vet, treat all four once a month with Frontline Spray (Fipronil). The spray is for killing fleas and ticks in puppies and kittens, but off the label, it also kills the heel mites that were causing my mares troubles. I've been using it for three months now, and the scratches are GONE. It's good stuff.
